Expedited Cellular Uptake of Hydrophobic Antioxidants for Oxidative Stress Mitigation via F127 Micelle Encapsulation

    No full text
Various hydrophobic antioxidants remain unexplored for the treatment of space radiation and oxidative stress due to their inability to enter the cell without a drug delivery vehicle. Here, we explore the Pluronic F127 drug delivery vehicle, known as a micelle, and examine cellular responses following antioxidant delivery and oxidative stress mitigation. We also investigate methods for producing antioxidant-loaded micelles and their potential suitability for astronauts, including the best ways they might be administered during space flight missions. This research paves the way for new antioxidants to be used to protect astronauts from diseases caused by space conditions such as radiation and microgravity

RR Lyrae Variable Stars From the Gaia DR3 Dataset in the Palomar 5 Stream

    No full text
Palomar 5 is a stellar stream orbiting the Milky Way galaxy. Using RR Lyrae variable stars, which are standard candles, the structure of stellar streams can be investigated. Results on the distribution of RR Lyrae variable stars in Palomar 5 have been obtained by Price-Whelan et al. (2020), hereafter PW, using the second data release (DR2) from the Gaia spacecraft mission, but have not been obtained for the third data release (DR3). Using DR3 we investigate whether additional RR Lyrae stars might be identified as part of the stream. Some may be, and these stars have similar locations and proper motions

Urine Supplementation of \u3ci\u3eNostoc Muscorum\u3c/i\u3e in MGS-1 Media

Cyanobacteria have been referred to as the architects of Earth\u27s atmosphere and are widely credited with being the planet\u27s first oxygenators. While it is speculated that cyanobacteria could similarly be utilized to oxygenate the atmosphere of Mars, one constraint is resource scarcity on the planet. Studies have shown that certain cyanobacteria can survive at least short term in media comprised of Martian regolith; however, their ability to thrive long term in such nutrient-deprived conditions is questionable. This study aims to investigate whether a cyanobacterial culture grown in a nutrient-deprived, Mars regolith simulant media can be supplemented with urine to facilitate its long-term survival

Assessing Mycorrhizal Influence on Heat-Stressed Poplar VOC Blends

VOCs are organic compounds released by plants as gases into the atmosphere. They’ve been shown to play important roles in plant defense, plant-plant interactions, multi-trophic interactions, as well as atmospheric chemistry. Some VOCs can be induced as a result of stress. Some Terpenes & LOX pathway products, in particular, have been shown to be inducible as a result of environmental stress, such as drought or heat. Terpenes, which are made of isoprene subunits, are bigger, more complex molecules and have been shown to generally have and antioxidant function. (Vickers et al. 2009

Atmospheric Modeling of Brown Dwarfs With PICASO, SONORA, and JWST

    No full text
Brown dwarfs are celestial bodies outside the solar system that are more massive than planets, but less massive than stars. Since they are less massive than stars, they do not fuse hydrogen in their core, but rather cool slowly over time. However, brown dwarfs still emit light. We can measure this light by taking its spectra. From this spectra, we can learn many characteristics and properties of brown dwarfs, such as their temperature, chemical composition, and much more. Brown dwarfs can be categorized by their spectra into M,L,T and Y spectral types. Since brown dwarfs lack hydrogen fusion as an internal energy source, they are cooler than stars, with temperatures ranging from 2400 K to 250 K. These cooler temperatures allow for the formation of molecules that form condensates and clouds in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs. To better understand the physics of both brown dwarf and planetary atmospheres, it is important to create models that are good fits to the observed spectra

Analysis of Total Solar Eclipse Images

    No full text
In efforts to comprehend and predict space weather, specifically solar flares and coronal mass ejections, studying the Sun\u27s corona is crucial. The innermost corona layer is best observed during a total solar eclipse when brighter light interference is minimized. Citizen CATE captured corona images during the 2017 eclipse, and in preparation for the 2024 event, we enhanced image quality by stacking varied exposure images. This method allows for the creation of radial brightness profiles, starting from the Sun\u27s surface, at 1 solar radii, while other methods such as LASCO typically start at 3.0 solar radii

    BYU University Rover Challenge

THE CHALLENGE Our objective is to produce a robust and well-defined rover which will score greater than the 90th percentile in each of the University Rover Challenge (URC) missions. These missions are as follows: Extreme Delivery Find, lift, carry and deliver objects up to 5kg in mass to predetermined GPS coordinates and maneuver precisely through difficult terrain. Equipment Servicing Accurately manipulate controls on a mock lander, simulating a human\u27s dexterity and speed. Science Detect life in a desert environment, recording the temperature, moisture, and GPS coordinates at the sample site. Autonomy Navigate to multiple GPS waypoints, detect objects with AI, and avoid obstacles using machine vision all without human input

Chemical Herding: Using Chemical Reactions to Steer Colloidal Particles

    Get PDF
Creating the next generation of dynamic colloidal materials that change their structure based on external stimuli may require the capability to precisely manipulate colloidal particles. Colloidal particles can be manipulated using a variety of forces, such as electric, magnetic, and optical, but so far chemical reactions have received less attention. We consider here a novel paradigm for using a chemically active colloidal particle to interact with other, passive colloids and precisely manipulate colloidal particles in a microfluidic device, a strategy which we dub “chemical herding”. Specifically, we show in simulation that chemical herding can be used to move a small number of colloidal particles onto pre-defined target positions. We also highlight experimental progress we have made toward chemical herding
