Vulnerability in children with celiac disease: Findings from a scoping review
Background: The scientific literature highlights that children diagnosed with celiac disease (CD) are at a heightened risk of experiencing physical, psychological, and social challenges, impacting their overall healthy childhood development. However, there remains a lack of a clear understanding regarding the factors that contribute to this vulnerability. The purpose of this study is to analyze and map the evidence on the sociopsychosomatic vulnerability of these children and identify gaps in this topic. (2) Methods: Following Joanna Briggs Institute's guidelines for scoping reviews, we executed a detailed search of key electronic databases and explored the grey literature to capture a broad spectrum of studies. Our focus was on identifying research that looked into the multiple dimensions of vulnerability-physical, psychological, and social-in children with CD. We included a diverse range of study designs as well as systematic reviews, ensuring a comprehensive analysis. The selection process was stringent, utilizing clearly defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. (3) Results: We identified 61 studies that met our inclusion criteria. The review highlighted significant adverse health outcomes in children with CD and elucidated various individual and environmental determinants that influenced these vulnerabilities. It also underscored the lack of assessment tools to evaluate the risk of health problems in this population. (4) Conclusions: The findings underscore a critical need for further research to deepen our understanding of the vulnerabilities associated with CD in children. Developing targeted assessment tools will be crucial in stratifying health risks and enhancing care strategies for this vulnerable population
Spiritual distress, hopelessness, and depression in palliative care: Simultaneous concept analysis
Spiritual distress, hopelessness, and depression are concepts that are often used in palliative care. A simultaneous concept analysis (SCA) of these concepts is needed to clarify the terminology used in palliative care. Therefore, the aim of this study is to conduct a SCA of spiritual distress, hopelessness, and depression in palliative care. A SCA was performed using the methodology of Haase’s model. A literature search was conducted in March 2020 and updated in April 2022 and April 2024. The search was performed on the following online databases: CINAHL with Full-Text, MEDLINE with Full-Text, MedicLatina, LILACS, SciELO, and PubMed. The search was achieved without restrictions on the date of publication. A total of 84 articles were included in this study. The results highlight that the three concepts are different but also share some overlapping points. Spiritual distress is embedded in the rupture of their spiritual/religious belief systems, a lack of meaning in life, and existential issues. Hopelessness is a sense of giving up and an inability to control and fix the patient’s situation. Finally, depression is a state of sadness with a multi-impaired situation. In conclusion, refining the three concepts in palliative care is essential since it promotes clarification and enhances knowledge development towards intervention
Comparative study of coagulation dynamics: cardoon flower extract vs. chymosin
Milk coagulants play a crucial role in defining curd characteristics. The objective of this study was to compare the coagulation dynamics of two commonly used coagulants in cheesemaking: cardoon flower extract (Cynara cardunculus L.) and commercial chymosin, using sheep milk from four different origins in the Baixo Alentejo region of Portugal, as the substrate. Milk composition was determined using the MilkoScan 133B, while the milk-clotting time (MCT) was measured following ISO 23058/IDF 199:2006 guidelines with slight modifications and coagulation kinetics, and technological properties were evaluated using the Optigraph apparatus. The results demonstrate that the type of coagulant impacts the coagulation properties of sheep milk. Pearson’s correlation analysis indicated that milk samples with higher protein content exhibited longer coagulation times but resulted in firmer curds. On the other hand, the use of cardoon flower extract introduced greater variability compared to chymosin, with a delayed onset of coagulation, reduced curd firmness, and increased variability in enzymatic kinetics. These results suggest that cardoon extract, while traditional, introduces greater heterogeneity in curd formation compared to the more consistent action of chymosin
A pedagogia da aventura enquanto modelo pedagógico em crescimento na atividade física
The relevance of pedagogical models in physical activity has increased in recent decades. These are the structures in which teachers can organize the different elements involved in the teaching-learning process to achieve the expected learning results. Among the various existing pedagogical models, we can distinguish between those with a more consolidated trajectory and the so-called emerging models that seek new teaching-learning paradigms centered above all on active learning. Among the emerging models, we find Adventure Pedagogy (AP), which is based on the models of education through adventure (an approach centered on challenge and adventure as an essential component of activities) and Outdoor Education, which is based on activities in the natural environment. In this way, Adventure Pedagogy seeks, through the challenge and possibilities offered by the natural environment, to contribute to humanizing participants through personal and social development, while promoting the development of specific technical skills for physical activities in the natural environment. This article describes the current relevance of the Adventure Pedagogy model, its key components and its possibilities as an emerging model in the search for the integral development of participants in physical sports activities
Psychotherapeutic interventions for depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults: A systematic review with meta-znalysis
The global ageing population faces rising depression rates due to social, economic, and health changes. Depression in older adults, often linked to isolation and health issues, requires comprehensive care. Psychotherapeutic interventions could be effective in reducing symptoms, offering personalized and holistic support. Particularly low-threshold interventions, such as those offered in community-dwelling older adults, which older adults can easily access and which may reduce stigma, promise to close the treatment gap. This review examines community-based psychotherapeutic interventions for older adults with depression. Methods: This review investigates psychotherapeutic interventions for reducing depressive symptoms in older adults in a community setting. RCTs were assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute tools. The following databases were searched: CINAHL Plus with Full Text, MedicLatina, MEDLINE with Full Text, and the Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection. Results: A meta-analysis of 13 studies with 1528 participants showed a medium, significant pooled effect size at post-intervention (Hedges’ g = −0.36, p < 0.001) and substantial heterogeneity. Follow-up analysis of studies indicated a small, non-significant effect (Hedges’ g = −0.17, p = 0.27). Group interventions, particularly the “reminiscence protocol”, had the largest significant effect. Discussion: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that in community-dwelling older adults’ group psychotherapeutic interventions, particularly the “reminiscence protocol” and “modified behavioral activation treatment” are most effective for reducing depressive symptoms. Individual psychotherapeutic interventions like “prevention of suicide in primary care elderly” and “behavioral activation” also show effectiveness, with group psychotherapeutic interventions being generally more effective than when these treatments are offered in individual psychotherapeutic interventions. Conclusion: Group and individual psychotherapeutic interventions reduce depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults, with group psychotherapeutic interventions being more effective
Modeling and optimization of atmospheric CO2 capture for neutralization of high alkaline wastewaters using response surface methodology
Lab-scale stirrer bubble and lab-scale stepped continuous flow capillary columns were developed to neutralize lime precipitation treated slaughterhouse wastewater (SWW) and recover the volatilized ammonia, using atmospheric CO2. These experiments were carried out using central composite design based on the response surface methodology. The carbonation process occurred in both processes. For the bubbling process, numerical optimization indicated a final pH of 8 with calcium and ammonium nitrogen removals of 76.0 and 66.2%, respectively, applying 21 h, air flow rate at 65 L h 1, the stirring speed at 52 rpm, and SWW volume at 178 mL. It was also observed that increasing the air flow rate can avoid the stirring step. For the capillary process, a pH of 8.2 and calcium and ammonium nitrogen removals of 81.0 and 57.5% were achieved, applying a SWW flow rate at 1.2 mL min 1, air flow rate at 90 L h 1, and capillary area at 700 cm2. Under optimal conditions, the flow capillary column was able to neutralize different SWW volumes, 178–478 mL, without significant differences in the collected samples, with the operation time varying between 4.48 and 10.20 h, respectively
Accidents in electrical transformation stations
12th International Zeugma Congress on Scientific Research, 2-4, 2024 / Gaziantep, TurkiyeThe work of electricians who work in contact with the power electrical system is characterized by the presence ofrelevant physical and mental demands. Ensuring the continuity of the electricity supply service is, nowadays, one of the most principal factors for its distributors and consumers, which is why ef:forts are increasingly being sought to promote, apply, and develop techniques and materials to optimize live line work, to minimize the impact of interventions in the electrical, transport and distribution grid networks. However, nothing should override the safety ofworkers, as work plays a central role in the lives of these operators, and regardless of the importance of any organization’s objectives, they have a legal and moral obligation to provide safe and healthy working environments to achieve its objectives
