Midlife Wellness: Building Healthy Lifestyle Habits to Ensure Quality of Life

    No full text
Life expectancy has increased significantly, but women often spend their later years in poor health unless they take proactive steps to build healthy habits early. This fact sheet provides information on healthy habits women can develop to help manage hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause and reduce long-term health risks

Most Utahns Support Affirming Rights of Great Salt Lake

    No full text
A combination of water diversions and climate change-related shifts have led to record low water levels and increasing salinity at Great Salt Lake (GSL) (1, 2).  Low water levels not only impact those directly dependent on the lake—brine shrimpers and migratory birds, for example—but also the millions of individuals living along the Wasatch Front. Increasing toxic dust levels from exposed lakebed and potential shifts to snowpack in the region are of primary concern. Children and marginalized communities are especially vulnerable to the respiratory health impacts of toxic dust (3, 4). According to the 2023 Utah People & Environment Poll (UPEP), 87% of Utahns are “concerned” or “very concerned” about the drying of GSL and related issues (5)

Critical Student Agency in an Integrated Social Studies Unit

    No full text
Background: Research has highlighted the value of centering student voices and agency in classroom contexts, yet few curricula explicitly foreground critical agency in their design. This qualitative case study examines how students enact agency within an integrated curriculum that combines computer science, social studies, and Indian Education for All (IEFA) standards. The unit focused on tribal sovereignty and why treaties still matter for indigenous people today, enabling students to connect their lived experiences to broader sociopolitical contexts. Data were collected through classroom observations, student and teacher interviews, and student artifacts. Results: Analysis revealed that students performed agency in three interrelated ways: as experts, investigators, and advocates. In the expert role, students demonstrated mastery of content, research, and computational skills; as investigators, they engaged in inquiry-based exploration of food accessibility issues; and as advocates, they positioned themselves as agents of social change. These findings suggest that integrated, student-centered curricula can cultivate critical agency, enhance computational and disciplinary learning, and promote social justice orientations. Conclusions: By centering student agency, social studies classrooms have the potential to become spaces where learners are co-contributors alongside the teacher and engage with social issues. The study provides empirical evidence for designing curricula and professional development that support student-led inquiry and action, preparing youth to participate democratically and take civic action

A Case Study of Suspected Sheep Losses due to Chokecherry not Death Camas

    No full text
Death camas (Zigadenus paniculatus) is a toxic plant often associated with poisoning cases in livestock, especially in sheep, in the spring on mountain foothills. Consequently, when sheep are found dead in mountain foothills, and death camas is present, it is often implicated as the potential cause of death. However, this may be over simplistic as there may be other plants that may also contribute to, or are the cause of, death in sheep. In this study, we present a case of approximately 200 sheep out of a band of 400 that died within 24 hours of beginning to graze on a mountain foothill in northern Utah. Even though death camas was present at the location, based upon additional research and data we now believe that death camas was likely not sufficiently abundant to be the cause of poisoning that many sheep. Follow up controlled dosing experiments suggest that chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) may have been the cause of death. This study details the toxicity of the chokecherry found at the location where the sheep died

Conditioned Feed Aversion as a Means of Conditioning Livestock to Avoid Consuming Toxic Plants Growing in South Africa : An Overview

    No full text
Significant economic losses to the livestock industry are caused by the ingestion of toxic plants in South Africa, among which the most dangerous ones are Moraea pallida (geeltulp), Urginea/Drimea sanguinea (rooislangkop), Senecio latifolius (Staggers Ragwort), and Geigeria ornativa (vermeerbos). Conditioned feed aversion is a potential means to address this issue. Treating animals with an aversive substance along with an extract of the sensory characteristics of a specific plant conditions animals to avoid the plant. Geigeria ornativa, unlike the other three plants, is non-aversive. Following treatment for aversion, the induced aversion fades with time and eventually breaks down. Continuous exposure to an aversive mixture following aversion treatment ensures sustained aversion to G. ornativa

Bridging Gaps in Data Utilization: An Evaluation of the Rural Utah Data Symposium

    No full text
This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Rural Utah Data Symposium, an event designed to address data-driven decision-making among rural leaders. The symposium features expert-led presentations on the rural economy, healthcare, housing, mobility, broadband, and wellbeing. Data were collected through an online exit survey with a 67% response rate (n = 35). Attendees rated presentation quality, learning outcomes, and overall satisfaction. Findings show high ratings and positive learning outcomes, demonstrating the symposium’s value in empowering informed decision-making. Recommendations include increasing interactivity among attendees, broadening content scope, and expanding statewide representation to further support data utilization in rural Utah
