    Building Bridges and Breaking Barriers: Instructional Videos for Intercultural Communication

    I\u27ve created instructional YouTube videos focusing on Intercultural Communication. My goal was to make academic material/learning accessible to the general public. I have completed the background research, the script writing and editing, the filming and video editing, and it has been a learning curve. However, I’ve been able to translate academic information in such a way that more people can understand it and learn from it. As people watch these academic videos, they will not only learn facts and terms about intercultural communication, but more importantly they will learn how to be more understanding people. They will learn to be less quick to judge, but quicker to wonder why they think and act the way that they do. These videos make research available to people. They allow for academic learning to happen, despite the inaccessibility of academic work. Though there are videos that already exist about intercultural information, they either lack academic support or are full of academic jargon. Both of which can have negative impacts on viewers. If people seek out information about intercultural communication, and they first come across a video of a professor using jargon that they don’t understand, they may get discouraged and give up. Or they may seek simpler videos that have information that is incorrect. The videos I have created are filling the gap in instructional videos about intercultural communication

    Increasing the Use of Data-Based Individualization and Data-Based Decision-Making in Secondary Resource Settings

    Data-based decision-making (DBDM) and data-based individualization (DBI) are two evidenced-based and high-leverage practices that improve student outcomes when implemented with fidelity. Unfortunately, these practices face various implementation obstacles, particularly when applied to students with intensive academic, functional, and behavioral needs in a secondary school setting. With this project, I aimed to improve my personal practice to provide secondary special education teachers in my district with professional development and support to understand, implement, and sustain the implementation of DBDM and DBI. Report 1 describes a day-long professional development session about DBI as applied to intensive reading interventions provided by middle school special educators. Report 2 delineates the process and outcomes of one-to-one coaching conferences on the DBDM process as practiced with academic and functional behaviors or skills. Additionally, this report describes collaborative sessions when teachers involved in the secondary resource teacher induction program met virtually to give each other feedback on their application and implementation of the DBDM process. The report includes materials used in the PD session, the coaching conferences and collaborative sessions, along with my reflections to improve for future iterations of supporting teachers throughout the DBI and DBDM process

    Info-CELS: Informative Saliency Map-Guided Counterfactual Explanation for Time Series Classifications

    As the demand for interpretable machine learning approaches continues to grow, there is an increasing necessity for human involvement in providing informative explanations for model decisions. This is necessary for building trust and transparency in AI-based systems, leading to the emergence of the Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) field. Recently, a novel counterfactual explanation model, CELS, has been introduced. CELS learns a saliency map for the interests of an instance and generates a counterfactual explanation guided by the learned saliency map. While CELS represents the first attempt to exploit learned saliency maps not only to provide intuitive explanations for the reason behind the decision made by the time series classifier but also to explore post hoc counterfactual explanations, it exhibits limitations in terms of its high validity for the sake of ensuring high proximity and sparsity. In this paper, we present an enhanced approach that builds upon CELS. While the original model achieved promising results in terms of sparsity and proximity, it faced limitations in terms of validity. Our proposed method addresses this limitation by removing mask normalization to provide more informative and valid counterfactual explanations. Through extensive experimentation on datasets from various domains, we demonstrate that our approach outperforms the CELS model, achieving higher validity and producing more informative explanations

    Characterizing the Dynamic Nature and Regulatory Mechanisms of the Tramp Complex

    In every living cell, RNA molecules play crucial roles in carrying genetic information and regulating various biological processes. To maintain the cell\u27s health, it is essential to remove defective or unwanted RNA molecules through a process called RNA surveillance. This dissertation focuses on a key component of RNA surveillance in the cell\u27s nucleus, known as the TRAMP (Trf4-Air2-Mtr4 Polyadenylation) complex. By combining biochemical, biophysical, and structural approaches, this research uncovers new insights into how the TRAMP complex assembles, regulates its activities, and interacts with RNA molecules. The findings reveal that the TRAMP complex undergoes dynamic changes in its shape when it binds to RNA and that specific parts of the complex are critical for controlling its functions. Additionally, we show that RNA molecules move back and forth between different parts of the complex depending on the length of the poly(A) tail located on the 3’ end of the molecule. Efforts to determine the three-dimensional structure of the TRAMP complex using advanced microscopy techniques are also described. This work enhances our understanding of how the TRAMP complex works to help maintain the quality of RNA molecules within the cell

    Design, implementation, and reflection from an interdisciplinary course in museum studies

In Spring of 2023, I developed a special topics course titled Collection Material Handling to introduce students to museum management using Utah State University collections on the Logan, UT campus. The cross-listed upper-level course brought 16 USU students together from two disciplines: anthropology and natural sciences. The publication details how I used various learning theories to guide the creation of course content and how I structured and implemented activities in the classroom and in the collections. Examples of worksheets, activities, student feedback, and recommended improvements to assignments are provided. I encourage instructors to use these resources within current course offerings or implement their own versions of the course within and beyond the USU campuses
