    Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions

    With the rapid development of generative AI, teachers are experiencing a new pedagogical challenge, one that promises to forever change the way we approach teaching and learning. As a response to this unprecedented teaching context, this collection—Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions—provides interdisciplinary teachers, librarians, and instructional designers with practical and thoughtful pedagogical resources for navigating the possibilities and challenges of teaching in an AI era. Because our goal with this edited collection is to present nuanced discussions of AI technologies across disciplines, the chapters collectively acknowledge or explore both possibilities and tensions—including the strengths, limitations, ethical considerations, and disciplinary potential and challenges—of teaching in an AI era. As such, the authors in this collection do not simply praise or criticize AI, but thoughtfully acknowledge and explore its complexities within educational settings

    Assimilating Satellite-Derived Snow Cover and Albedo Data to Improve 3-D Weather and Photochemical Models

    During wintertime temperature inversion episodes, ozone in the Uinta Basin sometimes exceeds the standard of 70 ppb set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Since ozone formation depends on sunlight, and less sunlight is available during winter, wintertime ozone can only form if snow cover and albedo are high. Researchers have encountered difficulties replicating high albedo values in 3-D weather and photochemical transport model simulations for winter episodes. In this study, a process to assimilate MODIS satellite data into WRF and CAMx models was developed, streamlined, and tested to demonstrate the impacts of data assimilation on the models’ performance. Improvements to the WRF simulation of surface albedo and snow cover were substantial. However, the impact of MODIS data assimilation on WRF performance for other meteorological quantities was minimal, and it had little impact on ozone concentrations in the CAMx photochemical transport model. The contrast between the data assimilation and reference cases was greater for a period with no new snow since albedo appears to decrease too rapidly in default WRF and CAMx configurations. Overall, the improvement from MODIS data assimilation had an observed enhancement in the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of surface characteristics on meteorological quantities and ozone production

    Eurasian Aspen (\u3ci\u3ePopulus tremula\u3c/i\u3e L.): Central Europe\u27s Keystone Species \u27Hiding in Plain Sight\u27

    Knowledge of Eurasian aspen’s (Populus tremula L.) ecological and growth characteristics is of high importance to plant and wildlife community ecology, and noncommercial forest ecosystem services. This research assessed these characteristics, identified aspen’s habitat optimum, and examined causality of its current scarce distribution in central Europe. We analyzed a robust database of field measurements (4,656,130 stands) for forest management planning over 78,000 km2 of the Czech territory. Our analysis we used GIS techniques, with basic and multivariate statistics such as general linear models, ordination, and classification. Results describe a species of broad ecological amplitude that has heretofore attracted little research attention. Spatial analysis showed significant differences between aspen and other forest non-forest cover types. Additionally, we found significant association between the proportion of aspen in a stand, the size of forest property, and the forest category. The results demonstrate historic reasons for aspen’s widespread presence, though contemporary occurrence is limited. This study advances the concept of a quantitatively based aspen ecological optimum (niche), which we believe may be beneficial for numerous aspen associates in the context of anticipated warming. Irrespective of local ecology (i.e., the realized aspen niche), the study confirms that profit-driven policy in forestry is chiefly responsible for historic aspen denudation in central Europe. Even so, we demonstrate that ample habitat is present. Further solutions for improving aspen resilience are provided to support these keystone systems so vital to myriad dependent flora and fauna

    Discriminative Stimuli Promote the Efficacy of Delay Tolerance Training

    Schedule thinning occurs after functional communication training to teach individuals to tolerate delays to accessing functional reinforcers. One challenge that can emerge during schedule thinning is poor discriminated use of the newly taught functional communication response (FCR). Although prevalence of this treatment challenge remains largely unknown, it appears to be relatively uncommon during schedule thinning approaches that incorporate arbitrary discriminative stimuli. In contrast, several studies using naturalistic discriminative stimuli during delay tolerance schedule thinning have reported this treatment challenge. In the current study, we examined the efficacy of embedding arbitrary discriminative stimuli into delay tolerance schedule thinning to improve discriminated responding. In addition, we examined if we could subsequently transfer stimulus control properties from the arbitrary to naturalistic discriminative stimuli. The findings of this study have implications for procedural modifications to improve the efficacy of delay tolerance and systematically remove discriminative stimuli to promote generalization

    Aspen Forest Condition Assessment and Restoration Guidance

    This preliminary report is the first installment of an ongoing aspen assessment at Bryce Canyon National Park (BCNP). Over a 1.5-year period beginning in 2021, I assembled available BCNP and conducted a preliminary field survey to gain a better understanding of the quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) resource within the Park. Findings suggest a long history of vegetation mapping with mixed results in terms of highlighting aspen presence a notable species of overall low coverage as well as aspen importance, at BCNP. In brief, though this species has limited presence, it is of high biodiversity conservation value. According to a 2002 vegetation map, aspen total approximately 0.13% of the total area of BCNP. Monitoring plots installed in the fall of 2021 broadly confirm an earlier survey that primarily wild ungulate browsing (with notable exceptions of cattle browse along the west boundary) is having a significant impact on successful aspen recruitment. Exceptions include areas on the east side of BCNP ( below the rim ) and recently burned areas where ample regeneration seems to be overwhelming browse levels. I recommend a thorough survey of aspen throughout BCNP to gain a more credible assessment of conditions, as well as to develop a park-wide management plan for this important habitat forest type
