    Some Effects of Microteaching, Cooperating Teachers, University Supervisors, and Discussion Style Upon Classroom Teaching During Student Teaching

    The purpose of this study was to examine the assumption that microteaching is an effective method of increasing the range of behaviors employed by teachers in their classrooms after training is completed. The teaching behaviors of interest to this study were certain discussion skills taught and practiced during the microteaching experience. Degree of achievement of the discussion skills during the microteaching and the nature of instruction in these skills during student teaching were seen as intervening variables.A population of 22 student teachers, their cooperating teachers, their university supervisors, and their microteaching supervisors participated in this study. The subjects taught in the specialties of science, English, and social studies.The student teachers audio recorded two of their classroom discussions while student teaching, responded to an interview and questionnaire, and evaluated their cooperating teachers and university supervisors on a high-inference scale.Data collected from the audio tapes were analyzed for frequency of use of the discussion skills. From this analysis, the following results were found: 95% of the lessons employed structuring devices; combining clarifying and justifying questions with probing questions, 56% of the identified student teacher behaviors were probing questions; the majority (77%) of the lessons were directed discussions; and 77% of the lessons employed summaries and/or conclusions."Sum of discussion techniques as a proportion of lesson time" was the dependent variable for the multiple regression analysis procedures which were used to determine the value of the intervening variables for predicting the use of the discussion behaviors.The findings support the following conclusions: (1) When student teachers led classroom discussions, the techniques practiced in the microteaching laboratory transferred to that environment. (2) The majority of the student teachers led directed discussions, with student teachers in social studies leading some exploratory and reflective discussions. (3) For student teachers of English, the behaviors of the cooperating teachers was significantly related to discussion usage. (4) For student teachers of English, the evaluation by the microteaching supervisors was significantly related to discussion usage.     Cross-Cultural Study of Procedural Fairness and Disputing Behavior (Collectivism, Justice)

    Research in cross-cultural psychology and anthropology has suggested that cultural collectivism is a useful dimension for categorizing cultures and that different levels of collectivism may be related to different styles of dispute processing. With subjects from Hong Kong and the U.S., three studies were undertaken to explore the relation between collectivism and dispute processing behaviors. In addition, several factors affecting people's preference for different conflict resolution procedures were examined. The first study showed that the collectivistic Chinese subjects preferred bargaining and mediation over adversary and inquisitorial adjudication, whereas the individualistic American subjects preferred adversary adjudication and mediation to the same extent and preferred both over bargaining and inquisitorial adjudication. Results further suggest that the reason for Chinese subjects' strong preference for mediation and bargaining was that they perceived these two procedures as more capable of reducing the animosity between the disputants. Procedural preference was found to be influenced by the extent to which the procedures were perceived as: (1) granting the disputants process control, (2) capable of animosity reduction, (3) fair, and (4) favorable. The second study evaluated the impact of the relationship between disputants and the "stakes" involved in a dispute on conflict-coping strategies. It was found that a conflict was more likely to be pursued if the stakes involved were large and if the would-be disputant was an outgroup person. Furthermore, Chinese subjects were less likely to pursue a conflict with an ingroup disputant, and more likely to pursue a conflict with an outgroup disputant, than were American subjects. Study 3 was a replication of the second study with completely different procedures. The ingroup-outgroup variable was manipulated by varying the degree of perceived similarity between disputants and the possibility of future interaction. The stakes involved in the dispute were manipulated by varying the amount of underpayment experienced upon the completion of a task. Results of Study 3 are basically similar to those obtained in the second study.     Part One: Extensions of the E and C Equation. Part Two: Measurements of Dielectric Relaxation in Strontium Doped Lanthanum Orthoferrites Using Dielectric Time Domain Spectroscopy

    Part One. The relationships between the Kamlet-Taft β\beta-\pi\sp\* solvation approach and the E and C equation are investigated. The breakup of solvation effects into nonspecific (\pi\sp\*) and specific Lewis base interactions (β\beta) is found to be consistent with the E and C approach. The β\beta parameter is shown to be a special case of the E and C equation for acids with a C\sb{\rm A}/E\sb{\rm A} ratio of 0.03. In addition, the nature of &quot;family dependent&quot; linear free energy relationships is discussed in E and C terms, showing that the two term E and C approach predicts the existence of these relationships and can correlate them without breaking the data into donor types.Correlations of free energies of neutral donor-acceptor interactions with the enthalpy based E and C parameters shows that the entropies of these interactions is related to enthalpies but not linearly dependent, as required by simple linear free energy relationships. The molecular interpretation of the entropy correlations is shown to have physical significance and is not fortuitous in nature.The relationships between the more general, three parameter, ect parameters and the E and C parameters are investigated by linear transformation. The results show the ect parameters for neutral bases are not well enough defined to allow their use at this time.Part Two. Dielectric Time Domain Spectroscopy (TDS) is shown to be applicable to the study of a set of low dopant level (<1% Sr\sp{2+}), lanthanum orthoferrites with the general formula La\sb{\rm 1-x}Sr\sb{\rm x}FeO\sb3. The complex dielectric response functions are related to electron transfer in locally trapped charged defects in the lattice. The samples show more than one frequency of dielectric loss function in the range from 800MHz to 2 GHz. The barriers to dielectric relaxation are found to be on the order of 0.10eV, much smaller than that expected for conductivity in these systems. The temperature dependent behavior of the dielectric loss function in these systems exhibits nonBoltzmann behavior, suggesting that rate equations based on simple models of static well depths are not applicable.Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-15T23:19:05Z (GMT).     "Exploring Nurturing ""Connecting Chemistries"" of Two Exemplary Community College Instructors With Freshmen Considered Nontraditional/underprepared"

    "This qualitative study explored the existence and nature of a ""connecting chemistry"" among exemplary community college instructors and freshman students considered nontraditional and underprepared. Two recognized exemplary instructors and seven nontraditional and underprepared students participated in this in-depth interview study. It revealed that teacher beliefs and values affect the development of instructor core teaching motivation and that this motivation becomes paradigmatic to their professional behaviors. Furthermore, even though the instructor's beliefs and values already existed in childhood, there were at least two to four life episodes that enlarged or expanded them. Regardless of core motivation, both instructors participating in this study have remarkable intrinsic abilities that nurture underprepared and nontraditional students, and they use these abilities to build learner self-esteem and confidence. The association among each teacher's background, character, and inner inspiration or core motivation for either the subject matter as liberating or the deeper mental and emotional needs of students is critical to their being exemplary instructors."Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-25T19:56:26Z (GMT).
