    Who Gets to Decolonize: A Reflection on the Importance of Positionality in the Decolonization of Digital Learning Spaces and Learning Design

    Decolonization as a term and concept gained prominence in the 20th century as new nations emerged from the cessation of the global colonial project which primarily saw European countries occupying different parts of the world. In modern times, interests in decolonization have taken different forms, particularly in learning design and digital learning spaces. In the digital space, researchers mainly suggest introducing indigenous perspectives and cultural lenses in the design of digital learning environments and the design of emerging technologies that embed indigenous perspectives (Nede, 2023). This reflexive essay discusses the importance of positionality in digital learning spaces and learning/instructional design. While acknowledging that existing approaches are critical, and often center marginalized groups or voices in decolonization, we also argue that the current landscape may resemble a free-for-all regarding who can engage in decolonization. We further contend that positionality and the implications of these positions need to be discussed more in the emerging literature on decolonizing digital learning spaces

    Computational Models as Tools for Supporting Responsive Teaching

    It is widely agreed that science instruction should help students build new knowledge on the foundation of their prior knowledge. Responsive teaching refers to a family of teaching strategies that pursue and build on student ideas. We introduce a particular approach to responsive teaching and examine how it can be supported by the use of computational models. We analyze an 8th grade science teacher\u27s facilitation of a class discussion near the end of a lesson on sound. We present a moment-by-moment characterization of her responsive teaching moves, highlighting the ways she used a computational model to help students articulate and examine their thinking. Our findings make empirical contributions to literature concerned with responsive teaching and literature concerned with the role of computational models in constructivist approaches to instruction

    Analytic Solutions for Volume, Mass, Center of Gravity, and Inertia of Wing Segments and Rotors of Constant Density

    In the preliminary design of aircraft lifting surfaces, accurate mass and inertia properties can be difficult to obtain. Typically, such methods as computer-aided design or statistical processes are used to determine these properties. These methods require significant time and effort to implement. The present paper presents an exact analytic method for calculating the volume, mass, center of gravity, and inertia properties of wing segments and rotors of constant density. The influence of taper, spanwise thickness distribution, airfoil geometry, and sweep are included. The utility of the method is presented, and the accuracy is evaluated with various test cases via percent difference with a corresponding computer-aided design model. These case studies demonstrate the present method to be accurate to within about 1% for typical wing geometries and within about 1.3% for typical propeller geometries

    Developing a Hyperspectral Remote Sensing-Based Algorithm to Diagnose Potato Moisture for Water-Saving Irrigation

    Appropriate water supply is crucial for high-yield and high-quality potato tuber production. However, potatoes are mainly planted in arid and semi-arid regions in China, where the precipitation usually cannot meet the water demand throughout the growth period. In view of the actual situation of water shortage in these areas, to monitor the water status of potato plants timely and accurately and thus precisely control the irrigation are of significance for water-saving management of potatoes. Hyperspectral remote sensing has unique advantages in diagnosing crop water stress. In this paper, the canopy spectral reflectance and plant water content were measured under five irrigation treatments. The spectral parameters that respond to plant water content were selected, and a hyperspectral water diagnosis model for leaf water content (LWC) and aboveground water content (AGWC) of potato plants was established. It was found that potato tuber yield was the highest during the entire growth period under sufficient irrigation, and the plant water content showed a downward trend as the degree of drought intensified. The peak hyperspectral reflectance of potato plant canopies appeared in the red wavelength, where the reflectance varied significantly under different water treatments and decreased with decreasing irrigation. Six models with sensitive bands, first-order derivatives, and moisture spectral indices were established to monitor water content of potato plants. The R2 values of partial least squares regression (PLSR), support vector machine (SVM), and BP neural network (BP) models are 0.8418, 0.9020, and 0.8926, respectively, between LWC and hyperspectral data; and 0.8003, 0.8167, and 0.8671, respectively, between the AGWC and hyperspectral data. These six models can all predict the water content of potato plants, but SVM is the best model for predicting LWC of potato plants. These results are of great significance for guiding precision irrigation of potato plants at different growth stages

    Disability Education in Medical Schools: A Paradigm Shift for Inclusive Care

    Disability education for medical students is often insufficient and can contribute to health disparities for people with disabilities. Our interdisciplinary curriculum development team created a longitudinal 4-year disability education model aimed at improving patient care for people with disabilities. Central to our curriculum are progressive sessions aligned with students\u27 medical journey, including three required sessions covering interdisciplinary healthcare teams, implicit bias, health disparities, disability culture, shared decision-making, communication, and self-determination. Through the inclusion of people with disabilities, an interdisciplinary curriculum development team, and trainee-driven advocacy, our longitudinal multi-phasic disability education curriculum seeks to mitigate health disparities. Our innovative approach addresses the gap in disability education, fostering more compassionate and inclusive healthcare practices

    High Sugar Diet Alters Immune Function and the Gut Microbiome in Juvenile Green Iguanas (Iguana Iguana)

    The present work aimed to study whether a high sugar diet can alter immune responses and the gut microbiome in green iguanas. Thirty-six iguanas were split into four treatment groups using a 2×2 design. Iguanas received either a sugar-supplemented diet or a control diet, and either a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection or a phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) injection. Iguanas were given their respective diet treatment through the entire study (∼3 months) and received a primary immune challenge 1 and 2 months into the experiment. Blood samples and cloacal swabs were taken at various points in the experiment and used to measure changes in the immune system (bacterial killing ability, lysis and agglutination scores, LPS-specific IgY concentrations), and alterations in the gut microbiome. We found that a sugar diet reduces bacterial killing ability following an LPS challenge, and sugar and the immune challenge temporarily alters gut microbiome composition while reducing alpha diversity. Although sugar did not directly reduce lysis and agglutination following the immune challenge, the change in these scores over a 24-h period following an immune challenge was more drastic (it decreased) relative to the control diet group. Moreover, sugar increased constitutive agglutination outside of the immune challenges (i.e. pre-challenge levels). In this study, we provide evidence that a high sugar diet affects the immune system of green iguanas (in a disruptive manner) and alters the gut microbiome

    Adoption and Efficacy of Tiered Water Pricing: Evidence From Utah

    Drought conditions and a rising population in Utah have created significant demand for urban water conservation. Senate Bill 28 (SB28) passed in 2016 by the Utah State Legislature reflects an effort put forth by the state to address urban culinary water consumption by requiring an increasing block rate pricing structure for retail culinary water providers in Utah. Recent and historical literature suggest that tiered water prices, though potentially more effective than non-price tools, need to be aggressive to achieve conservation. In this paper, I aim to understand the adoption of tiered pricing in Utah, it’s role in conserving water, and whether adoption of tiered pricing influences urban water consumption. I use econometric tools to observe the change in residential water consumption before and after a municipality adopts a tiered water pricing structure. My results suggest that adoption of tiered pricing has little to no effect on residential culinary water consumption and I consequently make recommendations for policy improvements

    An Analysis of Targeted Physical Therapy Against Medial Epicondylitis

    Medial epicondylitis, more commonly known as golfer\u27s elbow , is a musculoskeletal condition involving the common flexor tendon in the forearm at the attachment point of the medial epicondyle of the humerus bone. The repeated use of this tendon causes inflammation, swelling, as well as other types of straining that results in minute damage that accumulates to the overall strain and complications that come with medial epicondylitis. Targeted physical therapy is the overall recommended treatment for this condition. However, there is limited consensus to the most effective interventions. Mixed methods were used to investigate the possibility of the success of certain treatments compared to other alternative treatments while investigating innovative alternative options that could be more effective. An innovative treatment method utilizing shockwave and laser therapy proved to be most effective in reducing pain levels in patients following treatment
