Using computer vision to collect information on cycling and hiking trails users

    Get PDF
Hiking and cycling have become popular activities for promoting well-being and physical activity. Portugal has been investing in hiking and cycling trail infrastructures to boost sustainable tourism. However, the lack of reliable data on the use of these trails means that the times of greatest affluence or the type of user who makes the most use of them are not recorded. These data are of the utmost importance to the managing bodies, with which they can adjust their actions to improve the management, maintenance, promotion, and use of the infrastructures for which they are responsible. The aim of this work is to present a review study on projects, techniques, and methods that can be used to identify and count the different types of users on these trails. The most promising computer vision techniques are identified and described: YOLOv3-Tiny, MobileNet-SSD V2, and FasterRCNN with ResNet-50. Their performance is evaluated and compared. The results observed can be very useful for proposing future prototypes. The challenges, future directions, and research opportunities are also discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Abstract: The role of the human factor has become increasingly crucial for companies seeking to maintain a competitive edge over their competitors. Human resources (HR) are currently the main differentiating factor between organizations and are made up of four distinct generations of workers: Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y, and Generation Z. Therefore, this research aims to understand which Human Resource Management (HRM) practices are most important to each generation and to determine whether employees perceive the importance of these practices according to what happens in their organizations. The research sample consisted of 222 participants aged between 18 and 66; working full-time; with knowledge of Portuguese. A quantitative approach was adopted through the use of a questionnaire, consisting of an introduction to the study, HRM scales and sociodemographic characterization, which was distributed on social networks and emailed to various companies. The results show that the respondents attach significant value to HRM practices, however, they also express a predominant feeling that these practices are occasionally neglected in their respective workplaces. For Recruitment and Job Security, it was Generation Y that gave it the most importance, as well as training and career progression. On the other hand, although Boomers gave less importance to performance evaluation, they consider it to be very important, which is in line with the literature review of these individuals. For rewards, the importance has been growing with the younger generations, although all generations value rewards as a way of recognizing their hard work. Finally, for flexible working practices, it was the Boomers who gave the lowest score, which is in line with the literature review since this generational group tends to stay at work longer than the younger generations

    Get PDF
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the magnitude of the effect of combined exercise training on glucose metabolism markers, adipokines, and inflammatory cytokines in non-diabetic sedentary adults. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library electronic databases and reference lists of included studies were explored for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that included physically inactive adults and provided combined training interventions (aerobic plus resistance exercise). Effects on fasting glucose and insulin, Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), HbA1c, adiponectin, leptin, IL-6, TNF-α, and C-reactive protein (CRP) in exercise vs control groups were analyzed using random effects meta-analysis. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for Randomized Trials 2.0 (RoB 2) was used to assess the risk of bias. A total of 24 RCTs were included in the quantitative analysis. Combined exercise training significantly decrease fasting glucose (standardized mean difference, SMD: − 0.474, 95% CI [− 0.829, − 0.120], p = 0.009, 35 study arms), fasting insulin (SMD: − 1.024, 95% CI [− 1.502, − 0.545], p < 0.001, 27 study arms), HOMA-IR (SMD: − 0.946, 95% CI [− 1.450, − 0.442], p < 0.001, 23 study arms), TNF-α (SMD: − 0.972, 95% CI [− 1.361, − 0.582], p < 0.001, 10 study arms), and CRP (SMD: − 0.507, 95% CI [− 0.818, − 0.196], p = 0.001, 14 study arms). No significant effects were observed for HbA1c, adiponectin, leptin, and IL-6 levels. Random effects meta-regression models by age, sex, and intervention length were not able to explain any of the variation in the effect size of HOMA-IR. Findings from this systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that combined exercise training improves some glucose metabolism markers and inflammatory parameters in sedentary adults without diabetes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Cerebrocardiovascular diseases are a major global public health concern, significantly impacting morbidity, mortality, and posing substantial socio-economic challenges. In Cabo Verde, non-communicable diseases have become the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of risk factors for cerebrocardiovascular diseases and their association with cardiac electrical alterations in adults on Santiago Island, Cabo Verde. A cross-sectional population-based study using simple random sampling was conducted on individuals over 18 years of age. The sample size of 599 was based on Santiago Island’s 2021 population projection. Data collection occurred in October and November 2021, involving questionnaires on risk factors and cerebrocardiovascular diseases; blood pressure assessments; and capillary blood glucose measurements. The sample was predominantly female, with the 18–27 age group being the largest. Key risk factors included physical inactivity (65.1%), BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 (42.6%), hypertension (32.6%), and family history of cerebrocardiovascular diseases (19.9%). Other factors were alcoholism (14.4%), hypercholesterolemia (8.3%), smoking (7.3%), diabetes (4.5%), and hypertriglyceridemia (1.3%). Notably, 9.3% had no risk factors, 27.5% had one, 36.2% had two, and 26.9% had three or more. There is a high prevalence of risk factors for cerebrocardiovascular diseases on Santiago Island, particularly among females.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
Abstract: Futsal is a sport that has grown exponentially in recent years and this dissertation arises from the need to clarify the determining role of the physical condition of futsal players, due to the intense physical demands that are imposed during the game. It is also important to warn fitness professionals that initial data on body composition, power and muscle strength may be associated with the onset of injury in the first few months of the season, which could affect individual and collective sports performance. The main aim of this research was to find out about physical condition (body composition, lower limb power and isokinetic muscle strength), the typology and incidence of preseason injuries at the different competitive levels (elite, sub-elite and amateur) in futsal and to see if physical condition parameters can be predictors of injury development in the first three months of the sports season. Three studies with different methodological designs were conducted to meet this objective. In the first study, we began by checking the differences in physical condition between players at different competitive levels. To do this, we used a sample of 68 players, divided into three levels: elite, sub-elite and amateur. We found that there were no differences in body composition, but in power and muscle strength the elite players performed significantly better than the amateur players. In the second study, we looked at the type and incidence of injury at each competitive level during the specific preseason period. The results showed that the amateur level had the highest injury incidence rate, although the elite level had a higher number of injuries during the preseason. Regarding the type of injury, the majority occurred in the lower limbs, affecting the ankle, thigh, and knee. Ligament injuries were the most prevalent, the most common mechanism was non-traumatic, and a considerable proportion of the injuries were considered moderate. In the third study, we looked at whether physical condition parameters could be predictors of injury in the first few months of the sports season. The sample included twenty-one players with injuries and forty-seven without. The results show that of the parameters studied, only lower limb power was considered a predictor of an 8% reduction in the likelihood of injury. This master’s dissertation allows us to deepen our knowledge about the importance of physical fitness in futsal players and provides a starting point with important data for sports and health professionals, identifying injuries at different competitive levels, and this makes it possible to develop appropriate prevention programs for the sport, with the aim of optimizing the futsal player's sports performance

Study of body composition and motor skills of futsal athletes of different competitive levels

    Get PDF
This study aimed to verify whether there are differences in the body composition, functionality, lower-limb power, agility, and cardiorespiratory capacity in futsal players, comparing futsal athletes by competitive level. The athletes (N = 84) were divided into three groups: group Elite (N = 29), group Sub-Elite (N = 29), and group Non-Elite (N = 26). Anthropometric variables were analyzed through a bioimpedance scale (Inbody 270), and functionality was analyzed through a functional movement screen battery. The power of the lower limbs was tested with the Abalakov jump, the agility with the zigzag agility test, and the cardiorespiratory capacity through the futsal intermittent endurance test. Anthropometric data from futsal athletes revealed a homogeneity in relation to the variables analyzed, regardless of the level of competition in which they operate. In performance variables, the power of the members and functionality was considered a discriminating factor of the level of competitiveness of the athletes, with the Elite group athletes presenting the best values. We concluded that there were no differences in relation to the body composition of the athletes. However, the athletes of higher levels, as a rule, present better performances in physiological aspects, results that can be explained by the fact that there is a better periodization in terms of training, with more intense loads and more complex competitive calendars, thus resulting in a greater specialization of these athletes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Dynamics of training and competition demands in top-class male rink hockey : a case study of a rink hockey European Championship

    Get PDF
This study aimed to investigate the training load through external and internal load dynamics across the preparation and competition of a top-level national team during a Rink Hockey European Championship. A non-experimental descriptive method was developed. A two-way mixed design ANOVA and a Spearman correlation test were used to compare and understand the relationship between players’ external and internal load across microcycles during training sessions and competitive matches. Results revealed significantly higher values between training match day −3 to training match day −1 for player load (p ≤ 0.05), distance covered, and high-speed skating (p ≤ 0.001). Competition weeks exposed significantly higher values in comparison with training weeks. Interestingly, during competition, high impacts (p ≤ 0.001, r = 0.64) and decelerations (p ≤ 0.001, r = 0.43) had a greater influence on players’ session RPE than in training weeks. Different external and internal load dynamics were observed in the competition and training weeks, with high impacts and decelerations appearing to create a physiological impact on players, but the same does not occur in the training sessions. Results highlight the need to understand the competitive dynamics of each sport and the use of the most appropriate metrics to monitor the preparation process.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Land evaluation of suitability for the practice of foot orienteering using a spatial multicriteria method. A case study in the central eastern region of continental Portugal

    Get PDF
Publicação integrada II Congresso Internacional de Atividade Física (International Congress of Physical Activity) - (proceedings)Orienteering is a sport in which the orienteer completes a course of control points in the shortest possible time, aided only by a map and compass, involving the choice of itineraries, through reading and interpreting the map and its relationship with the terrain. The most important factors for selecting areas for orienteering are difficult and challenging terrain that enables good course setting. Finding a suitable area for foot orienteering involves multiple criteria. The main features that provide the athlete greater opportunities for testing navigation skills are, among others, a detailed representation of the terrain, containing rich landforms, and its cover, since foot orienteering is a sport organized in forests or natural areas. Based on these principles, this study aims to assess the suitability of the Central Eastern Region of Continental Portugal for the practice of Foot Orienteering. The suitable areas and their constraints were identified based on integrating a set of criteria using multicriteria spatial analysis tools in a GIS environment. For this purpose, the following descriptors were integrated: land cover, slope, slope variation, Topographic Position Index (TPI), and aspect variation. The criteria were classified into four levels of suitability, calculated by applying the Hierarchical Analytical Process. Based on the results obtained by the proposed methodology, we concluded that 52.5% of the study area presents high suitability for foot orienteering at a competitive level. That is a notable potential resource for the advancement of the sport, and for further refinement of the presented methodology based on additional data and criteria.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
