Fronto-central changes in multiple frequency bands in active tactile width discrimination task
The neural basis of tactile processing in humans has been extensively studied; however, the neurophysiological basis of human width discrimination remains relatively unexplored. In particular, the changes that occur in neural networks underlying active tactile width discrimination learning have yet to be described. Here, it is hypothesized that subjects learning to perform the active version of the width discrimination task would present changes in behavioral data and in the neurophysiological activity, specifically in networks of electrodes relevant for tactile and motor processing. The specific hypotheses tested here were that the performance and response latency of subjects would change between the first and the second blocks; the power of the different frequency bands would change between the first and the second blocks; electrode F4 would encode task performance and response latency through changes in the power of the delta, theta, alpha, beta, and low-gamma frequency bands; the relative power in the alpha and beta frequency bands in electrodes C3 and C4 (Interhemispheric Spectral Difference—ISD) would change because of learning between the first and the second blocks. To test this hypothesis, we recorded and analyzed electroencephalographic (EEG) activity while subjects performed a session where they were tested twice (i.e., two different blocks) in an active tactile width discrimination task using their right index finger. Subjects (n = 18) presented high performances (high discrimination accuracy) already in their first block, and therefore no significant improvements were found in the second block. Meanwhile, a reduction in response latency was observed between the two blocks. EEG recordings revealed an increase in power for the low-gamma frequency band (30–45 Hz) for electrodes F3 and C3 from the first to the second block. This change was correlated with neither performance nor latency. Analysis of the neural activity in electrode F4 revealed that the beta frequency band encoded the subjects’ performance. Meanwhile, the delta frequency band in the same electrode revealed a complex pattern where blocks appeared clustered in two different patterns: an Upper Pattern (UP), where power and latency were highly correlated (Rho = 0.950), and a sparser and more uncorrelated Lower Pattern (LP). Blocks belonging to the UP or LP patterns did not differ in performance and were not specific to the first or the second block. However, blocks belonging to the LP presented an increase in response latency, increased variability in performance, and an increased ISD in alpha and beta frequency bands for the pair of electrodes C3–C4, suggesting that the LP may reflect a state related to increased cognitive load or task difficulty. These results suggest that changes in performance and latency in an active tactile width discrimination task are encoded in the delta, alpha, beta, and low-gamma frequency bands in a fronto-central network. The main contribution of this study is therefore related to the description of neural dynamics in frontal and central networks involved in the learning process of active tactile width discrimination.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
This report is divided into two parts: Professional Practice Report (PP) and Pedagogical Intervention Project (PIP). The first part is a description of the journey accomplished within the professional internship done during the school year 2022/2023, at the Conservatório de Música do Porto (CMP). This report aims to highlight the activities developed in the initiation to Supervised Teaching Practice, in the specialty area of instrument teaching (Chant and Gregorian Chant), as well as all the research applied to the design, development, implementation and evaluation of a PIP, under the scientific guidance of Doctor Sofia Serra, and pedagogical guidance of Professor Liliana Coelho. The PIP, under the theme, "Case study about the use of a pedagogical website as a motivational and self-regulatory tool for the individual study of singing", has as main objective to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of a pedagogical website, in the motivation and self-regulation of the individual study of singing of the students participating in this project, as well as its impact in the classroom context. This intervention was implemented in CMP, during the 3rd period of the school year 2022/2023 and had as participants four students, three from the Basic Singing Course (BSC), attending the 7th, 8th and 9th grades, and one from the Basic Gregorian Singing Course (BGSC), attending the 9th grade. The research methodology, qualitative in nature, followed an Action-Research approach, centered on a case study. The techniques and instruments used for collecting and producing results were: direct and participant observation, observation grids, field notes recorded in a logbook, audiovisual records (videos, audio recordings and photographs), two questionnaire surveys applied to the students (one before and one after the pedagogical intervention) and documentary research regarding the students' final assessment record. Statistical analysis and content analysis were the techniques used to interpret and analyze all the quantitative and qualitative results of this research. The results obtained show that the use of a pedagogical website has had a very positive impact on the motivation and self-regulation of the students' individual study of singing, as they were able to optimize their time and improve the quality of their study; increase their self-regulation capacity, becoming increasingly autonomous and, in the classroom and performance context, there was an increase in motivation, self-confidence and level of preparation, which was reflected in levels of performance and school results of excellence
The vigil for Peace at Capela do Rato, organized in 1972 by a group of vanguard Catholics in protest against the colonial war, is considered as one of the cornerstone moments – perhaps the most important one – of the Catholic opposition against the Estado Novo and, in particular, against Marcelismo. That means the main objective of the vigil promoters was fully achieved: make sure their gesture would have great visibility and impact, for what two elements hugely contributed – the collaboration of an armed group, the Brigadas Revolucionárias, and the reaction of the civil authorities. The latter opened a conflict with the Church, more precisely with the Lisbon Patriarch, D. António Ribeiro –, for what would first be considered as a mere struggle episode of a Catholic minority elite against the authoritarian regime, soon evinced a complexity not yet studied.
The present doctoral thesis departs from the episode of Capela do Rato to a broader analysis about opposition of Catholic inspiration in the sixties, attempting to contextualize it in the mindset at the time lived in Portugal and abroad. In that way it strives to provide a more informed and enlighten understanding of the way conflicts and tensions happened at that time and the ruptures created – but also continuities – in the period between the last days of the authoritarian regime and the revolutionary instauration of democracy
