Metal complexes with naphthalene-diimide and perylene-diimide-based ligands: supramolecular interactions and catalytic implications
Compendi d'articlesThis doctoral thesis delves into the design and development of new ligand precursors and organometallic complexes through the combination of two different types of rylene-diimides (RDIs), with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based ligands. The novelty and interest of the results described in this doctoral thesis can be summarized in the following three points: • We show that imide functionalization of PDI/NDIs with NHC units can be used as a way to generate redox-switchable ligands with application in homogeneous catalysis. • We describe how the catalytic properties of a simple metal complex can be reversibly modified by using tailored-designed redox-switchable rylene-decorated NHC ligands, thus offering a new and simple approach to modulate the catalytic activity and to elucidate or review reaction mechanisms. • We describe and fully characterize a new type of (chloride)lp– π interaction between the chloride ligands of the Ir(III) complex and the heterocycles of the NDI/PDI moieties combining spectroscopic/computational determination of the lp–π interaction.Programa de Doctorat en Cièncie
The Titians of Spanish poetic Modernism
Contemporany Spanish poetry has given convincing signs of its attraction to the Renaissance painter Tiziano Vecellio. Interpreting Policies at Emergency Reception Facilities for Refugees in Spain: A Case Study of War Displaced Ukrainian Citizens
The number of displaced citizens due to war, climate change, political or economic factors worldwide is increasing every year (Several authors 2022e). The case of Ukrainian citizens is salient, and has gained momentum due to the invasion and bombings of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022.
Against this backdrop, the European Union witnessed an unprecedented wave of refugees at its doorstep and introduced temporary protection measures under Directive 2001/55/EC, thus simplifying considerably administrative procedures and allowing war displaced Ukrainians to settle in EU soil. It’s been claimed that a de facto positive discrimination scheme has been established in this case. Still, host societies face many challenges, including communication. Displaced citizens' rights include the right to an interpreter. However, due to the fleeting and unexpected nature of migration waves, language services are seldom in place when they are most needed and therefore must be improvised.
This chapter looks at the Spanish Centres for the Reception, Advice and Referral of Ukrainian citizens (CREADEs) set up under the EU temporary protection directive. This response departs from practices with other migrants and may be taken as an example of a positive discrimination policy. But, has it reached the provision of language services? The CREADE language provision model will be critically analysed based on qualitative data collected among a group of agents working in NGOs and other official agencies present in CREADE-Alicante. The main goal is to establish whether the communication arrangements put in place in such centres have been successful and have contributed to the notion of positive discrimination

Multifactorial stress combination as a driving force in the decline of uni- and multicellular organisms
Compendi d'articles, Doctorat internacionalThis doctoral thesis investigates how plants respond to multifactorial environmental stress conditions (MFSC) caused by climate change, focusing on both the crop Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) and the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Physiological, transcriptomic, metabolomic, and proteomic analyses revealed that stress complexity leads to declining photosynthetic performance, increased oxidative damage, and metabolic reprogramming in tomato. Jasmonic acid was shown to be crucial for mitigating oxidative stress. In C. reinhardtii, MFSC impaired growth and chlorophyll content, with the ROS-deficient mutant rbo1 showing reduced extracellular H₂O₂ and increased cell aggregation. Transcriptomic profiling identified conserved stress-responsive genes across species, suggesting a shared molecular signature. Proteomic and metabolomic data indicated adaptations prioritizing redox balance and osmoprotection. Overall, this work highlights conserved stress response pathways in unicellular and multicellular systems, offering targets for enhancing crop resilience.
Odorous emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have low detection thresholds, causing discomfort in nearby communities. These emissions mainly originate from passive surface sources, whose volatilization depends on environmental factors. This study models pollutant dispersion using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in OpenFOAM, representing passive sources as two-dimensional cavities. The emission rate is analyzed based on geometric and physical variables to develop an analytical model that optimizes microscale simulations. To reduce computational cost, neural networks trained with CFD results are employed, enabling efficient predictions of wind fields and pollutant concentrations. The combination of physical models and Deep Learning enhances the assessment of environmental impact and optimizes emission management in urban and industrial environments.Programa de Doctorat en Tecnologies Industrials i Material
Bioactive molecules against proteasome and cysteine proteases. Synthetic approach to vicinal diamines
Confidencialitat, Doctorat internacionalThis PhD thesis presents research advancements in the fields of organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. The work is structured into three chapters, each focusing on distinct topics. The first chapter explores the synthesis of 1,2-diamines derived from aldehydes. This involves a three-step telescoped process, starting with a Darzens reaction to produce intermediate epoxysulfones. These intermediates react with amines to form amino-imines, which are subsequently converted into the final diamines using a reductive agent. The remaining two chapters focus on the design, synthesis, and evaluation of protease inhibitors. The second chapter details the development of novel proteasome inhibitors, designed as enhancements to well-known proteasome inhibitors, exhibiting in vitro activity in the nanomolar range. The third chapter describes the serendipitous discovery and preparation of a new class of compounds containing a carbamoyl azide functional group as a reactive warhead. These peptidyl carbamoyl azides have been identified as potent inhibitors of cysteine proteases.Programa de Doctorat en Cièncie
Archetypal representations of feminity in Catalan and in Spanish literature: a learning situation
The article presents a learning situation for high school that integrates literary education with the gender perspective, through a compared literary constellation between works in Catalan and Spanish. Through the analysis of two female archetypes (the femme fataleand the donna angelicata) a learning situation is proposed that covers literary history from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The activities, from the communicative approach by tasks, are designed to favor the transfer to real contexts, through products such as the rewriting of texts from a feminist perspective (in different formats, from the most classical ones, such as sonnets, to the most modern ones, such as publications or conversations in social media) or final tasks such as the elaboration of visual posters for the 8M or the extension of the literary constellation with multimodal cultural products of the 21st century. The results show a high involvement of the students, a greater awareness of gender representation in literature as well as the usefulness of the implementation of literary constellations in reading education. As a future improvement, it is proposed to incorporate female authors and to attend to the diversity of masculinitie
