Evaluation of a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier for Free Space Optical Communication Applications
Get PDFHigh-power semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are a promising alternative to erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), which are traditionally used for free-space optical communication (FSO). Here, we characterize the performance of a watt-class 1550 nm AuraTM SOA for FSO applications. We demonstrate an open eye diagram for 26.8 dBm SOA output power using the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) tranche 1 protocol. We then show that despite some waveform distortions, frame error rates of 3.9 x 10-4 are achieved for -28 dBm of received optical power with no forward error correction (FEC). Parameters of importance to optical communications such as signal gain, output power and beam quality are presented. We then identify optimal operating parameters for the SOA and discuss its suitability for laser communication applications
The Validation of the Patient’s Endorsement of the Biopsychosocial Model of Chronic Pain (PEB) Scale in Young Adults
Get PDFThis research examined a new tool designed to measure how patients view their chronic pain. While healthcare providers increasingly recognize that chronic pain involves biological, psychological, and social factors (a biopsychosocial approach ), no previous tool existed to assess whether patients share this perspective. This study tested the reliability and effectiveness of the Patient\u27s Endorsement of a Biopsychosocial Model of Chronic Pain (PEB) Scale in young adults with chronic pain. Results confirmed the scale accurately measures a single, consistent concept and correlates with patients\u27 willingness to consider new pain management approaches. Unlike in older adults, the scale didn\u27t predict active maintenance of pain management strategies in younger individuals. However, it did provide valuable additional information when predicting which patients might contemplate changing their approach to managing pain. This research advances our understanding of how patients conceptualize their pain experience and may help clinicians better identify those receptive to comprehensive pain management strategies, though further testing in diverse populations is still needed
Halogeton and Greasewood Poisoning in Cattle and Sheep in Utah
Get PDFHalogeton (Halogeton glomeratus) is a fast-growing annual plant while greasewood (Sarcobatus vermiculatus) is a perennial shrub of the Western States. Oxalates are the toxic principle in halogeton and greasewood. Most losses occur when hungry animals are allowed to graze in heavy stands of halogeton and greasewood. Halogeton and greasewood are always dangerous and become more toxic as the growing season progresses. Here we report on two clinical cases of halogeton and greasewood poisoning in cattle and sheep. Histologically, oxalate crystals were observed in the kidneys of the cow and sheep consistent with oxalate poisoning. Oxalate was detected in the rumen contents using gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Lastly, halogeton and greasewood were detected in the rumen contents of the poisoned cow and sheep using DNA metabarcoding. In summary, multiple lines of corroborative evidence were used to make the diagnoses of oxalate poisoning in these cases

Caregivers\u27 involvement in teaching these skills is beneficial for their child\u27s progress. Using Bug-in-Ear coaching, which provides in-the-moment instructions and feedback to caregivers via Bluetooth headphones, has been demonstrated to be a potential way to train caregivers to teach skills to their children. This current study aimed to evaluate if the use of Bug-in-Ear coaching via telehealth was an effective way to teach caregivers to train their children how to ask for wanted foods using picture cards. The results of this study provide further evidence for using Bug-in-Ear coaching to train caregivers to teach skills to their children

The Brutally Ugly: The Misconceptions and Perceptions of Brutalism in Design
Get PDFBrutalism in design is often labeled as brutally ugly, with its harsh use of raw materials, sharp angles, and exposed structures. This label of brutally ugly is often appled to both graphic designs and its original inspiration of architecture. This stark, unpolished aesthetic challenges traditional notions of beauty, leaving many to view it as cold or uninviting. However, this style was originally designed as a way to vear away from conceptions of nationalism. The style is not purposely ugly rather it has a more focus on functionalism rather than decoration. Brutalism was intended to be practical, economical, functional, and long-lasting, with its utilitarian approach to design reflecting a desire for communal spaces rather than mere visual appeal. Brutalist buildings are often large, geometric, and imposing, with an emphasis on exposed structural elements that convey a sense of strength and permanence
