    Culturally Considerate Trauma-Focused Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Treatment in Latine/x Populations: A Scoping Review

    Background/Objectives: While theoretical articles describing cultural considerations for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment in Latine/x populations exist, empirical trials are less common. The present study aimed to review the existing literature for empirically tested, trauma-focused PTSD treatments among Latine/x samples to describe treatment outcomes, cultural considerations, and gaps in the existing literature. Methods: For this scoping review, we identified studies that met inclusion criteria as culturally considerate, trauma-focused PTSD treatments reporting symptom outcomes in Latine/x adults. We searched databases (n = 7) and collected 2176 unique records. Six reports met inclusion criteria. Studies enrolled 176 participants into five trauma-focused interventions (e.g., prolonged exposure therapy) and three comparison treatments (e.g., muscle relaxation). Results: Cultural considerations varied from Spanish translation to measuring nervios to the application of cultural values (e.g., familismo, personalismo) in session. Although culturally considerate treatment was associated with PTSD symptom reduction, none of the studies included unmodified trauma-focused treatment as a comparison group. Literature gaps included heterogeneity in methods, treatments, and cultural considerations, which impede the synthesis of current literature and translation from theory to practice. Conclusions: Inferences about the incremental benefits of cultural considerations are limited due to the absence of comparison to unmodified PTSD treatment. By identifying the existing literature gaps, this study aims to support optimal and culturally appropriate treatment for PTSD in Latine/x populations

    Relative Potential for Stand Persistence of Riparian and Upland Aspen Stands of a Semi-Arid Montane Landscape of the Southern Rocky Mountains

    Several studies have predicted a loss of quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) from many western landscapes, but other studies have suggested that aspen persistence is driven by local site factors. Increased frequency of acute drought has been implicated as an important factor driving overstory mortality and reduced regeneration densities in the region. We investigated the relationship between aspen regeneration and site moisture availability potential using ecosystem type as a proxy. We hypothesized that aspen stands growing along perennial-flowing streams would support higher aspen regeneration densities than upland aspen stands. We compared stand structure, groundcover composition, and regeneration densities of nine riparian aspen stands with nine paired upland aspen stands in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Aspen regeneration densities were significantly higher in the riparian aspen stands (845.3 + 318.7 stems ha-1) compared to the upland aspen stands (249.1 + 74.1 stems ha-1) for regeneration shorter than 1 m (p = 0.0391). Riparian stands also exhibited significantly higher forb (p \u3c 0.001) and graminoid (p \u3c 0.001) cover compared to upland aspen stands, suggesting that riparian sites provided higher site moisture availability. We suggest that riparian areas may provide refugia for aspen in the future considering projections of increased incidence of acute drought

    While many scholars have already described N.K. Jemisin’s Hugo Award-winning speculative novel The Fifth Season as one that highlights intersections between race, settler-colonialism, neoliberalism, and, most frequently, climate change, I apply a necropolitical lens to The Fifth Season in order evaluate a relationship that exists between systemic violence and environmental degradation. The Fifth Season depicts a socially inscribed relationship between an othered race of humans, called orogenes, and the land, anthropomorphized as “Father” Earth. Orogenes have a paradoxical social status: they are simultaneously feared and revered for their ability to control the Earth. This paradox is the impetus for many customs and laws on the Stillness that keep orogenes socially and literally on the brink of death. Jemisin’s framework of race and racism, which relies on the same imposed socio-political connection between orogenes and the Earth, does more than simply showcase how race is a social construct; rather, the rhetorical positioning of orogenes as the offspring of a vengeful Earth creates a cyclical, self-sustaining ideology that enacts violences against orogenes and the Earth for their reciprocal relationship. Thus, I use The Fifth Season to extend Mbembe’s theorization of necropolitics by situating the land as a body that can be acted upon in a necropolitical system

    Spatio-Temporal Graph Neural Networks for Streamflow Prediction in the Upper Colorado Basin

    Streamflow prediction is vital for effective water resource management, enabling a better understanding of hydrological variability and its response to environmental factors. This study presents a spatio-temporal graph neural network (STGNN) model for streamflow prediction in the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB), integrating graph convolutional networks (GCNs) to model spatial connectivity and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks to capture temporal dynamics. Using 30 years of monthly streamflow data from 20 monitoring stations, the STGNN predicted streamflow over a 36-month horizon and was evaluated against traditional models, including random forest regression (RFR), LSTM, gated recurrent units (GRU), and seasonal auto-regressive integrated moving average (SARIMA). The STGNN outperformed these models across multiple metrics, achieving an R2 of 0.78, an RMSE of 0.81 mm/month, and a KGE of 0.79 at critical locations like Lees Ferry. A sequential analysis of input–output configurations identified the (36, 36) setup as optimal for balancing historical context and forecasting accuracy. Additionally, the STGNN showed strong generalizability when applied to other locations within the UCRB. These results underscore the importance of integrating spatial dependencies and temporal dynamics in hydrological forecasting, offering a scalable and adaptable framework to improve predictive accuracy and support adaptive water resource management in river basins

    One Size Doesn’t Fit All: Towards Design and Evaluation of Developmentally Appropriate Parental Control Tool

    As children progress through developmental stages, they undergo substantial biological, cognitive, and social changes, creating unique needs for online safety across different age groups (e.g., young children, tweens, teens). The existing parental control tools fail to account for these differences, leaving a notable gap in the literature on parental mediation. To this end, we conducted 10 focus group sessions with a total of 20 parents to understand their preferences for age-appropriate design components that promote self-regulation and open communication, followed by an ideation workshop with four UX design experts to translate these preferences into customized features. We then evaluated these designs (presented as storyboards) through semi-structured interviews with 25 parents. Our study joins the body of work on parental mediation, providing valuable insights into customizing parental control settings as children transition through the developmental stages. Based on our findings, we offer guidelines for future research in these directions

    Cultural Implications in Global Hospitality: New Orleans to Al-Balad

    There is a growing trend in the hospitality industry toward a more accurate cultural representation within hotel properties. Cultural accuracy within hospitality not only allows for a more exciting and unique travel experience for guests, but helps to preserve and sustain local communities and traditions. Building upon research gained through first hand observation, interviews, and academic sources, this thesis aims to explore the integration of global hospitality brands within regionally specific cultures. The resulting conceptual projects integrate a fictional hospitality brand named Josephine into boutique hotel experiences in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the old town of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Al-Balad. Drawing upon cultural and historical research in each region, the projects showcase design from two different approaches. The New Orleans location was designed around the architectural and stylistic approaches of the Spanish, while the Al-Balad location showcases Islamic patterning and ancient Red Sea building practices as its basis of design. The successful execution of both of these designs provides insight into cultural influences in hospitality design in the future. From this research, interior designers can create a consistent model with their clients to build a road map that is settled enough for efficiency and sustainability in building, while embracing regionalism and culturally appropriate design themes
