Project 3.3 -Task 1 Report - Literature review: Hydrogen transport options for vehicle supply

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT: Among the different applications in which hydrogen technology has become the protagonist, the transport sector should be particularly mentioned. It is expected that, by 2030, 1 in 12 cars sold in Germany, Japan, California, and South Korea will be powered by hydrogen, and that more than 350,000 hydrogen trucks will be able to transport large quantities of goods, while thousands of trains and ships can carry passengers without emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The decarbonisation of road transport can be achieved by implementing fuel cells in electric vehicles. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) are a necessary complement to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). FCEVs are more convenient for long distances with better performance for heavy vehicles that can benefit from the higher autonomy provided by hydrogen for long-distance transport, but it has lower energy efficiency than BEVs (Genovese & Fragiacomo, 2023). However, the possibility of rapid refuelling is an important advantage (Sinigaglia et al., 2017). However, the success of the implementation of this new technology is facing several obstacles. Among them, the lack of suitable and connected infrastructure and the high initial investment cost. So, hydrogen refuelling stations (HRSs) must be fully implemented as they are one of the most important parts of the hydrogen economy in the transport sector.N/

ABSTRACT: Aiming for a climate-neutral economy, and the associated transition towards fuels produced from alternative feedstock, and to overcome some biomass pyrolysis unsuitable properties for the conventional combustion devices, plastics pyrolysis also produces oils, whose main compounds are also hydrocarbons, that can be used in conventional engines without so complex and costly upgrading processes. Most of the chemical reactions found in a pyrolysis process are endothermal thus, to fulfill that energy demand, the retrofit of a 4 kW electrical furnace pyrolysis reactor to indirect solar driven energy was assessed aiming to adapt it to a central receiver solar tower with up to 100 kWth-peak, using air as heat transfer fluid. The heat demand along a typical pyrolysis test was experimentally assessed and a heat transfer mathematical model was defined to address the working constraints of the reactor. Additional analysis considering new design parameters were performed, namely sensitive analysis to the length of the new heating coil and its overall heat transfer coefficient, the reactor temperature set point, the inlet and outlet (to the atmosphere) gas temperature and working mass flow rates and temperatures were found to provide the same heat demand and minimize the waste heat. Considering both the heat source facility and the reactor constraints, it was found that the retrofit is possible providing that the product of surface area by the overall heat transfer coefficient (A·U) yields more than 17.7 W/K, for a reactor temperature set point of 450 °C and a maximum temperature inlet of 700 °C.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sublinha-se o facto de que a escolha de um homem de Ciência para acompanhar a mina, denota o reconhecimento da importância estratégica do carvão no almejado desenvolvimento industrial do país.ABSTRACT: This study contextualises and discusses some aspects of Domingos Vandelli's contribution to the knowledge and exploitation of the Cabo Mondego coal deposit in the last quarter of the 18th century. Its main sources are two manuscripts written by him, one of them unpublished, which explain the contours of his approach to and departure from mining works, and the technical guidelines given to the Portuguese Army officer appointed in 1773 by the minister Martinho de Melo e Castro to conduct the mine's research and exploration. It should be emphasised that the choice of a man of science to accompany the mine denotes recognition of the strategic importance of coal in the country's desired industrial development.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Parameter identification and uncertainty evaluation in quasi-dynamic test of solar thermal collectors with Monte Carlo method

    No full text
ABSTRACT: This work presents a comparison between two methods used for parameter identification and calculation of parameter uncertainty applied to the measured data of solar thermal collectors when tested according to ISO 9806:2017. One method is using a weighted least square (WLS) fit and the partial derivative approach described in the GUM (the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement). The second is using the Monte Carlo (MC) method, also described in GUM. Uncertainty evaluation by Monte Carlo method is based on a probabilistic approach and is an alternative way for identification of parameters and determination of the uncertainties. In this work the results were obtained according to Quasi-Dynamic Test (QDT) method for a flat plate collector and an evacuated tubular collector. The least squares (LS) method and a nonlinear regression method (MPFit) are used in the identification of parameters for each iteration of the MC method. For the implemented MC method computation times are also discussed. One disadvantage of the MC method is the computation time which depends on the number of samples in the experimental test quantity files, however with this study we think that the advantages of the MC method outweigh the disadvantages, and it is useful even as a complementary tool in QDT testing of collectors.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

New Greenhouse Gas simulation and mapping tools to support local carbon neutrality agendas: application to the city of Almada

    No full text
ABSTRACT: The aim of this work is to develop three innovative decision support tools: (1) a scenario tool that enables users to interactively design scenarios of activity variables that support decarbonisation trajectories on a local scale; (2) a mitigation tool that translates scenarios into greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, taking into account the identification and prioritisation of the most innovative, cost-effective mitigation options (technological and behavioural) for Portuguese municipalities; and (3) a mapping tool to identify GHG emissions ‘hot spots’ on a local scale. In the first phase, these tools are applied and tested for the case study of the city of Almada in support of the ‘Agenda for a Carbon Neutral Almada by 2050’. These tools will also contribute to the training and involvement of local stakeholders, to improve the design of local GHG emissions mitigation strategies and roadmap. In the second phase, these tools will be further developed so they can be used in other Portuguese municipalities.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Project TradeRES - New Markets Design & Models for 100% Renewable Power SystemsABSTRACT: This report presents the dissemination activities conducted in the scope of TradeRES project during the last 10 months, and the main highlights of the overall project. The content of this report follows the dissemination and exploitation plan (D7.2) and corresponds to an update of the information reported in the previous editions of the progress dissemination report (D7.4 – Dissemination Activity Report). This report describes the key target groups and the key performance indicators (KPI) achieved at the end of the project - general promotion of the project, social media, traditional media promotion and communication of regular news and announcements, publication in scientific journals, special book chapters and participation in workshops and international conferences, organization of scientific events, conferences, workshops, thesis, and dissemination material. Finally, an analysis of the most relevant activities and KPIs is presented in the conclusions. During the development of the project, there was the need to revise the accounting methodology, at the beginning of the 4th year, and the new metrics were applied to the whole duration of the activities. The extension period that was granted to the project, proved to be very valuable, as it allowed for a more comprehensive dissemination of the outcomes, provided additional time to achieve efficient and accurate results, and enabled the preparation of dissemination materials in a more robust manner. The last year of the project was very productive enable to address some KPIs that were missing and further enhance others. In addition, although the great majority of the KPIs were already achieved at the beginning of the last reporting period, the extension of the project, enabled to overcome the foreseen outcome. For example, it was possible to publish 40 conference papers and 40 journal papers, in both cases 100% above the targets outlined in the plan.N/

The importance of the data model of the Geological Digital Map of Portugal in harmonizing geological units: identifying issues in geological mapping [Abstract]

    No full text
These data organization models are widely used by various geological survey organizations (Maxeiner et al., 2024) to better align with current digital world requirements. The implementation of hierarchical relationships while maintaining the rigor of geological characterization of units is often accompanied by a process of redefining ambiguous nomenclature, reviewing boundaries between contiguous maps, and harmonizing the compilations intended for integration. Using the vast and varied information, in both format and dates, within the LNEG repository, the most recent geological mapping (GM) was compiled into a geodatabase. Each mapped geological unit is assigned a unique ID according to the levels defined in the MDCGP, which allows for the characterization of units with other relevant information such as lithology, age, tectonic cycle, etc. (Pereira et al., 2023). Through the compilation and harmonization of these codes, a unique geological legend was obtained, contributing to a continuous GM whenever possible. Creating these maps allows the identification of cartographic inconsistencies of an alphanumeric nature (e.g. nomenclature redundancy, repeated units) which can be resolved through research and bibliographic review, as well as spatial inconsistencies (e.g. adjacent polygons belonging to the same/different unit, poorly defined boundaries) with examples of harmonization of identified issues provided. In more complex cases, field recognition may be necessary. This infrastructure also enables visual comparison of different geodynamic and tectonostratigraphic models adopted by various authors. A key aspect of this work is the optimization of the map production process, regardless of scale, as the systematization of units allows for maintaining coherence of geological knowledge across sheets, thereby continuously supporting model development and predicting which units should be included in a new map. Thus, it constitutes an important tool for identifying geological problems, being crucial in supporting a new resolution by facilitating a more effective and efficient planning of GM for a given region.N/
