Bringing Mutuality and Reciprocity into Focus: A Case Study on Sustaining University-Community Partnerships for Local Systems Change and Student Learning
This case study explores a long-term university-community partnership focused on addressing homelessness, highlighting the principles of mutuality and reciprocity in achieving systemic change. Over nearly a decade, the partnership has evolved to engage university resources, faculty, and social work students through research, courses, and outreach activities, such as community surveys, the Point-in-Time Count, strategic planning, advocacy, and service system expansion. These collaborative efforts have contributed to enhanced public awareness, increased state funding, and the establishment of vital services, including a warming center. The case study also underscores the challenges inherent in community-engaged scholarship, including capacity constraints like funding and staffing and alignment issues of academic expectations with community needs. Despite these challenges, the partnership has succeeded in fostering meaningful student learning experiences and community-led solutions, providing a model for sustaining impactful university-community relationships. This article offers implications for universities and organizations considering partnerships to respond to community-identified needs

Atom-Chip Compatible Optical Lattice
A lattice beam configuration which results in an isotropic 3D trap near the surface of an atom chip is described. The lattice is formed near the surface of a reflectively coated atom chip, where three incident beams and three reflected beams intersect. The coherent interference of these six beams form a phase-stable optical lattice which extends to the surface of the atom chip. The lattice is experimentally realized and the trap frequency is measured. Degenerate Raman sideband cooling is performed in the optical lattice, cooling 80 million atoms to 1.1 μK
Investigating Pyrethroid Insecticide Resistance in the Alfalfa Pest Insects \u3ci\u3eHypera postica\u3c/i\u3e (Alfalfa Weevil) and \u3ci\u3eLygus spp.\u3c/i\u3e (Lygus Bugs) in Utah Alfalfa Fields
Chemical insecticides are commonly used to manage the damage to crops caused by agricultural pest insects. Reliance on insecticides for pest management has resulted in insecticide resistance in many insect species worldwide. Alfalfa weevils (Hypera postica) and lygus bugs (species within the genus, Lygus), are major pests to alfalfa hay and seed respectively and cause significant economic damage. The goal of this dissertation was screen Utah alfalfa fields for resistant alfalfa weevil and lygus bug populations, investigate genetic mutations that can influence resistance in alfalfa weevils, and establish which species of lygus bugs are present in Utah alfalfa fields. First, I investigated the concentrations of a commonly used insecticide, lambda-cyhalothrin, needed to kill susceptible alfalfa weevils and lygus bugs. Using this information, I determined diagnostic concentrations and exposure times for susceptible weevils and lygus bugs using a technique commonly used in mosquito insecticide resistance research. The diagnostic concentrations and exposure times are used to determine if a population is resistant to an insecticide, and I used these to screen multiple field populations for resistance. I then screened for genetic mutations in alfalfa weevils that are often found in other resistant insect species. Finally, I identified what species of lygus bugs are present in different alfalfa fields to begin to investigate whether species abundance influences resistance levels in a field. This research is useful because it identifies resistant populations of alfalfa weevils and lygus bugs in Utah, establish baseline metrics that can be used to screen more populations for resistance. It also opens the door for future researchers to further explore resistant mutations in alfalfa weevils, as well and continue to investigate how variations in lygus bug species abundance influences resistance
Dynamics, Predictability and Impacts of Multi-Year La Niña Event
This dissertation investigates the dynamics, predictability, and impacts of multi-year La Niña events. Multi-year La Niña events are referred to as extended periods of unusually cooler tropical Pacific that persist for two or more consecutive winters. These prolonged events can increase the risk of natural hazards such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves in the western US and around the world. Despite their worldwide significance, questions remain about the mechanisms driving their initiation, their predictability, and regional hydroclimate impacts. The first chapter of the dissertation introduces what scientists currently believe causes them, and how well different types of climate models can predict them. It also explains how these events can impact drought conditions in the western United States. The second chapter focuses on the recent 2020–2023 La Niña as a case study. Our study found the uniqueness of this event compared to the past and examined how the Indian and Atlantic Oceans might have helped trigger this unusual event. In the third chapter, we tested whether climate models were able to predict the initiation of the 2020–2023 La Ni˜na. The results suggested that including ocean information from other basins (Indian, Atlantic, and North Pacific) improved the model’s ability to simulate how the event began. Finally, the dissertation examines how these multi-year La Niñas affect winter conditions in the western United States. We found that dry conditions tended to shift north in the second year of these events, and that changes in the stratosphere conditions (approximately 10 miles above Earth’s surface) might help explain this shift. Together, this work provides new insight into what causes multi-year La Niñas, how we may better predict them, and what they mean for people living in regions vulnerable to water availabilit
