Promoting deep learning through a concept map-building collaborative activity in an introductory programming course

    Get PDF
5th International Computer Programming Education Conference (ICPEC 2024).Programming courses focus heavily on problem-solving and coding practice. However, students also face numerous interrelated concepts that should be given more attention to foster more effective and comprehensive learning. Often, students only get an incomplete knowledge of those concepts and their relations as no adequate reflection is promoted or even seen as necessary. The result is a superficial surface learning about essential programming concepts and their relations. This experience report presents a learning activity to promote deep learning of concepts and their relations. The activity challenges students to specify relations between concepts. Students search definitions for a given set of concepts and define relations between those concepts in textual form. To that end, they use a freely available tool that produces a graph from textual descriptions. This tool dramatically simplifies and speeds up the creation of readable graphical representations. Although many different courses can take advantage of the presented activity, we present the activity’s application to an introductory object-oriented programming course. We also present and discuss the student’s feedback, which was highly positive. In the end, we provide recommendations, including possible variations. These can help educators to effectively foster active learning of concepts and their relations in their classrooms

Analysis of determining factors in the thermal comfort of university students. A comparative study between Spain and Portugal

    Get PDF
The quality of the indoor thermal environment is essential because of its impact on the energy efficiency of buildings and on the health and well-being of those who occupy them. This is particularly important in educational buildings because of the direct impact on student performance. Various factors, such as natural ventilation, have become particularly relevant since COVID-19. Although this measure is no longer mandatory, its usefulness has been proven, and it is therefore interesting to evaluate it to understand its impact on thermal comfort in classrooms. In addition to ventilation, other aspects such as clothing, gender and habits can also influence the thermal perception of the occupants. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of these factors on thermal comfort in university buildings in Spain and Portugal through a campaign of measurements and questionnaires. The results showed that, according to CO2 concentrations, natural ventilation strategies have been maintained more in Spain than in Portugal. Also, these protocols did not have a negative effect on the thermal comfort of the occupants. On the other hand, there were significant differences between the student's responses in the two countries. In fact, Portuguese students showed warmer preferences (Tn=26.40°C) than Spanish students (Tn=24.70°C). Finally, clothing habits were a crucial factor in the perception of thermal comfort, with differences by country and by gender

    No full text
One of the simplest and most effective methods for promoting physical activity is the development and implementation of community-based physical activity interventions and initiatives. Good practices are interventions or strategies that, based on scientific evidence and/or practical experience, demonstrate positive results in achieving the desired objectives. In the context of promoting physical activity in the elderly, good practices refer to programs, approaches or actions that have shown effectiveness in improving the health and well-being of this population (WHO, 2002; JANPA, 2015). We can admit that good practices are characteristics of initiatives, interventions or community programs, implemented in a real-life context and that are appropriate to their context of application, accepted by the target population and partners, effective, that produce good, efficient, sustainable, replicable, ethical and fair (CHRODIS, 2015; JANPA, 2015). In the context of promoting physical activity in the elderly, good practices refer to programs, approaches or actions that have shown effectiveness in improving the health and well-being of this population. This study was designed with the objective of evaluate community interventions that promote physical activity in a local/municipal context in Baixo Alentejo, Portuga

Medication adherence in adults with chronic diseases in primary healthcare: A quality improvement project

    No full text
    (1) Background: Medication adherence is influenced by a variety of intricate factors, presenting hurdles for nurses working to improve it among adults with chronic conditions. Pinpointing the reasons for non-adherence is crucial for customizing interventions. The objective of this quality improvement project was to improve medication adherence among adults with chronic diseases in primary healthcare by promoting evidence-based practices, identifying barriers and facilitators to compliance, and developing strategies to ensure optimal adherence through engaging the nursing team, enhancing knowledge, and evaluating the effectiveness of the implemented strategies. (2) Methods: This study was a quality improvement project that utilized the JBI Evidence Implementation framework, the Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System, and the Getting Research into Practice audit tool across three phases: (i) forming a project team and conducting a baseline audit, (ii) offering feedback via the GRiP tool, and (iii) conducting a follow-up audit to assess best practice outcomes. The study was conducted between September 2021 and March 2022 in the community care unit of Algarve Regional Health Administration, targeting adults with chronic illnesses. (3) Results: A total of 148 individuals were audited, including 8 nurses, 70 baseline patients, and 70 post-implementation patients. Initial compliance with key best practices was low, with several criteria at 0% compliance at baseline. Post-intervention, we observed significant improvements; compliance with key best practices improved dramatically, with many reaching 100%. Notable improvements included enhanced patient education on medication management, regular medication adherence assessments, and increased engagement of healthcare professionals in adherence activities. (4) Conclusions: This quality improvement project demonstrated that structured, evidence-based interventions could significantly enhance medication adherence among adults with chronic diseases. The success of the project highlights the potential of similar strategies to be applied broadly in primary healthcare settings to improve health outcomes

An analysis of methodological aspects in the practice of nautical activities in educational centers

    No full text
Currently, physical and sports activities in natural environments are viewed as valuable resources for combatting sedentary lifestyles, with water sports and related activities offering significant educational potential. However, these activities are not fully integrated into physical education programs, largely due to a lack of training in methodological approaches. This qualitative study interviewed ten stakeholders (including instructors, managers, and teachers from three countries) to analyze key methodological aspects necessary for effective implementation. The results revealed three main findings: (1) direct instruction emerged as the primary teaching approach, incorporating demonstrations and level-appropriate activities; (2) optimal learning occurs in small groups of 8–12 students per instructor; and (3) technical skill development should focus on sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. This study identified weather conditions as a key challenge, necessitating flexible planning. Based on these findings, this study provides practical guidelines for implementing water sports in educational settings, emphasizing the importance of structured teaching approaches, appropriate group sizing, and environmental considerations

The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Alentejo's Rural Tourism units and their communication: The case of TERs with Biosphere certification

    Get PDF
