Detecting wear and tear in pedestrian crossings using computer vision techniques: approaches, challenges, and opportunities
Pedestrian crossings are an essential part of the urban landscape, providing safe passage for pedestrians to cross busy streets. While some are regulated by timed signals and are marked with signs and lights, others are simply marked on the road and do not have additional infrastructure. Nevertheless, the markings undergo wear and tear due to traffic, weather, and road maintenance activities. If pedestrian crossing markings are excessively worn, drivers may not be able to see them, which creates road safety issues. This paper presents a study of computer vision techniques that can be used to identify and classify pedestrian crossings. It first introduces the related concepts. Then, it surveys related work and categorizes existing solutions, highlighting their key features, strengths, and limitations. The most promising techniques are identified and described: Convolutional Neural Networks, Histogram of Oriented Gradients, Maximally Stable Extremal Regions, Canny Edge, and thresholding methods. Their performance is evaluated and compared on a custom dataset developed for this work. Insights on open issues and research opportunities in the field are also provided. It is shown that managers responsible for road safety, in the context of a smart city, can benefit from computer vision approaches to automate the process of determining the wear and tear of pedestrian crossings.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The right to inclusive education is one that has drawn the attention of public organizations, scholars, and academics world-wide. Students' beliefs and perceptions are a fundamental axis to know the state of the classrooms based on this ethical principle, allowing teaching professionals to promote improvement strategies and programs. This study aims to explore the reliability and factorial structure of the questionnaire "The Attitudes towards Inclusion of Students with Disabilities in Physical Education" (AISDPE) in students belonging to the secondary and baccalaureate educational stages. The sample consisted in 889 students who participated 2 times a week in physical education classes. Reliability tests, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were done. Then, a factor structure with two dimension (cognitive perception and predisposition to action) and 15 items was extracted, showing excellent values for the various selected goodness-of-fit indices. Additionally, a good reliability (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.77–0.79) was attained. The AISDPE might therefore be regarded as a credible and trustworthy measure to examine physical education pupils’ assessments of their attitudes towards inclusive instruction in order to improve social well-being and school health in the classroom.
The characteristics of ‘being a good professional’ in the intricacies of the ethics of the profession and conduct professional ethics (study with professionals and university students in Portugal)
Address the issue of professional ethics in the training process of (future) professionals in Portuguese higher education institutions and the appreciation of professional ethics in the exercise of professional activity with its connection with code of conduct and professional deontology. The theoretical-conceptual reference framework comes from heuristic literature research, which was analyzed hermeneutically in order to substantiate our purpose and respective objectives. We intend to value professional ethics in university training by using an empirical part of a quantitative methodology study (descriptive, transversal, explanatory), to determine what are the characteristics/attitudes 'Being a Good Professional' referred to by active professionals and students in training. Master (N=109 subjects), from the interior region of Portugal, having inserted these characteristics most cited as a percentage in a 'checklist' integrated into the 5 skills that the literature indicates for the profession: cognitive/scientific, technical-organizational, affective-emotional, social , ethics. The results expressed that the subjects have more 'Technical-organizational' (29.4) and 'ethical' (23.9%) and scientific (21%) skills, due to the requirement of exercising and profile of their own profession (responsibility and principles deontological), to the detriment of other skills less valued by them, which is partly contrary to other studies. Therefore, higher education institutions must introduce professional ethics subjects into their study plans, ensuring good ethical conduct for future professionals to be 'expert' and act ethically well in their future professional activity in organizations/companies and responding to the demands of society. CeiED of Lusophony University of Humanities and Technologies);Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco/Portugal;info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The development of a prototype solution for collecting information on cycling and hiking trail users
Hiking and cycling have gained popularity as ways of promoting well-being and physical activity. This has not gone unnoticed by Portuguese authorities, who have invested in infrastructure to support these activities and to boost sustainable and nature-based tourism. However, the lack of reliable data on the use of these infrastructures prevents us from recording a endance rates and the most frequent types of users. This information is important for the authorities responsible for managing, maintaining, promoting and using these infrastructures. In this sense, this study builds on a previous study by the same authors which identified computer vision as a suitable technology to identify and count different types of users of cycling and hiking routes. The performance tests carried out led to the conclusion that the YOLOv3-Tiny convolutional neural network has great potential for solving this problem. Based on this result, this paper describes the proposal and implementation of a prototype demonstrator. It is based on a Raspberry Pi 4 platform with YOLOv3-Tiny, which is responsible for detecting and classifying user types. An application available on users’ smartphones implements the concept of opportunistic networks, allowing information to be collected over time, in scenarios where there is no end-to-end connectivity. This aggregated information can then be consulted on an online platform. The prototype was subjected to validation and functional tests and proved to be a viable low-cost solution.FCT/MCTES through national funds and, where applicable, co-funded by EU funds under the project UIDB/50008/2020.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Comparative analysis of Multicriteria Decision‐Making methods for bus washing process selection: a case study
Water is at the core of sustainable development, and its use for human activities, including vehicle washing, should be done in a sustainable way. There are several technical solutions for washing buses offering different performances, making it difficult to choose the one that best meets the requirements of each specific case. The literature on the topic hardly analyzes the choice of the best technical solution for washing buses and does not apply and compare the results of different multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods for the problem. The unique information available is from the different suppliers in the market. Whereby, this work intends to give a technical-scientific contribution to fulfill this gaps. Therefore, the main objectives of this work are (1) to select the best sustainable technical solutions for washing buses depending on the specific conditions for a case study and (2) to analyze how different multicriteria decision-making methods behave in the selection process. To achieve these objectives, the problem was approached as a case study in a public transport company in Portugal and the methodology followed the next steps: started with the identification of the different types of commercial technical solutions for washing buses; the company’s experts selected four main criteria: water consumption, operating costs, quality of washing, and time spent; the criteria weights were determined using the fuzzy-AHP method; then four representative MCDM methods were selected, namely, AHP, ELECTRE, TOPSIS, and SMART; the ranks obtained for the four methods were compared; and a sensitivity analysis was performed. Considering the input data for the criteria and their weights, the results for all the methods showed that the best and the worst solution was the same, mobile portico with a brush and porticoes with three brushes, respectively. Furthermore, the results of the sensitivity analysis performed with disturbances for the weights of each criterion presented that the results are slightly affected and the similarity in rankings for the four MCDM methods was validated by Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (rs) and Kendall’s coefficient of concordance (W). Considering these results, the SMART method, the less complex one, showed no difference from the others. For that reason, simple methods, such as SMART, in line with other works in the literature perform well in most cases. As a final remark of this work, it can be said that the methodology employed in this project can also be deemed applicable to other similar companies seeking technical solutions for bus or truck washing. Furthermore, the application of the SMART method, the less complex one and the most understandable for people, showed no difference from the others, being able to be applied in similar situations. This work was financed by national funds through the Portuguese funding agency, FCT, Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, within project LA/P/0063/2020info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
objetivo importante no contexto do desenvolvimento sustentável. A espécie Dianthus
Contudo, as sementes desta espécie apresentam elevada dormência.
As duas
a 50 mM (T5).
As percentagens
Abstract: The introduction of spontaneous flora species into the urban landscape is an
important objective in the context of sustainable development. The species Dianthus
lusitanus is an Ibero-North African endemism, of the chamaephyte type, belonging to the
Caryophyllaceae family and occurring in locations with full sun exposure and in sandy
and acidic soils. However, the seeds of this species exhibit high dormancy. With the aim
of developing a germination protocol for D. lusitanus, the effect of two seed conservation methods and different treatments with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on seed germination
percentage was studied. The two seed conservation methods were as follows: i) cold
storage at 6°C for three months (lot A) and ii) storage at room temperature (lot B). Seeds
from both conservation methods (lots A and B) were subjected to five germination
treatments: i) watering with sterilized water (T1, control); ii) immersion of seeds in 1%
H2O2 solution for 30 minutes (T2); iii) immersion of seeds in 3% H2O2 solution for 30
minutes (T3); iv) immersion of seeds in 1% H2O2 solution for a period of 15 hours
(overnight) (T4); and v) periodic watering with 50 mM H2O2 solution (T5). For each
treatment, 90 seeds were studied, with three repetitions of 30 seeds, in a randomized
complete block design trial. The seeds were incubated at alternate temperatures of
25/22°C (day/night) and with a photoperiod of 16/8h. The germination percentage was
quantified after a period of 20 days. The data obtained were subjected to analysis of
variance (ANOVA), and the Tukey post-hoc test was used. The results showed that the
interaction effect between seed storage temperature and H2O2 treatment was not
statistically significant. Significant statistical differences were recorded between the two
seed conservation methods and among germination treatments. Seeds stored in cold at
6°C showed higher germination percentages compared to seeds stored at room
temperature. The lowest germination percentages were recorded for treatments T1 and
T5 (11.1% and 22.2%, respectively). The highest germination percentage (83%) was
observed for treatment T4. The development of a protocol to increase the germination
rate of D. lusitanus seeds allows for obtaining plants for ornamental purposes and also
has practical application in biodiversity conservation and re-vegetation of degraded
areas. The results obtained can contribute to the promotion of sustainability and

The Influence of futsal players’ initial physical condition on the occurrence of injuries
Although there are some studies that have linked fitness parameters and sports injuries, the literature remains controversial. The aim of the study was to prospectively analyze the influence of initial physical condition parameters on the development of injury in the first three months of the sports season in futsal players. A total of 68 players (24.26±4.63 years old) were assessed before the start of the sports season in relation to certain physical condition parameters, such as body composition (bioimpedance), lower limb power (countermovement jump, CMJ) and muscle strength (isokinetic dynamometer). The injured players showed significantly worse initial performance in the CMJ compared to the uninjured players (p<0.001). There were no significant differences between groups in body composition and muscle strength. Lower power values were associated with a higher risk of injury in the first few months of the sports season (OR=0.92; 95% CI=0.88-0.99). Muscle power was an independent predictor of injury in the first few months of the sports season in futsal players, indicating that improving players' physical condition could help reduce the number of injuries.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
