    Yaquina Bay and River waters were sampled in May, 1951 "to determine the suitability of these waters for the propagation of fresh market shellfish." (p.1) Found that the intensity and extent of pollution had increased "markedly" since the previous survey of March, 1948. "The waters of the bay are grossly polluted from Toledo to a point about five miles below Toledo." (p.4) Recommended no oyster production between Yaquina and Toledo.     Bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata (Pursh) DC.) is one of the most widely distributed shrubs in western North America. Its value as a browse species has been recognized for more than half a century. Recent concern for the ecological significance of shrubs in natural ecosystems and the serious depletion of many big game winter ranges have led to extensive investiga­tions of bitterbrush. This bibliography is the result of a literature review conducted during a course of graduate study at Oregon State University. It contains informa­tion that should be of interest to both the academic and nonacademic com­munity. This annotated bibliography primarily contains references published after 1967, since extensive reviews were completed earlier. In 1964, Fred­erick C. Hall compiled an unpublished literature review of bitterbrush that circulated primarily in Region 6 of the U.S. Forest Service. Joseph V. Basile published an annotated bibliography of bitterbrush in 1967 as USDA, Forest Service Research Paper INT-44 from the lntermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station. To compile as much information as possible under one cover, the references cited by Basile and Hall are listed collectively in the Appendix. Appreciation is extended to J. V. BasHe and F. C.     From the Introduction: Successful laboratory rearing of adult pink shrimp (Pandalus jordani) requires a knowledge of the optimum conditions of factors such as shrimp density, water temperature and salinity. A one-year study by the Fish Commission at the Newport laboratory was conducted to establish criteria necessary to hold shrimp in aquariums at minimum mortality. The information gained from this study can be applied to both laboratory and field studies. The results will be reported in detail in a final report now in preparation.     The six stories within, "Still and Silent," "Cold Comfort," "The King of Porn," "Miscuts," "In Between," and "Renovations," are part of a work in progress. They attempt to show how the characters, although they may seem to struggle for independence from the family unit, are in fact strengthening the bonds of connection between them. By creating a collection of stories revolving around a single family, I hope to illuminate how this tension between the desire for and the fear of affection, approval, and acceptance shapes the family as well as the characters and creates interdependent relationships. This dependence upon each other may, over time, seem to lessen in importance but never does it truly disappear. In the end, I hope these stories show how important family is, regardless of how good or had they may appear. And if you try to ignore it and pretend your need for it isn't there, sooner or later it'll smack you in the face like a sock full of pennies as a reminder

    Exploring cultural barriers and TEK connections of Kānaka Maoli students in academia

    Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) is a Knowledge-belief-practice system acquired through intergenerational direct and indirect observations representing past and current understandings of environments and integrates Indigenous value systems. TEK has become a popular topic recently as Indigenous stewarded lands contain more biodiversity and are more adaptable. It is critical for Indigenous Peoples to maintain their TEK, even in diaspora. This thesis addresses the challenges and barriers that Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) students face as they attend university away from their communities and addresses Oregon State University by exploring the land grant institution legacy and proposing changes to OSU. It is important to understand how TEK is impacted as students leave their communities; however, TEK is community-specific and cannot be applied across communities because of the subjective nature of how Indigenous Peoples honor, carry, and pass on their Knowledges between and within communities. OSU’s land grant institution legacy makes it a potent place for settler colonialism, and with mindful work, can become a better place for Kānaka Maoli students and their Knowledges to survive and thrive. By following the recommendations and acknowledging this is not the only work to be done, OSU can take the first step in the right direction.Keywords: Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Kānaka Maoli, Academi

    Oregon's estuaries are important ecosystems for scientific study. Consequently, knowledge of what research has been conducted helps us identify benchmarks and plan new projects. A comprehensive bibliography of published research, technical reports, local documents, and data sets is one means of recording this knowledge. For these reasons, the Guin Library staff have compiled bibliographies on Netarts Bay, the Salmon River Estuary, Siletz Bay, Yaquina Bay, the Alsea River Basin, the Yachats River Estuary and the Umpqua River Basin.The Alsea Basin Bibliography focuses on the entire Alsea River Basin, from the mouth of the estuary to the foothills of the Coast Range. This enlarged coverage acknowledges the importance of the Alsea Watershed Study (1959-1974), an early and important long-term research project about the effects of logging on salmonid fisheries. The bibliography also includes works from a follow-up investigation, the Alsea Watershed Study Revisited (2008-2016). The Alsea Basin Bibliography attempts to identify research on the physical and biological aspects of the Alsea River and estuary, with an emphasis on fisheries and natural resources. In addition to some attention to the area’s pre-history, the period covered dates from Theodore Talbot’s 1849 trip through the region through June, 2023.     An illustrated key to the ferns of Oregon

    The purpose of the work is to enable students of botany to identify accurately Oregon ferns, both as living plants and as dried specimens. Therefore, it provides vegetative keys to the families, genera and species of the ferns (Class FILICINAE) found in Oregon. Correct names have been determined using the latest available information and in accordance with 1961 edition of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. The synonomy, a description, and original drawings of each species and subspecific taxon are included. An illustrated glossary and a technical glossary have been prepared to explain and clarify the descriptive terms used. There is also a bibliography of the literature used in the preparation of the paper. The class FILICINAE is represented in Oregon by 4 families, 20 genera, 45 or 46 species, 4 of which are represented by more than one subspecies or variety. One species, Botrychium pumicola Coville, is endemic. The taxa are distributed as follows: OPHIO-GLOSSACEAE, 2 genera: Botrychium, 7 species, 1 represented by 2 subspecies, 1 by 2 varieties; Ophioglossum, 1 species. POLYPODIACEAE, 15 genera: Woodsia, 2 species; Cystopteris, 1 species; Dryopteris, 6 species; Polystichum, 5 species, 1 represented by 2 distinct varieties; Athyrium, 2 species; Asplenium, 2 species; Struthiopteris, 1 species; Woodwardia, 1 species; Pitrogramma, 1 species; Pellaea, 4 species; Cheilanthes, 3 or 4 species; Cryptogramma, 1 species; Adiantum, 2 species; Pteridium, 1 species; Polypodium, 2 species, 1 represented by 2 varieties. MARSILEACEAE, 2 genera, Marsilea and Pilularia, each with 1 species. SALVINIACEAE, 1 genus, Azolla, 1 species
