Comparative outcomes of surgical versus percutaneous arteriovenous fistulas: a prospective study
Background. For patients undergoing haemodialysis (HD), the choice of vascular access is pivotal in determining
morbidity and mortality outcomes. Traditionally, native arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) have been created through surgical
procedures. However, percutaneous endovascular devices for AVF formation have been introduced into clinical practice,
showing promising early results. This study aims to compare the outcomes of endovascular AVFs (endoAVFs) created
using the WavelinQ EndoAVF System (BD, Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA) and surgically created radiocephalic (RC) AVFs in
real-world settings.
Methods. This prospective, single-centre, two-arm study included patients who underwent the creation of either an
endoAVF using the WavelinQ EndoAVF System or an RC AVF at a university hospital between December 2021 and August
2023.
Results. A total of 20 patients who underwent an endoAVF and 40 who underwent a surgical AVF (SAVF) were included.
Technical success was 100% in both groups. A total of 75% of the endoAVFs and 60% of the SAVFs met the criteria for
physiological suitability. Among the AVFs that reached physiological suitability, the cannulation rate was 66% for the
endoAVFs and 70.86% for the SAVFs. At the 6-month follow-up, the primary and cumulative patency rates were 65% and
75% in the endoAVF group and 57.5% and 60% in the SAVF group, respectively. At 12 months, these rates were 50% and
70% in the endoAVF group and 50% and 60% in the SAVF group, respectively. No serious adverse events were observed.
The reintervention rate was 0.25/patient/year in the endoAVF group and 0.1 in the SAVF group.
Conclusion. The results of our study showed endoAVFs may be a safe and effective alternative to RC AVFs, showing high
rates of technical success and patency with a low rate of reinterventions and complications
Frequency Selection in Continuous Wave Indirect Time-of-Flight Cameras
Continuous wave indirect time-of-flight cameras obtain depth images by emitting a modulated continuous light wave and measuring the delay of the received signal. The wave is modulated sequentially using multiple frequencies. In this article, a new algorithm for the identification of the optimum set of frequencies is presented. The optimization problem is modeled with multiple objective criteria: minimizing the number of unwrapping errors and maximizing the distance estimation precision under given constraints such as the maximum modulated frequency or the minimum unambiguous range of working distances. The dependence of the proposed optimization on each constraint and the performance of the method are analyzed using Monte Carlo simulations
Design of a methodological model for territorial diagnosis for territorial planning based on local knowledge and the population's perception of their region, as a complement to the technical diagnosis, applied in the territorial system of the Association of Municipalities of Northern Morazán in El Salvador, Central America.Programa de Doctorat en Desenvolupament Local i Cooperació Internaciona
Emotional reasoning as a transdiagnostic process in patients with public speaking anxiety. Evaluation and design of a psychological intervention.
Doctorat internacionalThe transdiagnostic perspective suggests that psychological disorders may share underlying processes. Harvey’s model identifies Emotional Reasoning (ER) as one such mechanism, whereby emotions are used to judge reality, leading individuals to equate anxiety with danger. This study examined ER in Public Speaking Anxiety (PSA), a prevalent condition. A systematic review revealed evidence of ER biases in anxiety disorders, though not in depression. Subsequently, the Emotional Reasoning Public Speaking Anxiety Scale (ERPSAS) was developed and validated with a Spanish sample, demonstrating strong reliability. Findings showed that individuals with PSA judged anxious scenarios as more dangerous than objectively threatening ones, confirming the presence of ER bias. Additionally, a self-administered online intervention, HablaRÉ, was created to reduce ER bias. A feasibility study indicated high usability, satisfaction, and adherence (94%), alongside preliminary improvements in ER and PSA symptoms. These findings support the role of ER in PSA and provide novel tools for assessment and intervention.Programa de Doctorat en Psicologi
A declarative approach for interactive process discovery in the clinical domain
Objective: Process Mining (PM) is an established discipline with increasing adoption in the clinical domain. In this context, PM seeks to infer clinical processes from healthcare data collected in the Electronic Health Record. However, the particularities of clinical practice cause that, in most cases, the processes obtained result in an intricate network that hardly corresponds to clinical algorithms and, thus, are difficult to understand for clinical and IT personnel. To address these problems, our aim is to incorporate specialized clinical knowledge into the PM discovery algorithm. Methods: We propose a declarative approach to interactive process discovery in the clinical domain. Concretely, we present a set of declarative techniques that allows clinicians to incorporate their knowledge in the process, based on the Declare formalism. Results: The results of this work encompass both the declarative interactive approach and its implementation in the I-PALIA PM discovery algorithm, as well as an application to a use case for the treatment of prostate cancer. This application demonstrates that the implemented techniques are useful in managing typical problems that arise when applying PM methods to the clinical domain. Conclusion: This work proposes a novel approach with techniques for interactive process discovery in the clinical domain. This approach not only allows the clinical expert to interactively incorporate specialized knowledge into the PM algorithm, but also serves to obtain process models that are more comprehensible and better resemble treatment procedures.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume
Codi: SRM042.
Newton-Okounkov bodies and Picard numbers on surfaces
We study the shapes of all Newton–Okounkov bodies ∆v(D) of a given big divisor D on
a surface S with respect to all rank 2 valuations v of K(S).
We obtain upper bounds for, and in many cases we determine exactly, the possible numbers of
vertices of the bodies ∆v(D). The upper bounds are expressed in terms of Picard numbers and they
are birationally invariant, as they do not depend on the model S˜ where the valuation v becomes a
flag valuation.
We also conjecture that the set of all Newton–Okounkov bodies of a single ample divisor D
determines the Picard number of S, and prove that this is the case for Picard number 1, by an
explicit characterization of surfaces of Picard number 1 in terms of Newton–Okounkov bodies
Codi: SAP439.
Fortunately, schools are moving towards a more critical, egalitarian and inclusive perspective. Teachers are doing a great job to ensure that children receive the best possible education, based on values such as respect. However, it seems that there is still a long way to go in terms of our language, since, currently, the tendency to speak in Valencian, especially among young people, is quite negative, which leaves its future evident.
Linguistic substitution is progressing, and often, many adolescents abandon the use of Valencian outside the academic field due to social pressures, lack of references and a context that favors Spanish. In this project, which will last three years and will always start from the facts and experiences of reality in educational centers, Valencian will be claimed as a full, useful and beloved language, and a series of actions will be proposed to recover its live use in the maximum possible places. In this way, attempts will be made to implement proposals that address this self-hatred. His pages breathe criticism, possibility and desire with his eyes set on a future, in which speaking Valencian is a natural and dignified act

Multifactorial stress combination as a driving force in the decline of uni- and multicellular organisms
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalThis doctoral thesis investigates how plants respond to multifactorial environmental stress conditions (MFSC) caused by climate change, focusing on both the crop Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) and the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Physiological, transcriptomic, metabolomic, and proteomic analyses revealed that stress complexity leads to declining photosynthetic performance, increased oxidative damage, and metabolic reprogramming in tomato. Jasmonic acid was shown to be crucial for mitigating oxidative stress. In C. reinhardtii, MFSC impaired growth and chlorophyll content, with the ROS-deficient mutant rbo1 showing reduced extracellular H₂O₂ and increased cell aggregation. Transcriptomic profiling identified conserved stress-responsive genes across species, suggesting a shared molecular signature. Proteomic and metabolomic data indicated adaptations prioritizing redox balance and osmoprotection. Overall, this work highlights conserved stress response pathways in unicellular and multicellular systems, offering targets for enhancing crop resilience.Programa de Doctorat en Cièncie
