Muscular excitation and oxygen extraction responses in power-generating and stabilizing muscles during a graded cycling test
Although some studies have shown an agreement between near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and surface electromyography signals during dynamic exercise for a single muscle, research assessing multiple muscles with different roles is lacking. This would improve understanding of the connection between muscle excitation and muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) profiles. Our study evaluated whether muscle excitation aligns with SmO2 during cycling in graded exercise testing. Fifteen cyclists and triathletes (age = 22 ± 6 years, stature = 175 ± 8 cm, training hours = 12 ± 4 hours·week−1) performed a graded exercise test on a cycle ergometer. NIRS and electromyography devices were placed on the preferred sides of the vastus lateralis, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius medialis, and biceps femoris. Results showed that, in general, while average root mean square (RMS) increased, SmO2 decreased (p < 0.05), except in the gastrocnemius medialis, which remained stable. Vastus lateralis and biceps femoris exhibited moderate signal agreement between RMS and SmO2 (CCCLin: vastus lateralis = 0.70; biceps femoris = 0.50), while stabilizing muscles showed weak agreement (gastrocnemius medialis CCCLin = 0.32; tibialis anterior CCCLin = 0.39). In conclusion, power-generating and stabilizing muscles respond oppositely in SmO2 and RMS during progressively increasing intensity exercise until exhaustion
Not just sightseeing but resonating: reframing the trouble with the good life in post-tourism
Ethical reflections on the relationship between tourism and the good life remain underexplored, particularly in the context of post-tourism’s fragmented and accelerated practices. While tourism’s negative impacts often overshadow its potential contributions to the good life, the absence of a clear telos or internal good —in the Aristotelian-MacIntyrean sense— in tourism practice complicates this evaluation. How, then, can tourism practice’s contribution to the good life be assessed? This paper interrogates this issue by comparing two frameworks. Unlike Dean MacCannell’s approach, which argues that the practice of sightseeing embodies the good common to all tourism and its potential social benefits lie in the tourist’s virtuous capacities, this work proposes that Hartmut Rosa’s concept of resonance may offer an alternative foundation for a critique of the good life in tourism. This approach shifts the ethical focus from the tourist to the social and cultural dynamics of acceleration that shape contemporary tourism

Quantitative phase imaging in Hadamard-based active single-pixel microscopy by the motionless transport of intensity equation
In this Letter, a method to achieve quantitative phase imaging (QPI) on Hadamard-based single-pixel microscopy (HSPM) is presented. A motionless implementation of the
transport of intensity equation (TIE) supported by a focustunable lens (FTL) is reported for HSPM. The presented approach enables the use of digital micromirror devices (DMDs) instead of the typically implemented phase-only modulators utilized in QPI single-pixel imaging (SPI). Photobleaching and phototoxicity are minimized under the proposed approach. A minimal light–sample interaction is guaranteed by the DMDs’ achievable frame rates, the structured illumination approach, and the use of high-sensitive photodiodes. The feasibility of this method is validated by imaging a calibrated phase-only USAF test target of different height steps. Additionally, epithelial cheek cells are imaged under low-power conditions, 240 µW, to validate the effectiveness of phase retrieval for biological samples

Giant Band Gap Narrowing under Hydrostatic Pressure in (4FP)2SnI4 Halide Perovskite
One of the most intriguing properties of hybrid halide perovskites is their structural softness. The interplay between organic and inorganic sublattices leads to a multitude of physical phenomena that are not observed in conventional semiconductors such as III–V materials. One among these is the exceptional band gap tunability under hydrostatic pressure. In this context, tin-based perovskites exhibit a more pronounced effect than their lead-based counterparts. Here, we report on one of the largest band gap tunabilities in this material family. The studied material, layered tin-based (4FP)2SnI4 perovskite, exhibits an exceptionally strong pressure sensitivity, with a band gap shift of up to −160 meV/GPa at room temperature. Combined experimental and computational studies reveal that its band gap dependence on pressure remains linear in the 0–5 GPa range, making (4FP)2SnI4 highly attractive for pressure-sensor applications
It is not (white) gold all that glitters: lithium conflicts in de Andean countries
This paper continues to focus on the extractive sector, specifically on transition metals, including lithium, in line with the commitment made in a previous general paper developed in collaboration with Professor Sales Pallarés. Here, after outlining the frame of reference we set out in that paper, I proceed to an instrumental characterisation of lithium in this field, then move on to what constitutes the main object and ultimate reason for these pages: the analysis of conflict situations based on selected cases in Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. The findings of this analysis are of paramount importance, as they shed light on the stark contrast between an idealized view of these minerals—and lithium—as vectors of progress, and what they represent for the environment and the most fragile human communities, along with many other significant problems, having made them a kind of supreme remedy to the enormous challenge of the climate emergency
Vides al vent. Producció d'un curtmetratge documental
Treball Final de Grau en Comunicació Audiovisual. Modalitat A. Codi: CA0932.
Introduction: Butler coined the term ageism in 1969. The WHO defines
ageism as stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination based on age. It is esti mated that the number of people over 60 years old in the world population will double by 2050. Negative perceptions of aging can interfere with health beha viors such as physical activity, which is a fundamental factor for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Methodology: The systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Studies in English or Spanish on self-ageism in people over 50 years old were included. The search was conducted from 2010 to April 2024 (Scopus, PubMed, and PubPsych), resulting in an initial 51 articles. After removing duplicates and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 3 articles were selected. Results: The selected articles show a relationship between physical activity and self-inflicted ageism. Physical activity is associated with fewer negative perceptions of aging, and these negative perceptions are as sociated with less frequent exercise. Interventions can change perceptions of aging and increase the intention to engage in physical activity.
Discussion and Conclusions: Having negative beliefs about one’s own aging process can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Thus, the erroneous belief that the abi lity to engage in physical activity diminishes with age can lead to a sedentary lifestyle, which in turn works against successful aging and good physical and mental health
Introduction: Mental health in elite athletes has gained increasing relevance in recent years.
Although sport provides physical and psychological benefits, high-performance settings
involve extreme demands, pressure, and stress, which can negatively affect mental well-being
despite the athletes’ apparent resilience.
Objectives: To identify the most common mental disorders in elite athletes, the main risk and
protective factors, existing interventions, and to examine differences based on sex, type of sport,
age, and athletic status.
Methods: A literature search was conducted in the PubMed and Scopus databases, selecting
studies that met the predefined eligibility criteria. The most relevant data were presented in a
summary table. Methodological quality was assessed using the AHRQ Methodology
Assessment and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and the certainty of the evidence was evaluated
using the GRADE system.
Results: The sixteen included studies showed a high prevalence of symptoms and mental
disorders in elite athletes, such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, harmful alcohol use,
and sleep disturbances. These disorders were more frequent in women and in athletes from
individual or aesthetic disciplines. They were associated with factors such as injuries,
involuntary retirement, strong athletic identity, professional dissatisfaction, stress, and training
load. Coping strategies and social support acted as protective factors. Additionally, a clear
comorbidity between different disorders was observed.
Conclusions: It was concluded that elite athletes faced stressful situations that favored the
development of mental disorders. A lack of consensus in evaluation was highlighted, which
should be conducted by healthcare professionals. Specific preventive and intervention strategies
are required
