    Planning and facilitating hybrid meetings to support relationality during coalition building

    Hybrid events where communities are connected through both in person and online spaces have simultaneously grown in popularity and gotten a bad reputation. While hybrid events have been around for decades, they gained significant traction with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic to increase accessibility for attendees to accommodate diverse needs. Although hybrid events can be beneficial to many, they are not simple to execute. With the increase in hybrid events has come frustration with the low quality interactions between in person and online attendees leading to isolation, technology challenges, and low productivity. We argue the positive affordances of hybrid community-based events outweigh the negative when considering the accessibility and inclusivity that these events foster and that these challenges can be overcome by intentional planning and facilitation. In this presentation we discuss the value of hybrid events using the Bear River Region (BRR) LGBTQ+ Community Coalition as a case study. This BRR Coalition is dedicated to improving health equity and holistic well-being for members of the LGBTQ+ community in northern Utah. In the BRR Coalition we use hybrid meetings and events to connect community members from all across northern Utah to participate. In this tutorial, we share three best practices for planning and facilitating hybrid events, including setting expectations, assigning roles and tasks, and technology strategies through the BRR Coalition as an example. This interactive tutorial will allow participants to share their experiences with hybrid events and brainstorm expectations, roles, and technology strategies for hybrid events they hope to run

    Maintaining long-term community partnerships is a major challenge for community-engaged classrooms. This poster presents a community-engaged learning (CEL) program template for a project shared between multiple courses and instructors, demonstrating how shared resources, skill sets, relationships, and coordination could result in a long-term community partnership linked to multiple community networks. It shows how 3 courses at the Honors College of the University of Utah can weave together learning objectives and cooperative planning for a course module focused on the Native Plants Program, part of the U of U Climate Action Plan

    From Picturebooks to Play: Dialogic Pedagogy for Cultivating Agency and Social Awareness in Young Learners

    This study examines how young children engage with picturebooks, discussion, dramatic inquiry, and writing to negotiate diverse perspectives and develop empathy in an early childhood classroom. Grounded in sociocultural and critical literacy theories, the research explores the role of dialogic pedagogy in fostering young learners’ agency and social awareness. Utilizing a qualitative single-case study design, data were collected over a full academic year in a second-grade classroom through video recordings, field notes, interviews, and student artifacts. Thematic analysis revealed that dialogic engagements supported students in developing a shared language about empathy, resolving classroom conflicts, and exploring actionable ways to support others through collaborative play and inquiry. Findings highlight how sustained, student-driven inquiry fosters critical reflection and social responsibility, offering pedagogical insights into designing literacy experiences that nurture empathy, agency, and collective action. Implications for integrating dialogic literacy practices into early childhood education are discussed

    Morphological and Physiological Responses of \u3ci\u3eCymbopogon citratus\u3c/i\u3e and \u3ci\u3ePennisetum alopecuroides\u3c/i\u3e to Saline Water Irrigation

    Reclaimed water provides a sustainable and economical alternative for landscape irrigation, but its elevated salinity can negatively impact sensitive plant species. This study evaluated the salinity tolerance of two widely used ornamental grasses, Cymbopogon citratus (lemon grass) and Pennisetum alopecuroides (fountain grass), under three electrical conductivity (EC) levels: 1.2 (control), 5.0, and 10.0 dS·m−1. Visual assessments over 62 days showed that both species maintained an acceptable appearance under saline conditions. C. citratus exhibited no foliar damage, with visual scores above 4.6 even at 10.0 dS·m−1, whereas P. alopecuroides showed slight leaf injury but retained a score of 3.9 or higher. Growth parameters, such as plant height, leaf area, and shoot dry weight, decreased significantly in C. citratus with increasing salinity, particularly at 10.0 dS·m−1, where reductions reached up to 51.1%. In contrast, P. alopecuroides maintained stable growth indices under salt stress, although leaf area and tiller number were notably affected at high EC levels. Both species accumulated substantial amounts of sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−); C. citratus showed more pronounced ion accumulation than P. alopecuroides. These findings suggest that both grasses are suitable for landscaping in saline environments, although they employ different physiological strategies to cope with salt stress

    Exploring the Role of Boundary Infrastructures in Facilitating Learning in a Research-Practice Partnership

    This study examines how boundary infrastructures in Research-Practice Partnerships (RPPs) facilitate learning and collaboration between a rural school district and two universities. Using the Learning at the Boundaries framework, we analyze design team meetings, teacher feedback, and co-designed curricular materials. Our findings highlight the roles of boundary spanners, practices, and objects in bridging gaps among stakeholders and fostering sustainable collaboration. This research contributes to the learning sciences by documenting effective processes for organizational learning, emphasizing the importance of structured co-design in educational improvement

    Native American Elders’ Perspectives on Death and Dying

    This article employs a qualitative method to facilitate the expression of 16 Native American elders about their feelings about aging and death. They discussed resentments, acceptance of their life experiences, the inevitability of death, participation in the natural re-cycling of nature, and hopes they had for Native Americans in future generations. Throughout the study, theoretical and empirical findings in the field of psychology and Native American literature are cited to help interpret the participants’ remarks. An extended clinical implications section may be helpful to practitioners

    Potential Impact of Dotted Paropsine Beetle and Other Leaf Beetles on Eucalyptus in Utah

    Dotted paropsine leaf beetle (DPLB) is an invasive eucalyptus pest native to Australia. Its first U.S. detection was in California in 2022. DPLB feeds on several eucalyptus species, with blue gum as its primary host. Feeding damage includes semicircular notches on leaf edges, defoliation of young leaves, and dieback of shoot tips. DPLB poses a threat to eucalyptus plantings across the western U.S. and to cut foliage producers in Utah

    State Legislature Demographics and Anti-Transgender Legislation

    Starting in 2015, anti-transgender bills have been introduced in state legislatures in exponentially increasing numbers, with a sharp uptick in 2020 and numbers that nearly doubled every year since then. These bills concern a wide variety of issues, from sports participation for transgender adolescents to drag bans to restrictions on bathroom usage. This paper finds that only a small percentage of the bills are passed into law, indicating that passing laws is less important to legislators than introducing bills. Given these intentions, this paper seeks to analyze the demographic makeup of chambers that introduce and pass these bills to understand who is supporting these bills and whether descriptive representation has a positive effect on transgender policy priorities. The results indicate that in tightly controlled chambers, more LGBTQ+ legislators indicate more anti-transgender legislation. Additionally, in Republican controlled chambers, having more women indicates a higher percentage of anti-transgender legislation. These findings have important implications for the causes of anti-transgender legislation and the effects of descriptive representation
