    Experimental Workflow: Assessing Lead (Pb) Cytotoxicity in Vaginal Epithelial Cells

    The vaginal epithelium is a highly absorptive mucosal barrier that plays a vital role in defending against pathogens and maintaining reproductive health. However, its permeability also raises concern about the bioaccumulation of potentially harmful elements (PHEs), particularly in relation to products designed for intimate use. Recent studies have identified the presence of heavy metals, including lead (Pb), in a wide range of cosmetic and hygiene products such as tampons. Lead is a well-known toxic element that interferes with essential cellular functions, mimicking biologically important metals like zinc, calcium, and iron. This study investigates the absorption of lead by an immortalized vaginal epithelial cell line through controlled exposure to varying Pb concentrations. Using viability assays and morphological analysis, the project aims to characterize the cellular response and potential damage associated with lead uptake. The findings will provide insight into the extent of absorption and cytotoxicity associated with Pb in hygiene products. Beyond public health implications on Earth, this research is relevant to NASA\u27s mission to protect astronaut health during long-duration spaceflight. In closed-loop space environments where menstrual hygiene products must be compact, sustainable, and safe, understanding chemical exposure risks is critical. This project contributes foundational data to inform both terrestrial product safety and future standards for human health protection in space exploration

    Mapping Accretion Around the Black Hole X-Ray Binary MAXI J1803-298 With Reflection

    MAXI J1803-298 is a recently discovered transient black hole (BH) X-ray binary that went into outburst on May 1st, 2021, and was detected with MAXI/GSC1 onboard the ISS. NuSTAR observed MAXI J1803-298 four times during its outburst (see Table 1, Figure 1)2,3. I modeled the spectrum to see reflection features and learn about the inner accretion disk and the environment around the BH. Figure 1 and Table 1 show that the outburst started roughly on May 1st, the peak was on May 14th, and the last observation was on June 17th

    Locking-It-In and Doubling: Mediating Second-Grade Students\u27 Activity With Multiplicative Thinking

    Using activity theory as a lens, we aimed to understand what second-grade students\u27 interactions revealed about their thinking and what mediated students\u27 engagement with important multiplicative ideas. In this setting, students interacted with multiplicative thinking using a coding robot and other artifacts as mediating tools. Through qualitative analysis, we found that students interacted with three concepts related to multiplicative thinking (i.e., composite units, doubling, iterating), and the lead mediators in their interactions included the robot\u27s remote, dry erase marker and table, and peers/teacher. Students gravitated to artifacts that made sense to them, and the implication is that students need agency in opportunities to use artifacts and have interactions with rules and the community to make meaning of complex mathematical ideas

    A case of milkweed poisoning in cattle in Colorado

    Milkweeds, Asclepias spp., are herbaceous perennials of the Apocyanaceae family. Milkweeds contain several cardiac glycosides, cardenolides, that are toxic. Clinical signs associated with milkweed toxicity are generalized weakness, difficulty in breathing, rapid weak pulse, bloating, violent spasms, paralysis, and death. Here we report a clinical case of milkweed toxicity in cattle due to contaminated hay. Clinical signs observed in the poisoned animals were consistent with cardenolide toxicity. Milkweed was detected in the rumen contents of the poisoned cow using DNA metabarcoding. In summary, multiple lines of corroborative evidence were used to make the diagnoses of milkweed poisoning in this case

    Bird Richness as a Mediator Between Greenspace and Mental Health Relationships

    Neighborhood greenspaces are widely known to benefit bird diversity and human mental health. However, whether bird richness mediates the relationship between greenspace and mental health is unknown. We ascertain such mediation effects in 294 census tracts in Los Angeles City. We obtained greenspace data from one-meter resolution satellite imagery, bird species data from eBird citizen science datasets, and prevalence of poor mental health from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mediation analysis combined with spatial error models was used to assess the mediating effects while controlling for geographic, demographic, and socio-economic factors. We found that the higher greenspace percentage was associated with increased bird richness (β = 0.188, p \u3c 0.001), and such bird richness was associated with reduced prevalence of poor mental health (β = − 0.020, p = 0.010). The bird richness partially mediated the relationship between the greenspace percentage and the prevalence of poor mental health, as evidenced by a decrease in coefficient efficiency from − 0.020 to − 0.017. Our findings underscore the need for public health policymakers, landscape architects, and greenspace managers to consider biodiversity-friendly strategies in the design of urban greenspaces to enhance both wildlife habitats and human mental health

    Using Trail Cameras to Detect Small Mammals

    Traditional methods to detect wildlife, including nuisance animals, are not often successful at detecting small mammals. By modifying the deployment of trail cameras, including using a portable tunnel, we have successfully developed a small mammal method that has been used to inventory animals at Zion National Park and Cedar Breaks National Monument. We provide details on how to modify simple trail camera deployment. We also provide detailed instructions on how to create a portable small mammal tunnel to improve species detection and identification
