Protection and utilization practice of industrial heritage archives in China
Industrial heritage archives are an important part of industrial heritage. As a crucial proof of industrial civilization, they have important historical, economic, cultural and technological values. Based on the current research and practice status of China's industrial heritage archives and combining five batches of national industrial heritage lists, 120 cities have been surveyed. 22 municipal archives and 8 representative examples of industrial heritage archives protection and development work have been focused on. The current status of China's industrial heritage archive work is summarized and analyzed, and methods or technologies that can be used to protect and process these archives are explored to fully realize their valuable value
Decoding climate data modeling and its impacts
AI and data modeling offer opportunities to address climate change by enhancing our ability to compute and predict climate data, track emissions, and provide behavioral nudges. However, these models are not free from biases seen in other areas, such as predictive policing and search engine bias. Further, many corporate communications about climate emissions and impacts can be seen as greenwashing, and the absence of accessible climate impact data creates a data void for people trying to understand the impacts of climate change on their lives. This project investigates how people find and understand information about climate data modeling and its effects on their lives and finances, using a content analysis of corporate ESG reports, interviews, and search tasks assigned to interviewees. A proposed framework aims to help audiences evaluate the effects of a company’s climate actions and reporting, enhancing stakeholder understanding and decision-making processes
Using Program Structure to Achieve Prefetching for Cache Memories
A concise program structure notation, called a program skeleton, is developed that can
be used for program analysis, or if machine-specific details are included, for memory prefetching.
The program skeleton describes the structure of the source code as well as the low-level accessing
behavior. Transformations are developed to create a machine-specific cache memory prefetching
control program, called the prefetch skeleton (PFS), from the program skeleton. A prefetching unit
(PFU) is developed as a simple in-cache processor. The PFU executes the PFS and generates cache
line prefetch requests ahead of CPU demand requests. A variety of PFS-cache machines are
simulated in detail to demonstrate the feasibility of the PFS prefetcher. Instruction miss delays can
be reduced significantly by using a PFS-cache. Some reduction in data miss delays is also obtained
even though the PFS as developed in this initial research focuses primarily on instruction
prefetching. The PFS prefetching scheme improves cache performance without requiring
programmer involvement, since the PFS is generated automatically. By the compiler as it compiles
the source program. The PFS concept is compatible with a variety of programming languages. The
PFS-cache machine is capable of running non-PFS programs, although better performance is

Imperial Concerns at the Heart of the British-Ottoman Rupture, 1914
How does “historic friendship” turn sour? How does a former protector become a “cruel enemy”? This was the situation in which the British Empire found itself during World War I as they fought against the Ottoman Empire, a power with which they had enjoyed almost uninterrupted friendship since the sixteenth century. During that time, Britain had been the Ottoman Empire’s principal defender against foreign incursions that threatened their territorial integrity, as seen in conflicts such as the Crimean War and the Second Egyptian-Ottoman War (1839-41). In 1914, when relations between the two empires seemed to be stronger than they had been in decades, the Ottoman Empire forsook their friendship with Great Britain and entered the Great War on the side of the Central Powers. Yet this did not occur at the outset of the conflict; the British declaration of war on the Ottoman Empire occurred on November 5th, three months after the ratification of the German-Ottoman Alliance and the outbreak of the war in Europe. These three months saw the failure of the British Foreign Office to maintain Ottoman neutrality despite repeated efforts to do so. This resulted in the declaration of war (along with the rest of the Triple Entente) on the Ottoman Empire following their naval attack on Russia
Common Scottish Fairy Beliefs An Examination of The Secret Commonwealth and Witch Trial Transcripts
The emergence of witch hunts in Scotland during the early modern period posed a danger to the sanctity of fairy belief. Fairies existed outside of the bounds of Christian cosmology, or the Christian understanding of the world. Some Christians were able to reconcile this in their minds, but others pushed against it. Those who aligned more strictly with Christian belief—typically, wealthy political and religious authorities—might have seen similarities between fairies and both witches and demons. Fairies were able to shapeshift and fly through the air; they kidnapped children and hosted revels at night. These were traits also attributed to witches, and, while fairies might have not been witches themselves, they might have empowered witches much like demons did. To religious authorities spearheading the hunt for malevolent forces, spirits fit into one of two categories: angelic or demonic. In their perspective, fairies did not fit into the angelic mold—due to the aforementioned traits—so they must be demons

The SemEval-2025 Task 5 calls for the utilization of LLM capabilities to apply controlled subject labels to record descriptions in the multilingual library collection of the German National Library of Science and Technology. The multilingual BERT ensemble system described herein produces subject labels for various record types, including articles, books, conference papers, reports, and theses. For English language article records, bidirectional encoder-only LLMs demonstrate high recall in automated subject assignment
Cholesterols Great Escape!
Ever had a nasty fungal infection? Your treatment likely dealt with cell membranes and sterols. Sterols are essential for cell life as they help maintain fluidity and order in the membrane. When fungal infections invade the body, they present fungal cells that rely on ergosterol for vital membrane function. Some antifungal drugs extract ergosterol in order to disrupt the membrane and trigger fungal cell death. In human cells we have cholesterol which is structurally and functionally similar to ergosterol, with the latter having an extra carbon and double bond. Unfortunately, this similarity causes many antifungal drugs to mistakenly attack both fungal and human cells by extracting the two sterols, leading to harmful side effects like fevers, hypotension, and nausea.Using molecular dynamics simulations, such as the one seen above, we can extract both ergosterol and cholesterol from their respective membranes to compare the forces acting on them, such as hydrophobic interactions and lipid packing. By identifying key differences in these forces, we can better inform antifungal drug development such that they precisely target fungal cells while leaving human cells unharmed. Simulating sterols breaking through the membrane could lead to a breakthrough in safer, more effective antifungal treatments
Connecting at the Cellular Level: A Novel Click-Chemistry Based Visualization of Bile Acid Reuptake
It’s as simple as a click. As long as the right endpieces between two molecules are present, a connection will be made thanks to Click Chemistry. This powerful technique utilizes a copper-mediated azide-alkyne cycloaddition to join molecules together, enabling scientists not versed in the principles of synthetic chemistry to use this technique in their respective fields. Our group applies this technique to visualize the reuptake of bile acids (BAs) along the gut-liver axis. BA uptake has been previously tracked by radiolabeled transport, but not at the cellular level. In this image, HepG2 cells (~15-20 μm), a liver cell line, were treated with Clickable BAs containing an alkyne group. A staining solution with the azide-linked fluorescent tag (red) is coupled to the BAs and visualized under a microscope. At different time points, we can see BAs travel into the cytoplasm (green) and nucleus (blue) where it can exert its effects intracellularly. We are then able to repeat these experiments in vivo to provide further clues in this mystery. By using Click Chemistry, we can connect the pieces of this puzzle to understand how BA uptake occurs as it relates to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma
Iron Resolve
This photo, titled “Iron Resolve”, shows one of the older adults in our research study performing the leg press exercise – a closed-chain, lower-body kinetic exercise – during one of the intervention sessions. The leg press is a compound weight training movement in which the individual pushes resistance away from the body using the legs. Our study aims to examine the effects of a short-term, leg-focused resistance training program on neuromuscular and physical function in older adults. Participants visit our Freer Hall facility twice a week for approximately 40-45 minutes per session to complete five resistance exercises targeting the leg muscles, including the leg press.Before beginning the program, each participant undergoes a comprehensive baseline assessment that includes neuromuscular tests to measure muscle strength, power, and fatigue, along with functional assessments to evaluate mobility, lower-extremity function, and cardiovascular endurance. The same assessments are repeated after the 8-week intervention. By improving lower-body strength, power, and mobility, we aim to support older adults in maintaining their independence, reducing fall risk, and enhancing their overall quality of life and well-being
