Establishing Methods for \u3ci\u3eIn Vitro\u3c/i\u3e Static Culture of Gut Microbiomes for Nutritional Intervention Studies

    Get PDF
The National Cancer Institute reports colorectal cancer as the leading cause of cancer death for individuals under 50 in the United States (American Cancer Society). These rates continue to rise with poor diet, microbiome dysbiosis, and gut inflammation being the primary drivers. Our lab performs nutrient- intervention studies on DSS/AOM colitis-induced mouse models fed the total Western diet, reflective of the average American’s diet. A poor diet promotes gut microbiome dysbiosis and subsequent colitis, ultimately yielding colon cancer. We seek to understand how the introduction of a bioactive compound may lessen or promote these effects in in vivo mouse models. The objective of this project was to develop an in vitro experimental model that representatively cultures the gut microbiome, providing deeper insight into direct interactions between bioactive compounds and the gut microbiome. This methodology will provide wider access to this field of research by using common materials found in labs

Evaluating Exoelectrogenic Potential Through Hydrogen Production

    Get PDF
This research project investigates the electrical output of local exoelectrogenic bacteria to develop sustainable energy sources. By identifying and optimizing these bacteria, the aim is to advance microbial electrochemical cells. The experiment involved collecting and culturing local bacteria, then measuring their hydrogen production through the use of an H2Blue test. Successful outcomes could lead it to become an eco-friendly energy solution

Kosher Kitchens: A Balance of Faith and Function

    Get PDF
Jewish dietary regulations (kashrut) are followed as a religious practice derived from the Torah, teaching what food one can eat and how to prepare it. The customs require the separation of meat and dairy, the consumption only of specific beasts, and the adherence of ritual slaughter (shechita). Being kosher is a way in which Jewish individuals can be spiritually trained and obey God\u27s commandments while generating a sense of sanctity within daily life. Aside from religious significance, keeping kosher also emphasizes ethical eating and cultural heritage. The practice promotes humane treatment of animals, cleanliness in food handling, and enriching Jewish traditions from generation to generations. By following these dietary laws, individuals become more conscious of what they eat and feel a strong sense of belonging to their religion and community

Through the Lens: Analyzing Apple\u27s \u27Shot on iPhone\u27 Social Media Marketing Campaign

    Get PDF
While promoting the iPhone 6s, Apple launched the #ShotOniPhone campaign. It encouraged iPhone users to share photos under the tag #ShotOniPhone. Was the campaign a success? Why? Did the campaign increase iPhone sales? What can we learn from #ShotOniPhone

Ethical Concerns and Implications of Expanded Carrier Screening

    Get PDF
The rapid evolution in the field of genetics is often met with uncertainty and skepticism. With the advancements in genetic technologies, expanded carrier screening (ECS) has emerged as a powerful tool in reproductive medicine. While ECS provides prospective parents with insight into their genetic risk, it also raises serious ethical questions for many

Forage Sampling Guide for Agronomic Crops

    Get PDF
Forage sampling is a valuable tool that provides producers with quality information for calculating feed rations and marketing their forages. To ensure that this information is accurate and reliable, it is important to understand how to collect these samples correctly. Sampling tools have been developed that simplify this process and improve accuracy

From Feedback to Insight: Using Hierarchical Clustering Analysis to Identify and Analyze Feedback Dimensions in Online Courses

    Get PDF
The demand for online courses continues to increase, as do the critiques of their effectiveness. Studies have found that peer interactions positively impact the online course experience and that peers can offer feedback to each other at the instructor\u27s level with proper guidance. To help understand this feedback, researchers have identified feedback dimensions. Most feedback dimensions have been created through inductive coding, not exploratory data analysis approaches. This study sought to identify those feedback dimensions that perhaps had been missed or were highly associated with those already existing in the literature, hoping to inform research and practice to improve the feedback activities existing within the online undergraduate education courses

Open Educational Resources for and as Assessment

    No full text
The need to rethink assessment in higher education has become increasingly urgent due to the shift to remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent introduction of various generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools. Globally, instructors are called to redesign their assessment practices to make them more innovative, authentic, and empowering

Amplifying Indigenous Wellbeing: ‘Imi Pono Survey Development and Validation

    Get PDF
The growth of indigenous research methodologies and calls for data sovereignty are reshaping the discourse around evidence-based policymaking. This article summarizes the development and validation of the ‘Imi Pono Hawai‘i Wellbeing Survey, which examines wellbeing from indigenous, holistic, and strengths-based perspectives. The survey is anchored to a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) model of wellbeing created through a community-participatory process involving diverse stakeholders. Early results show Native Hawaiians to be major contributors to Hawai‘i’s wellbeing, consistently reporting higher rates than non-Hawaiians for civic engagement, family relationships, and spirituality, as well as connections to culture, ‘āina, and community. This project informs strategic planning, reporting, and advocacy efforts among research partners who are committed to assessing and improving Kanaka Maoli wellbeing
