Measuring User Experience in Voice and Multimodal User Interfaces: Development, Validation, and Standardization of a Usability Scale for VUIs and a Context-Aware Usability Scale for Multimodal Interfaces

    No full text
Compendi d'articlesThis doctoral thesis enhances the usability and user experience (UX) of Voice and Multimodal User Interfaces (VUIs) through four core objectives. First, a systematic literature review maps the state of the art in VUI usability and UX, identifying six research themes and future directions. Second, the System Usability Scale (SUS) is evaluated for VUIs through empirical comparisons of Amazon Alexa and Google Nest devices and a cross-modality study versus graphical interfaces, confirming both its usefulness and limitations. Third, a dedicated and validated VUI usability questionnaire is developed to address conversational and auditory interaction needs. Fourth, the Context-Aware Usability Scale (CAUS) is introduced for multimodal in-vehicle systems, integrating contextual factors such as traffic, cognitive load, and environment. Additionally, an AI-augmented evaluation framework for healthcare interfaces demonstrates the value of sentiment analysis, eye-tracking, and confusion prediction. Overall, this work provides validated, context-aware tools for advancing VUI and multimodal usability research.Programa de Doctorat en Informàtic

Physical Interaction and Viewpoint Optimization in Active Video Games: A User Experience and f-Divergence-Based Approach

    No full text
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalThe incorporation of active technologies into video games has fostered the development of new forms of physical interaction, particularly in controlled environments such as treadmills. This thesis analyzes and proposes improvements to the user experience in running applications through exergames, without requiring additional hardware. First, different running applications that combine playful and athletic elements are compared, revealing that video games with narrative structures and interactive incentives elicit higher levels of immersion, competence, and flow than traditional simulators. Subsequently, the gameplay experience is evaluated when using the same exergame on the floor and on a treadmill. The results indicate that treadmill use increases the level of challenge and concentration while maintaining a positive experience in both conditions. Finally, an automatic model for viewpoint selection in three-dimensional environments is introduced, based on divergences from information theory. This approach enhances scene visibility and composition by dynamically and adaptively highlighting key elements. The results of this research contribute new strategies for optimizing both interaction and visualization in active video games, with potential applications in health, physical training, and extended reality.Programa de Doctorat en Informàtic

From Negative Knowledge to Best Practices for Enhancing Reusability of Sketches in Procedural 3D CAD Models

    No full text
This paper contributes to advancing the quality of 3D procedural models by proposing practices based on the principle of “how to avoid doing it wrong” derived from analyzing negative knowledge in CAD modeling. The described framework adopts the three levels of quality identified in the literature—usability, reusability, and design intent richness—while focusing specifically on deriving best practices to prevent failures based on negative knowledge related to reusability. The framework is built on the premise that quality issues hindering reusability can be categorized into three interrelated but largely independent types, each affecting the sketches, datums, or features within a procedural model’s tree structure. In this work, the study of sketches is addressed. The negative impact of typical failures, identified through representative case studies that illustrate both design and redesign errors, is analyzed to extract best practices that ensure CAD model reusability. While this study results in a practical guide for avoiding sketch-related errors that compromise the reusability of CAD models, the main contribution lies in demonstrating a framework that transforms negative knowledge into effective best practices

    No full text
This thesis examines the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on physical and mental health during emerging adulthood, taking into account cultural and contextual variables specific to Spain and Latin America. Study 1 focused on a sample of Spanish young adults, addressing the impact of ACEs on physical health—an area that has received little attention during this life stage. Study 2 analysed the relationship between ACEs, coping strategies, and the manifestation of psychopathic and altruistic traits. This study adopts an innovative approach by considering specific combinations of ACEs rather than analysing them in isolation. Study 3 was conducted with a sample of Latin American young adults, expanding the analysis to include expanded ACEs, which take into account economic and social factors relevant to that context. The thesis proposes culturally sensitive intervention strategies aimed at preventing and addressing the adverse impact of such experiences.Programa de Doctorat en Estudis Internacionals de Pau, Conflictes i Desenvolupamen

Pseudopeptidic Coordination Polymers Based on Zirconium-Carboxylate Supramolecular Assemblies

    No full text
Mimicking enzymes with new materials is a promising approach to improve efficiency and sustainability in heterogeneous catalysis. In this contribution, a family of coordination polymers based on N, N′-bis(amino acid)pyromellitic diimide linkers and Zr-oxo clusters has been assembled under solvothermal conditions in the presence of different acids (acetic, hydrochloric, and formic acid). The linker has been prepared from widely available amino acids and pyromellitic anhydride under microwave conditions. Different characterization techniques, such as NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), TGA, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/EDX, confirmed the formation of the pseudopeptidic (PSP) linkers and the subsequent formation of Zr-carboxylate bonds in the Zr-PSP coordination polymer, forming regular homogeneous nanoparticles with hybrid inorganic–organic composition. The PSPs have also been incorporated into defective UiO-67 crystals and employed as catalysts in the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenylacetate under mild conditions, exhibiting a correlation between porosity, residue volume, and activity.F.G.C. and N.M. acknowledge the “Ramon y Cajal” contract with code RYC2020-028681-I and RYC2021-033167-I, respectively, funded MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by “ESF investing in your future,” “European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR.” This work has been partially supported by MICINN-FEDER-AEI 10.13039/501100011033 (PID2021- 124695OB-C22, PID2022-142897OA-I00), MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, and by the European Union Next Generation EU-PRTR (TED2021-129626B–I00 and TED2021-130288B–I00). How does the work context impact us throughout life? A multilevel approach to the interaction between work context and age

    No full text
The aging population presents a demographic challenge that necessitates a multidisciplinary approach. This demographic shift is also transforming the work domain. The age range within teams and organizations is broadening, resulting in increased diversity in experience, cultural values, strengths, and vulnerabilities that creates complex work scenarios that can affect organizational outcomes and workers’ well-being. Work and organizational researchers have contributed to disclose this challenge primarily by adopting a lifespan developmental approach, yielding valuable insights into the relationships between aging and work. However, research indicates that age alone, along with its associated changes, is not a sufficient explanation for these phenomena and additional factors must be considered. Particularly, there is a necessity of further research on the effects of work environment, as individuals’ lifespan changes that impact work-related outcomes, might be more or less adaptive depending on the work context. This dissertation aims to provide empirical evidence of cross-level interactive effects between age and teams' contextual features that might impact key work outcomes related to well-being and performance. Specifically, three contextual dimensions are studied in relation to age: first, teams' age diversity; second, contextual emotional job demands; and third, contextual role ambiguity. These interactions are examined in relation to three respective work outcomes: work performance, engagement, and burnout.Programa de Doctorat en Psicologi

On the Relative Contributions of National and Regional Institutions to Economic Development

    No full text
Institutional quality is recognized as a fundamental driver of long-run growth (Acemoglu et al. 2005) and it has been widely studied at both country and regional levels in the economic growth literature. Nevertheless, the literature is scant on the question of how this relationship behaves when the hierarchical structure of regions and countries is considered. To fill this gap, we propose a novel approach to the question, relying on multilevel econometric techniques. We empirically analyze how much of the effect shown by institutional quality on regional economic development can be attributed to the quality of national institutions. We argue that ignoring the multilevel structure may lead to over-weighting the real influence of regional institutional quality and, conversely, under-weighting (or directly overlooking) the effect of the country's institutional quality on regional economic development. We present empirical evidence that the national institutional level outweighs the possible effect of lower government tiers have on a region's economic development. The authors also acknowledge the financial support of the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación y Universidades, MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, FEDER, UE (projects PID2020-115450GB-I00 and PID2023-148534NB-I00) and Generalitat Valenciana (HIECPU/2020/1 and PROMETEO CIPROM 2022/50).Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume

EASYSPACE. Un espacio público empoderado desde la perspectiva sorda

    No full text
About 5% of the world’s population experiences hearing loss at some point in their lives, often worsened by environmental factors. An estimated 70 million people are clinically deaf, yet deafness remains an “invisible” disability—lacking visible signs and often misunderstood as not requiring specific accommodations. In public spaces, Deaf individuals face exclusion due to numerous physical, technological, and architectural barriers. Policymakers and designers have historically neglected their needs, limiting their participation in society and contributing to spatial and social injustices. This research focuses on the signing Deaf community and draws on the principles of the DeafSpace Project. Fieldwork included video interviews conducted in Italian Sign Language and the creation of a short film. The project highlighted and staged some of the most exclusionary practices in urban space, as seen from the perspective of Deaf users.Programa de Doctorat en Tecnologies Industrials i Material
