“And That Is the Basis of ARLIS/NA”: Enduring Values across the Fifty-Year History of the Art Libraries Society of North America
Since its founding in 1972, the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) has helped art information professionals develop, promote, and improve library and information resources and services. For the society’s fiftieth anniversary, a group of members who previously served on the Strategic Directions Committee reflect on the society’s initiatives—past and present—that highlight the values of collectivity, inclusion, and transparency. The authors make recommendations as possible ways for ARLIS/NA to continue building on its history over the next fifty years, particularly that of documentation, so that members can better draw on the society’s history
The Impact of Hierarchical Memory Systems on Linear Algebra Algorithm Design
Linear algebra algorithms based on the BLAS or extended BLAS are not able to
achieve high performance on multivector processors with a hierarchical memory system
due to a lack of data locality. For such machines, it is necessary to implement ‘block’
linear algebra algorithms in terms of matrix-matrix primitives (BLAS3). The design of
efficient linear algebra algorithms for these architectures requires an analysis of the
behavior of the matrix-matrix primitives and the resulting block algorithms as a function of
certain system parameters (cache size, number of processors…). It is particularly crucial
that the analysis of this behavior identifies the limits of performance improvement possible
via blocking and any contradictory trends that require tradeoff consideration. Ideally, the
analysis should also yield insight into techniques a compiler could use to automatically
restructure code to improve performance on systems with hierarchical memories. In this
paper, a methodology which facilitates such an analysis is proposed and used to analyze
the performance behavior of the BLAS3 primitives used in block methods. A similar
analysis of the blocksize/performance relationship is also performed at the algorithm level
for block versions of the LU decomposition and the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization

The Sweet Public Domain: Celebrating Copyright Expiration with the Honey Bunch Series is a celebration of the reinstatement of public domain day on January 1, 2019, after a twenty-year hiatus due to the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act. This digital collection features a republication of the children’s book series Honey Bunch, which began publication in 1923, supported by essays on the book series, copyright and the public domain. The Honey Bunch series follows the adventures of four-year-old Honey Bunch, along with cat Lady Clare and doll Eleanor, as the child encounters a succession of firsts—her first visit to the city, her first days on the farm, her first little garden, her first visit to the seashore, and more. Accompanying essays provide an introduction to and history of the series, exploring its themes of domesticity, materialism, and childhood bliss within the context of the Great Depression, girls’ series books, and the Stratemeyer Syndicate. Supporting epistemic justice through institutional student agency: district leaders’ conceptions of shared power
This study explored the possibility that supporting institutional student agency beyond the classroom setting can lead to authentic power sharing and build more equitable systems, particularly for historically marginalized students in K-12 public education. This study sought to understand the potential for and barriers to enacting district-level policy and practice aimed at supporting epistemic justice through building institutional student agency. The notion of supporting epistemic justice through institutional student agency bridges educational equity and definitions of agency because it calls for a systemic approach to ensure people who are excluded from power have agency over decisions that impact them the most (Fricker, 2007, 2013; Radoilska, 2020). This qualitative study used a conceptual framework of institutional student agency that operationalizes necessary conditions for sustained epistemic justice through policy and practice to analyze the role of district leadership in creating and implementing policy in public secondary schools. To address the final research question, it applied the tenets of Critical Policy Analysis (CPA) to the policies discussed by participants. Analysis revealed district leaders had a strong conceptual understanding of institutional student agency and a sense of critical responsibility to implement but most examples of existing practices and no policy examples met the full definition of institutional student agency. The findings indicate the conceptual framework offers a powerful lens for identifying policy language and implementation practices to strengthen existing practices into institutional student agency.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'. All the president’s people? The origins of affective attachment towards political leaders
This dissertation examines the origins and development of affective attachment to political leaders—termed Presidential Identification (Pres-ID)—by investigating how political contexts and exposure shape emotional connections between voters and political leaders. Drawing on scholarship about partisanship, social identity, and leader-follower relationships, this study proposes Pres-ID as an alternative conceptualization of partisanship in democracies where the traditional notion of affection to political parties is weak or absent. Across four empirical chapters, the study combines longitudinal surveys, experimental studies, and cross-national data to identify both contextual and micro-level mechanisms that generate Pres-ID.
The five-wave repeated cross-sectional surveys in the first empirical chapter investigate campaign dynamics in Indonesia, showing that Pres-ID fluctuates throughout the electoral cycle, with a notable increase approaching election day. Panel data further indicate that accumulated exposure to political content and candidate messaging strengthens affective bonds, revealing the role of campaign communication and timing in shaping Pres-ID. The second empirical chapter also looks at Indonesia and focuses on how exposure to a ground-level instantiation of campaign strategies fosters identification. The results of a spatial analysis of a post-canvassing survey show that direct or visible canvassing efforts significantly influence affective attachment. Particularly, canvasser visit triggers Pres-ID to a greater extent than canvassing materials. Geolocational analysis indicates that proximity to campaign activity enhances the likelihood of emotional connections to a candidate. The third empirical chapter employs two survey experiments to explore how voters respond to prototypical leaders, along with their antagonistic political messaging, from candidates with either Islamist or nationalist profiles. Results show that affective attachment is most responsive to antagonistic appeals delivered by Islamist candidates, suggesting that religion-based prototypicality acts as a critical source of emotional resonance. Using cross-national analysis, the last empirical chapter demonstrates that higher levels of political competitiveness are associated with stronger levels of affective attachment to presidential candidates. This finding supports theories that heightened political rivalry intensifies emotional political identification.
Taken together, these findings contribute to a growing body of scholarship on political identity, partisanship, and affective polarization by showing how presidential identification emerges when strategic campaigning fuels voter exposure to political messages. The dissertation concludes by highlighting the implications of the results for theories of personalized partisanship in multi-cleavage societies. Exploring teacher feedback literacy: practices, challenges, and cultural responsiveness in a consolidated district
This explanatory sequential mixed-methods study introduces a novel tri-theoretical framework—integrating cognitive (Hattie & Timperley), practical (Carless & Winstone), and intercultural (Pazio Rossiter & Bale) dimensions—to investigate K-12 teacher feedback literacy. Using this lens, a survey (N=105) and interviews (N=8) revealed teachers strongly prioritize the relational dimension of feedback but are critically constrained by the pragmatic dimension (time, workload, class size). Institutional structures were identified as the primary barrier. Specific findings showed that experienced teachers focus significantly more on self-regulation feedback (Hattie & Timperley's highest level), while special education teachers use significantly more motivational praise. Cultivating social support through MOOC communities of practice in the Philippines
MOOCs in their original ethos had the goal of democratizing education for all and broadening the knowledge gap, particularly in the STEM fields worldwide. This goal was short-lived as they were met with a challenge of completion rates at 10%, which is more than would have existed without MOOCs, but a far cry from what was hoped. Early challenges pointed toward a lack of interactivity with the instructor and social support from peers. Relationships between completers and SRL attributes were studied, and it was thought that highly self-regulated learners were the only ones capable of completing MOOCs. Communities of Practice and cMOOC interventions showed promise in bringing more learners to completion. MOOC Camps are one such example where online MOOCs are used in face-to-face contexts to strengthen the breadth and depth of the content through discussions, debates, and projects with a local facilitator. Social Support is a subscale of SRL that is thought to be a fixed trait, and scales have found it to be a threat to validity in MOOC research on the topic. The Philippines has a robust community of 8000+ MOOCers uplifting one another to MOOC completion and increasing teacher quality in English classrooms. This case study explores SRL-O data, archival course data, and focus group remarks to indicate that help-seeking is very much not a fixed trait and, with the right social supports, it can be cultivated and localized to increase MOOC completion and fill knowledge gaps. The assumption that MOOC learning is only for the highly self-motivated is flawed, and stakeholders should implement them more intentionally. MOOC designers should also devise community building and social support to increase the uptake of their investment in lectures from subject matter experts and realize the original dream of MOOCs – to uplift the world with high-class education, eliminating the place, space, and cost barriers to entry.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'. Effects of episodic familiarity and statistical regularity On intentional forgetting
Intentional forgetting of unwanted information is an essential cognitive function often studied using the item-method directed forgetting (DF) procedure, whereby cuing some study materials with a Forget instruction impairs their memory compared to cuing with a Remember (R) instruction. Across seven experiments, this investigation examined how episodic familiarity and statistical regularity influence intentional forgetting using verbal and pictorial stimuli. In Experiment 1-4, some stimuli were familiarized by a preview phase before the DF phase, and memory was later assessed using an old/new recognition test. Experiment 1 used words, Experiment 2 used fractal images, Experiment 3 included both meaningful and meaningless object images, and Experiment 4 compared words and nonwords. Previewed items showed reduced DF compared to non-previewed items, regardless of the nature of the information, and meaningless stimuli are challenging to intentionally forget regardless of their degrees of familiarization unless they are meaningless verbal material. Experiment 5 and 6 used complex scene images that varied in statistical regularity. Experiment 5 had no preview phase, whereas Experiment 6 introduced episodic familiarity through a preview phase. Experiment 7 assessed the perceived meaningfulness of previewed and non-previewed images and examined how those ratings related to DF magnitudes from Experiment 5 and 6. Experiment 5 showed that statistically regular scenes were more susceptible to DF than statistical irregular scenes. Notably, meaningfulness emerged as a key factor influencing DF across all experiments. More meaningful materials were more susceptible to intentional forgetting. Additionally, when previewing enhanced the meaningfulness of statistically irregular images (as seen in Experiments 5, 6, and 7), it also increased their susceptibility to DF. The electronic structure of the pair-density-wave (PDW) superconductor in the cuprates
Pair density waves (PDWs) are a inhomogeneous superconducting states whose Cooper pairs possess a finite center-of-mass-momentum, ±Qi, resulting in a oscillatory gap in space in the ith directiond. In other words, the PDW order parameter is a Fourier expansion of the superconducting order with non trivial harmonics at ±Qi. As a result, multiple global U (1)-symmetries can be broken by this state resulting in a richer set of topological defects than that seen in conventional superconductors. Here I study the electronic structure of the topological defects of the PDW state, paying special attention to the half-vortex and its electronic structure that can be detected in scanning-tunneling-microscopy (STM) experiments. There is a growing body of evidence for the existence of PDW superconducting order in many strongly correlated materials in the absence of any external magnetic field, particularly in the cuprate superconductors. A crucial feature of the PDW state that reconciles certain aspects of the cuprates phenomenology is that inherently it has a charge-density-wave (CDW) as a composite order parameter associated with it. The view point of this thesis will be theses two orders are intertwined, the PDW giving birth to the daughter CDW. Many aspects of the cuprate phase diagram suggest a unidirectional PDW order parameter maybe be at play in the 2D CuO2 planes, motivating me to adopted the following ansatz : Qx̸ = 0 and Qy = 0. An effective microscopic theory will be forged by embedding the PDW order parameter into a Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian with whom I will compute various spectroscopic properties pertaining to the electronic structure of the PDW’s topological defects. Using the excitation spectrum of the BdG Hamiltonian I will discuss tell-tale signatures of the half-vortex in violations of inversion symmetry. The topography of the “Fermi surface” of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles will be covered for various PDW phases and a brief discussion of quasiparticle interference (QPI) and its role in modulating the dynamic charge-density. The cuprate phenomenology suggests that the PDW order coexists with a uniform d-wave superconductor, which is ordinarily dominate. Building on the analysis of the isolated PDW phase the case of coexisting uniform and PDW superconducting orders will be considered for a defect free state and in the presence of a half-vortex.
An isolated half-vortex is no longer stable in the presence costing orders costing a linear divergent string energy, opposed to the more tame logarithmic divergence, resulting in a confined half-vortex anti-half-vortex pair. This confining potential acts along the branch cut put in the phase field of the half-vortex and arises from a quartic interaction in the Landau-Ginzburg expansion locking the coexisting superconducting phase fields together. A far field approximation will be adopted to illustrate the qualitative effects of the uniform order, paying special attention to this locking of phases. One immediate consequence of this is the uniform order inherits the half-flux quanta of the half-vortex. The spectroscopic properties will focus on the region of the half-vortex where the reconfigured electronic structure can be studied. Furthermore, the case of weak uniform order will be considered for coexistence with a half-vortex, but this restriction won’t be placed on the case of the pristine PDW. Coexistence gives birth to two daughter CDWs setting up additional interference patterns, due to both QPI and the mixing of Fourier harmonics from the presence of the defect. Many robust features remain in tact relative to the isolated phase, such as inversion symmetry breaking, but many new signatures arise. In particular, the possibility of time-reversal-symmetry (TRS) breaking is discussed for the half-vortex using signatures in the daughter CDWs to illustrate this. Various experimental signatures of the PDW will be proposed in relation to STM and angel-resolved-photo-emission (ARPES) as an attempt to aid in uncovering the mystery of high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'.
