Crisis and progress: The rhetoric and ideals of a nineteenth century reformer, George William Curtis (1824-1892)

    No full text
"George William Curtis and his fellow reformers were part of the new knowledge elite of journalists, academics, and other professionals that developed in the second half of the nineteenth century. The rise of a national press allowed more pervasive and persistent publicity of reform agendas. Sympathetic editors and journalists, like Curtis, considered their role to be that of sentinels and tribunes of the ""public interest"". In this role, they were instrumental in setting the parameters and defining the terms of debate over government's role in fostering the ""good society"" in America. These reformers disdained theory, particularly that of laissez-faire and limited government, in favor of pragmatism and utilitarianism."Curtis and the other reformers borrowed vocabulary and techniques from medicine and the nascent social sciences, and developed methods of political action--media saturation, lobbying, drafting model legislation--which were intended to be applied to various reform efforts. Some historians have seen a dichotomy between scientific and moralistic reformers, or have depicted an evolution from moralism to scientism, but, for Curtis and other mid- and late-nineteenth century reformers, moralism and scientism co-existed in their rhetoric and ideals, if at times uneasily."The rhetoric of crisis was one of the major tactics the reformers used to generate public attention, popular support (or the perception thereof), and political action on behalf of their various causes. Repeatedly when calling for reform, Curtis and other members of the emergent knowledge elite used rhetoric that engendered a sense of crisis in which the government was presented as the only, or at least the most effective, agent capable of intervening to stave off the crisis in the name of an ill-defined ""public interest."""These reformers were usually, like Curtis, affiliated with the Republican party, which recent historiography has shown to be the party of government in the second half of the nineteenth century. The reforms urged by Curtis and other reformers, which entailed the use of government intervention, occurred primarily at the state level, but succeeded at the federal level, too, when Republicans dominated the political process. A study of dislocation structures in bulk-strained and in situ TEM strained nickel aluminide alloys

    No full text
In the research work presented in this thesis, the dislocation structures in bulk strained and in situ TEM strained alloys of hypo-stoichiometric Ni\sb3Al with and without boron, and hyper-stoichiometric Ni\sb3Al with boron have been studied. Bulk samples were deformed in tension to 3% and 9% strain and the resulting dislocation structure studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Particular emphasis has been placed on the dislocation structure vicinal to grain boundaries and transgranular cracks. At both strain levels, the dislocation structures are similar near the grain boundaries and transgranular cracks, and are similar to those observed in in situ TEM straining studies.Samples have been deformed in tension inside the TEM and the dynamic results have been video recorded. During in situ straining, the glide of dislocations bounding stacking faults in the slip trace ahead of a crack tip, nucleation of partial dislocations at the surface, and the glide of these nucleated partial dislocations in the fault plane have been observed. Pinning of super-Shockley partial dislocations and glide of segments of pinned partial dislocations have been observed. Similar stacking fault structures have been observed near the grain boundaries and the transgranular cracks in bulk strained samples and in in situ TEM deformed samples. The change in the stacking fault structures at high temperature has been studied in in situ TEM heating experiments. The super-Shockley partial dislocations slowly overcome the pinning obstacles at 773 K and glide to eliminate the faulted area. The effect of planar-fault energies, line tension of the dislocation, and the elastic anisotropy has been discussed. The Ni segregation at grain boundaries of known Σ\Sigma value in the alloys, Ni\sb{76}Al\sb{24} with and without 100 wt ppm boron, and Ni\sb{74}Al\sb{26} 100 wt ppm boron has been studied by x-ray microanalysis in the HB5 Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:25:19Z (GMT). Natural Resource Management in Papua New Guinea: An Analysis of the Forestry Sector

    No full text
The dissertation argues that this culture lacks any planning ethic directed toward the socially equitable and environmentally sustainable management of forests. Arguing that this is a critical oversight in a country where the majority of forests are owned under customary forms of land ownership, and where the majority of the population still rely on the forests for most of their subsistence needs, the dissertation advances two general strategies that attempt to inject more equitable and environmentally sensitive planning actions into the forest management process.Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-25T18:22:59Z (GMT). On Extracting Coarse -Grained Function Parallelism From C Programs

We built an in-lining based prototype of the memory data-flow analysis system on top of the IMPACT compiler infrastructure. We applied the prototype to analyze the memory data-flow of several MediaBench programs. The experiment results showed that while the prototype performed reasonably well for the tested programs, the in-lining based implementation may not efficient for larger programs. Also, there is still room in improving the effectiveness of the memory data-flow analysis system. We did root cause analysis for the inaccuracy in the memory data-flow analysis results, which provided us insights on how to improve the memory data-flow analysis system in the future.Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-25T20:20:09Z (GMT). A Mechanistic Force Model and Stability Analysis for Contour Turning

    No full text
The stability variations in axial contour turning are investigated via a frequency domain analysis. Three-dimensional stability-limit diagrams, third dimension being the toolpath, are generated for machining a workpiece with concave-convex contours. The reasons for the stability variations along the toolpath are analyzed in terms of the overlap factor (amount of regeneration) and the cutting stiffness variations. A mechanistic model based force-feedback scheme for disturbance rejection and tracking control in radial contour turning is proposed. The stability issues for the force-feedback design are addressed and the relative tracking performance of acceleration and force feedback controllers at various levels of process parameters (depth of cut, feedrate, etc.) are analyzed.Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-25T21:13:11Z (GMT). Three Essays on the Economics of Immigration to the United States

    No full text
"Finally, the time series properties of some migration flows to the U.S. during the 20th century are investigated. The inertial component of migration, associated with the ""friends and relatives effect"" is connected to the hypothesis of unit root. Given the series idiosyncrasies, the performances of the Hasan-Koenker robust unit root test and least square based tests are compared. The tests exhibit some contradictory results. The residuals of the augmented Dickey-Fuller models are heavy tailed distributed. It was expected that the Hasan-Koenker test would reject more often when the unit root hypothesis seems implausible (as indicated by the autocorrelation functions), but this does not occur on a regular basis."Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-25T22:47:55Z (GMT). Cali Pachanguero: A Social History of Salsa in a Colombian City

    No full text
This work explores the adoption and resignification of salsa music in Cali, Colombia, as a case study in the development of contemporary popular identity and experience. By the 1980s, Cali emerged on the global scene as an important centre for salsa consumption and performance, but its roots do not originate in Colombia. Salsa is a transnational style based on Afro-Cuban forms and elaborated by Puerto Ricans in New York City during the 1960s and 70s. The adoption and resignification of this style in Cali sheds light on its diffusion to other Latin American cities, where it has also played an important role in developing transnational links and cosmopolitan sensibilities. This study anchors salsa's local adoption in the spread of Cuban-based antecedents to Colombia during the 1920s--50s, and its relationship to national musical styles during that period. Of particular importance in Cali's scene has been the centrality of recorded music, as both a source of musical sound and also as a commodity with great symbolic value. Chapters 3 and 4 examine the rise of a record-centred dance scene and the rise of record collectors and aficionados. Chapters 5 and 6 trace the influence of recordings on live musical performance in the boom of local orquestas in the 1980s and early 1990s, as Colombian artists absorbed and reinterpreted the sounds they heard on vinyl. Another strong feature of Cali's scene is the participatory ethos that has imbued all spheres of local popular life. These chapters explore how dancing, listening, collecting, and performing salsa have been key practices in framing and reinforcing community bonds during different stages of the city's rapid expansion since the 1940s.Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-25T22:54:34Z (GMT). Examining the Horizontal and Vertical Dimensions of Individualism Within the United States and Denmark: How Culture Affects Values, Moral Orientations and Advertising Persuasion

    No full text
The consequences of these differences for persuasion and cognitive processing of ads appealing to culture-relevant or -irrelevant values were tested through individuals' evaluations of a pair of ads for cancer research (prosocial) or for a lamp (commercial). It was expected that the culturally-relevant appeal would be more persuasive and would be processed more systematically than the culturally-irrelevant appeal. Findings revealed that, although processing expectations were supported, predictions for higher evaluations of culturally-relevant ads were not.Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-28T15:15:49Z (GMT). Embrittlement of Austenitic Stainless Steels by Solute Hydrogen

    No full text
Mechanical properties of austenitic stainless steel were determined as a function of solute hydrogen concentration. Twenty micron thick foils of types 310s and 304 stainless steel were cathodically precharged to saturation and tested in tension at room temperature. X-ray diffraction experiments were performed to measure the lattice strains produced by the interstitial hydrogen and to identify any hydrogen induced phase transformations which might occur.A hydrogen embrittlement was proposed based on the locking of dislocations by hydrogen atmospheres. Hydrogen causes an increase in the yield and fracture stresses in the austenitic stainless steels. Hydrogen also causes planar slip needed for large dislocation pile-ups by limiting the number of active dislocation sources. The hydrogen atmospheres assist in blocking the Frank-Read sources near the pile-up and thereby prevent relief of the stress by dislocation movement. This would result in a brittle type fracture.Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-17T23:58:29Z (GMT).
