The Effectiveness and Feasibility of a Quasi-Stepped Care Approach Using A-EBT for Adults With Trichotillomania: An Open Trial
While treatment for trichotillomania has improved in the last twenty years, trichotillomania is considered difficult to treat and often gains made during treatment are not maintained. The literature calls for individualized treatments as a potential way to improve overall symptom improvement. One potential method that is scalable and clinically useful may be stepped care combining digital mental health interventions (DMHI) with individual therapy to improve individualization of interventions while decreasing cost for the individual and therapist burden. This study aimed to test a quasi-stepped care model utilizing both an eight module DMHI followed by six sessions of individual therapy utilizing acceptance and commitment therapy-enhanced behavior therapy (A-EBT). Our results provide preliminary support that combining interventions improved treatment outcomes for adults with trichotillomania. Participants reported significant decreases in hair pulling symptom severity (SMD=2.98) from pretreatment through follow-up and increases in psychological flexibility (SMD=-1.26) from pretreatment through follow-up. This pilot study provides preliminary evidence that a quasi-stepped-care A-EBT model combining a web-based program with brief individual therapy is a feasible and acceptable intervention for adults. Clinical implications are discussed

Exploring Life History Trade-Offs in the Facultative Eusocial Bee Megalopta genalis
Organisms face many trade-offs in how to invest in these traits. One example is the trade-off between reproduction and longevity. Queens of social insects seem to escape this trade-off, producing thousands of eggs daily, despite having a longer lifespan than their workers. Some hypotheses have been proposed to explain this phenomenon, such as an evolutionary change in the molecular pathways that regulate queen investment in maintenance, growth, and reproduction. An alternative hypothesis suggests that the tradeoffs are rarely observed in queens due to the extensive resources provided by the help of workers. While these hypotheses have supporting evidence, they have only been tested in highly social species in which queens are unable to live independently of their workers.
Megalopta genalis is a facultative eusocial bee exhibiting one of two reproductive strategies: the social and solitary. We tested the molecular rewiring hypothesis and the access to resources hypothesis in foundresses of Megalopta genalis. We compared the gene expression in the fat body, oxidative stress, and reproductive anatomy between queens and solitary foundresses before and after offspring emergence. We experimentally removed workers from a group of queens and compared them to control queens who kept their workers.
Our results indicate that queens had larger oocytes than females in the other treatments and also exhibited the most significant shift in gene expression, with 660 differentially expressed genes compared to pre-emergence foundresses. Solitary females did not exhibit a similar shift in gene expression, with only 33 genes differentially expressed compared to pre-emergence foundresses. These results support the access to resources hypothesis. Only eight genes were differentially expressed between queens whose workers were experimentally removed and pre-emergence foundresses, indicating that these genes are sensitive to changes in the social environment. We did not detect any genes that were differentially expressed between social and solitary foundresses before their offspring emerged, as would be expected with the molecular rewiring hypothesis. We did not identify any significant differences in oxidative stress among the nest foundresses. Our results support the hypothesis that queens evade the trade-off between longevity and fecundity by accessing resources provided by workers
GeoXO OCX Prelaunch and On-Orbit Calibration
BAE will build the Ocean Color (OCX) instrument for NOAA’s next-generation Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO) satellite network. The OCX design provides high spatial resolution, moderate spectral resolution, high radiometric sensitivity, and calibration accuracy data at an unprecedented area collection rate to enable significant advances in Ocean Color science. Polarization of the Moon in Visible and Infrared Spectral Bands as a Function of Phase Angle
The Moon can be used as a stable calibration source for on-orbit satellite instruments. This has been enabled by comprehensive work that characterized and modeled the lunar irradiance as a function of wavelength, phase angle, and libration angle. However, the polarization state of the Moon must also be known to enable on-orbit lunar calibration of polarization-sensitive instruments. In prior work, the disk-averaged degree of linear polarization of the Moon as a function of phase angle was measured in ultraviolet and visible spectral bands. Additionally, disk-resolved degree of linear polarization measurements, including point measurements of various lunar regions and images, have been reported for ultraviolet to near infrared bands. In this talk, we report measurements of disk-averaged degree of linear polarization in three visible (450-nm, 520-nm, and 650-nm) and two near infrared (800-nm and 900-nm) bands, calculated from disk-resolved polarization images of the Moon. The visible measurements agree well with previously published disk-averaged values, and to our knowledge, we report the first systematic study of the Moon polarization as a function of phase angle in near infrared bands

Assessing Riparian Evapotranspiration Dynamics in a Water Conflict Region in Nebraska, USA
The escalating pressure on water resources in agricultural regions has become a catalyst for water conflicts. The adoption of innovative approaches to estimate actual evapotranspiration (ETa) offers potential solutions to mitigate conflicts related to water usage. This research presents the application of a remote sensing-based methodology for estimating actual evapotranspiration (ETa) based on a two-source energy balance model (TSEB) for riparian vegetation in Nebraska, US using the Spatial EvapoTranspiration Modeling Interface (SETMI). Estimated results through SETMI and field data using the eddy covariance system (EC) considering the period 2008–2013 were used to validate the energy balance components and ETa. Modeled energy balance components showed a strong correlation to the ground data from EC, with ET presenting R2 equal to 0.96 and RMSE of 0.73 mm.d−1. In 2012, the lowest adjusted crop coefficient (Kcadj) values were observed across all land covers, with a mean value of 0.49. The years 2013 and 2012, due to the dry conditions, recorded the highest accumulated ETa values (706 mm and 664 mm, respectively). Soybeans and corn exhibited the highest ETa values, recording 699 mm and 773 mm, respectively. Corn and soybeans, together accounting for a substantial portion of the land cover at 15% and 3%, respectively, play a significant role. Given that most fields cultivating these crops are irrigated, both pumped groundwater and surface water directly impact the water source of the Republican River. The SETMI model has generated appropriate estimated daily ETa values, thereby affirming the model’s utility as a tool for assisting water management and decision-makers in riparian zones
