    Site Specific Reliability-Targeted Snow Loads and Winter Wind Parameters Across the World

    This report presents a framework for estimating Reliability Targeted Snow Loads (RTSLs) and Winter Wind Parameters (WWPs) at locations outside the Conterminous United States (OCONUS). The methodology integrates ground-based in-situmeasurements with gridded global climate products to generate spatially continuous RTSL estimates for nearly any location in OCONUS. RTSLs are computed at qualifying in-situ stations, and predictive models relating gridded climate products to in-situRTSLs enable estimation at locations lacking direct measurements. This report describes the development of the in-situ annual maximum snow load database, the construction of global gridded climate summaries, the estimation of site-specific RTSLs and Service Targeted Snow Loads (STSLs), and the creation of global prediction maps. All key datasets and processing tools are publicly accessible, supporting transparency, reproducibility, and future methodological extensions

    A Longitudinal Pilot Evaluation of Valued Living: An Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-Based Digital Mental Health Intervention for Autistic Adults

    Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) are scalable, accessible, and easily contextualized to the needs of autistic adults, making them a promising resource to help address common barriers to high quality mental health supports. The current preregistered study employs an open trial design and a mixed methods approach to assess the preliminary efficacy of a DMHI among N = 56 autistic adults. The co-created DMHI contains six sessions based in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), in a skills-training context, aiming to improve subjective wellbeing and quality of life. We found that changes in subjective wellbeing were observed at post-test (4-weeks following baseline), but these changes were not maintained at follow-up (10- weeks following baseline). However, changes in quality of life were observed at post-test and maintained at follow-up. Changes were also observed in our secondary outcomes, including psychological distress and psychological flexibility, most of which were maintained at follow-up. The current study provides preliminary support for the efficacy of an ACT-based DMHI to improve subjective wellbeing and quality of life among autistic adults

    Improvisation of Mands Using Augmentative and Alternative Communication

    Research shows that young children who use pictures to communicate can use colors, shapes, and functions of items to request when the specific picture of the item is not available. This problem-solving skill is called improvisation, which this study taught to a preschool aged participant with communication delays. A four-year-old preschool student was able to make these requests with basic colors, shapes, and three function pictures. They also were able to make these requests for items not taught to them in different settings. This suggests that improvisation training can be successfully implemented with preschool aged children with communication delays and they can generalize these skills to other items and settings

    Quicklime-Based Self-Healing Concrete for Bridge Deck Applications

    Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world. However, over time, it can crack and deteriorate, especially on roads and bridges exposed to harsh weather and deicing salts. Inspired by the long-lasting durability of ancient Roman concrete, this study explores the self-healing capabilities of concrete incorporating quicklime (calcium oxide) aggregates to extend the service life of bridge decks. For this purpose, three concrete mixtures were developed using local materials: one without quicklime (C-Q 0%) and two with 2% (C-Q 2%) and 4% quicklime (C-Q 4%). These mixtures were tested for fresh properties, strength, durability, and crack-healing performance. To evaluate healing ability, three crack width ranges were studied to represent field variability: two microcrack ranges (100–200 µm and 200–300 µm) and one macrocrack range (300–550 µm). The pre-cracked specimens were exposed to cyclic water/air-dry and deicing salt solution/air-dry conditions, simulating typical environmental exposures for bridge decks. Crack healing was monitored in three stages: surface-level healing using optical microscopy and crack width microscope, internal crack depth healing via water flow tests and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and compositional analysis of filling products through SEM-EDS. Results showed that incorporating quicklime increased the stiffness of the concrete and reduced workability, primarily due to heat generation during mixing, which lowered the available water. Despite this, quicklime enhanced strength and durability, improving resistance to abrasion, freeze-thaw damage, and chloride penetration, although drying shrinkage increased with higher quicklime content. Also crack healing was faster and more complete with higher quicklime content. Besides quicklime content, initial crack size was found to be critical: specimens with smaller cracks healed faster and more completely than those with macrocracks. Exposure to deicing salt solution enhanced surface crack closure across all specimens and improved internal healing in specimens with larger crack widths. Conversely, healing was reduced in microcracked specimens exposed to deicing salt/air-dry cycles. While cyclic deicing salt solution generally improved surface closure in both micro- and macrocracked specimens, internal healing improvements were mainly observed in macrocracked specimens. Further research is needed to confirm the formation of healing products and clarify the specific influence of exposure conditions
