O design de produtos de uso cotidiano e memórias de longo prazo : a influência da cor na resposta emocional e na usabilidade percebida
Colour is an important component of product design and can influence usage interaction. This study aimed to study the influence of the colour of everyday products on the emotional response and perceived usability of senior adult females. Thirty women between 60 and 80 years old participated, who evaluated clay sausage roaster in three different colours, based on two protocols: Emotional Response Cards (ERC) and Perceived Usability Cards (PUC). The product in the “Terracotta” colour was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) better evaluated (emotional response and perceived usability) than the products in the other colours (“green” and “grey”). The colour “Terracotta” was decisive in confirming that the memory factor of long-term experiences contributed to the results achieved. The application of colours in the design ofproducts aimed at older users must consider long-termexperiences and be treated as an inclusivity factorResumo: Cor é um importante componente do design de produto, podendo influenciar na interação de uso. Using analytic hierarchy process to assess beekeeping suitability in Portuguese controlled areas : a first approach
The authors are grateful to the experts for participating in the online survey and contributing to the criteria ranking process: Beekeepers Association of the Natural Park of Montesinho (AAPNM); Beekeepers Association of the International Tejo Natural Park (Meltagus); Beekeepers Association in the northeast of Alentejo (Apilegre), and FNAP.Beekeeping management is greatly influenced by spatial factors (e.g., land use/land cover, roads, or electrical energy networks), so GIS are a powerful tool to overlap and relate a variety of spa- tial data levels and, consequently, a very useful tool for beekeeping activity planning. This study was developed within the intervention area of three controlled zones managed by Portuguese Beekeepers Associations. The methodology, based on multi-criteria decision analysis, integrates several criteria, such as hydrographic networks, road networks, soil occupation, solar radiation, and electromagnetic radiation sources. These criteria were proposed and evaluated through online questionnaires carried out with beekeepers. Concerning the selected criteria and the respective geographical data, the most relevant were land use/land cover and water availability, with a significance of 44% and 24%, respectively. The beekeeping suitability map enabled us to evaluate the degree of compliance for the actual location of apiaries, with 60% of the apiaries being installed in high potential areas. In the context of beekeeping planning, the potential of the techniques applied seems to be an important tool for optimizing the location of apiaries and the profitability of beekeeping.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Fire risk analysis: A proposal for historic buildings in Brazil
Fire risk analysis is increasingly being applied to buildings as a tool for managing the risk of a fire event, and the extent of its consequences. However, such methods give different results depending on the fire code under which the building was designed, which can compromise the effectiveness of this type of analysis. Given that regulatory requirements for fire safety differ from place to place, methodologies focused on solely one legislation may not be applicable to buildings constructed under other legislation. This paper presents a proposal for a fire risk analysis methodology based on established parameters, independent of local legislation requirements. The method proposed in this article is called Cálculo Escalonar de Perigo de Incêndio — CEPI (Scalar Calculation of Fire Hazard). The aim is to make a free method, available to fire safety professionals; and to provide a practical tool for measuring fire safety in Brazilian heritage buildings.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Using smart traffic lights to reduce CO2 emissions and improve traffic flow at intersections: simulation of an intersection in a small Portuguese city
Reducing CO2 emissions is currently a key policy in most developed countries. In this article, we evaluate whether smart traffic lights can have a relevant role in reducing CO2 emissions in small cities, considering their specific traffic profiles. The research method is a quantitative modelling approach tested by computational simulation. We propose a novel microscopic traffic simulation framework, designed to simulate realistic vehicle kinematics and driver behaviour, and accurately estimate CO2 emissions. We also propose and evaluate a routing algorithm for smart traffic lights, specially designed to optimize CO2 emissions at intersections. The simulations reveal that deploying smart traffic lights at a single intersection can reduce CO2 emissions by 32% to 40% in the vicinity of the intersection, depending on the traffic density. The simulations show other advantages for drivers: an increase in average speed of 60% to 101% and a reduction in waiting time of 53% to 95%. These findings can be useful for city-level decision makers who wish to adopt smart technologies to improve traffic flows and reduce CO2 emissions. This work also demonstrates that the simulator can play an important role as a tool to study the impact of smart traffic lights and foster the improvement in smart routing algorithms to reduce CO2 emissions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This article seeks to argue about the contributions of the area of knowledge and production of Computational Art to the development of residential architecture projects. The goal is to identify creative design strategies capable of contributing to spatial speculation. Among the possible contributions, emphasis is placed on the duet structure and the contingent quality present in part of the Computational Art production, with a focus on interactivity. Methodologically, the theory was corroborated by a literature review, and presentation of two applications in the initial stage of development, designed to assist in the initial stages of residential projects. The applications have Artificial Intelligence algorithms that actively participate in generating possibilities, and the architect interacts with these systems via active and reactive participation. The result of the duet has computational influence and human agency. From this work structure, a possible increase in the architect's creativity can be observed, as these programs encourage him to think, in a partnership relationship, as would happen in a duet between architecs.
Walking in their shoes: an ecological momentary assessment of physical activity and sedentary behaviors among urban and rural older adults
This study examines patterns of physical activity and sedentary behavior in individuals aged 65 years and older in the Beira Baixa region of Portugal with the aim of identifying differences between rural and urban settings. We analyzed data from 40 partici-pants, including 19 rural residents (mean age = 74.7 years, SD = 8.5 years) and 21 urban residents (mean age = 70.1 years, SD = 5.2 years), using a retrospective cross-sectional design complemented by an ecological momentary assessment to capture real-time behav-ior. The thematic analysis revealed that both cohorts were predominantly sedentary, especially in terms of television consumption. Physical activities were mainly limited to tasks such as housework, gardening and occasional walking, with minimal social interactions. Urban participants, in particular, reported meeting more frequently with family at home and in the neighborhood. Both groups pri-marily used indoor spaces and nearby streets for physical activity. Our findings highlight the urgent need for tailored weekend physical activity programs to improve sedentary lifestyles among older adults in both rural and urban areas. This study contributes to the liter-ature by highlighting the specific leisure-time preferences and activity patterns of older Portuguese adults, providing a basis for the development of adaptive, age-appropriate interventions.
Evaluation of the performance of the scientific repository in a higher education institution - A case study
The importance of disseminating knowledge in open access platforms and the recent introduction of the concept of open science have gained importance in the two first decades of the 21st century. Open access knowledge and information repositories are the most obvious example of this trend which is gaining more and more favor in the context of scientific research and publication. Institutional scientific repositories are invaluable tools for communicating and disseminating knowledge. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the evolution of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco Scientific Repository (RCIPCB) from its foundation in 2010 to the end of 2023. As this work was a follow-up, a comparison was made with the data collected and published in previous studies with the same goal carried out in 2012 and 2014 on the RCIPCB. A survey was drawn up and distributed by email to 220 teachers/researchers (FTEs) from the six higher education schools of the Castelo Branco Polytechnic Institute (IPCB). The data collected was processed using the IBM SPSS statistical software. There were 38% of valid responses. The majority of respondents were: over 40 years old (67%; p<0.05), male (57%), knew about the RCIPCB (99%; p<0.05), knew the Open Access Movement (78.3%; p<0.05) but 20% of them didn’t use the RCIPCB. Of the 80% of respondents who use the RCIPCB, 33% (p<0.05) reported using it to consult and download documents, 23% to deposit documents and 1.5% to check their own scientific production. However, on a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 is "Not at all important" and 5 is "Essential", 48% (p<0.05) gave the RCIPCB a rating of 5 and 31% a rating of 4. The majority of respondents indicated the "Visibility of the institution" (53%; p<0.05) and the "Reputation of the institution as a producer of science" (48%) as results of the repository's impact. Regarding to the concepts of Open Access and Open Science, 82% (p<0.05) of respondents said that they were complementary concepts, revealing some relative knowledge about the two concepts. Although more than 10 years have passed since the beginning of the RCIPCB, the results obtained show that there is a need to continue making efforts to inform, train and motivate IPCB teachers/researchers about the advantages and benefits of open access to knowledge and, consequently, the advantages to deposit the documents they produce and publish in the open access repository. In addition, the results indicate a lack of information on institutional, national and supranational open access policies, which also shows the need for information to reduce the discrepancy between the scientific production of the institution's teachers/researchers and its availability in open access RCIPCB.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
