BIM model to support O&M tasks

    Get PDF
: Technological evolution and BIM have changed the design development process in the construction industry. The operation and maintenance (O&M) phase requires building information throughout its service life, which was previously paper based, making it difficult to carry out maintenance activities. BIM assists in the management, storage, and digital sharing of information generated. However, only part of the information generated is required for the maintenance phase of the building. Although a subset of the IFC schema already exists to describe the data exchange between the BIM model and maintenance software, the data are generic and not well defined according to each the element source of maintenance (ESM). Therefore, through a literature review of existing studies on the use of BIM to support O&M processes, this paper aims to design an information flow to integrate maintenance information into the BIM model. The information is based on six main maintenance acts (inspection, cleaning, proactive measure, correction, replacement, and terms of use) and organized in an external sheet. The building will be divided into ESM according to its function in the building to facilitate the maintenance information flow between sheets and the BIM model.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
Quartz powder (QP) from mining exploration has increased, and valorisation solutions are sought. QP incorporation in structural concrete is an exciting strategy for the growth and sustainable development of the concrete industry, waste management and environmental protection. This work addresses the valorisation of QP from a Portuguese company on powder-type self-compacting concrete for architectural and structural purposes, combining the light colour of quartz with white cement. As such, QP was used as a partial cement replacement, acting as a filler on self-compacting white mortars (SCWM) and pastes (SCWP). Firstly, the QP was characterised by chemical, physical and morphological properties. Afterwards, SCWM with 10% of the white Portland cement with QP were produced and, with 10% cement replacement by limestone fillers, commercially available, for comparison purposes. The following engineering properties were evaluated, flowability and viscosity, electrical resistivity, porosity and mechanical strength. In equivalent pastes samples, the heat of hydration was accessed. Finally, an architectonic element prototype was produced using SCWM-QP, and colour and aesthetics were evaluated. All SCWM reached adequate deformability and viscosity for self-compaction. In the hardened state, compressive strength, electrical resistivity and water-permeable porosity presented similar results for mortars incorporating quartz powder and limestone fillers. The isothermal calorimetry in equivalent pastes revealed a slight desacceleration of hydration for SCWP incorporating QP. The major findings of this study confirm the feasibility of SCWM with QP, meeting the required performance while reducing resource depletion in the concrete industry and adding value to a by-product.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Optimization techniques for mortars with self-compacting characteristics through Central Composite Design

    Get PDF
The high demand for concrete in civil construction promotes investment by researchers and builders to find methodologies that improve performance, costs and reduced environmental degradation. What justifies the large consumption of concrete is the possibility of improving its characteristics according to use. Self compacting concrete offers a mixture with high flowability, compaction and good mechanical properties. Statistics tools can be used for better optimization of mixtures, such as the Design of Experiments (DoE). Therefore, the objective of this research was to optimize an experimental dataset of high strength self-compacting mortars using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for a Central Composite Design (CCD). The results showed a strong correlation between the D-Flow and T funnel response factors, when compared with CS14h and CS28d models. The input variable w/c was the most significant. Numerical optimization showed good accuracy and compliance for low cost and environmental impact, maintaining high performance in fresh and hardened properties.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
The paper is devoted to the line integral topic belonging to the section of vector calculus in Mathematical Analysis applied to the undergraduate Mechanical Engineering program. An efficient way of teaching line integrals is proposed and developed based on the elem entary work/force principles. By this way, the mathematical concept of the line integral is supposed to be learned in harmony with the elementary mechanics to appreciate its diversity and to set up the right idea about the scientific area covered by Mechanical Engineering and related academic and technical fields. In terms of practical training, the research also offers two new techniques of analytical calculus for line integrals con taining singularities and provides a new coherent engineering approach to deal with vec tor fields as integrands in line integrals

    Get PDF
Joining University is an important transition in the student's life that requires adaptation and can influence academic success or failure. When there are difficulties in adaptation, due to insecurity/uncertainties or due to the management of emotions of this new stage in the student's life, psychological disorders, including anxiety and stress, may develop. The fact that we are currently living in a situation of near post-pandemic conditions may also contribute to the development of anxiety and/or to the aggravation of existing ones. In an attempt to address this problem of anxiety management among university students, the project "Toolbox: University Student – Web-interactive Platform", a platform for learning anxiety management, emerges. The main objective of this research is to understand whether the use of the platform has proved effective in managing anxiety among university students. The sample consists of 31 students from the University of Madeira (UMa) and the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), aged between 19 and 47 years. The participants were divided into two groups: intervention group (n=17) and control group (n=13). The results show that the participants who were subjected to the intervention with the interactive platform showed improvements in their commitment to their studies and in their anxiety levels in general

Impact of Non-Saccharomyces Yeast Fermentation in Madeira Wine Chemical Composition

    Get PDF
Madeira wine is produced via spontaneous alcoholic fermentation arrested by ethanol addition. The increasing demand of the wine market has led to the need to standardize the winemak ing process. This study focuses on identifying the microbiota of indigenous yeasts present during Madeira wine fermentation and then evaluates the impact of selected indigenous non-Saccharomyces as pure starter culture (Hanseniaspora uvarum, Starmerella bacillaris, Pichia terricola, Pichia fermentans, and Pichia kluyveri) in the chemical and phenolic characterization of Madeira wine production. Re sults showed that the polyphenol content of the wines was influenced by yeast species, with higher levels found in wines produced by Pichia spp. (ranging from 356.85 to 367.68 mg GAE/L in total polyphenols and 50.52 to 51.50 mg/L in total individual polyphenols through HPLC methods). Antioxidant potential was higher in wines produced with Hanseniaspora uvarum (133.60 mg Trolox/L) and Starmerella bacillaris (137.61 mg Trolox/L). Additionally, Starmerella bacillaris stands out due to its sugar consumption during fermentation (the totality of fructose and 43% of glucose) and 15.80 g/L of total organic acids compared to 9.23 g/L (on average) for the other yeasts. This knowledge can be advantageous to standardizing the winemaking process and increasing the bioactive compounds, resulting in the production of high-quality wines.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
In Portugal, domestic violence has been receiving increasing attention from political powers, particularly at the level of public policies that prevent and combat the phenomenon. In the case of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), several regional and local strategies have been implemented to respond to domestic violence, focusing mainly on violence against women. This study aims to understand how public policies in RAM, regional and local, are effective in preventing and combating domestic violence against women. It is also intended to understand how these policies are configured as effective recommendations for changing/improving public policies and increasing awareness of this problem of all stakeholders. The methodology adopted for this investigation is the case study, having chosen to combine qualitative instruments, that is, semi-structured interviews and surveys and, subsequently, the documentary analysis. In this sense, 22 people were interviewed (eleven heads of municipalities, six of the victim support structures, five victims of domestic violence) and four entities of the Regional Network Against Domestic Violence. The news published between 2021 and 2022 in a regional newspaper, which contained the expression “domestic violence”, were also analyzed. This study shows that, despite the path taken and the achievements accomplished in RAM, especially since 2009, with the design and implementation of the First Regional Plan Against Domestic Violence (PRCVD), there is still a need to implement and/or improve social responses to prevent and combat domestic violence, both at regional and local levels. In this context, recommendations have been made to various sectors/entities with a view to preventing and combating this scourge that jeopardizes the dignity of the human person and life in society.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The vitality of “amecê” in the municipality of Machico (Madeira)

    Get PDF
Que signiªcação e usos continua a ter?: In two parts (the ªrst one, a contextualization, is general and a sec ond is a questionnaire with speciªc data), we intend to approach a form that is being less used in the 21st century, when it seems to have had great vitality in the Madeiran archipelago in the past. It is the word “amecê” that was currently heard in the island of Madeira in the past. It was attested in a family environment in the municipality of Machico, here under study, twenty-ªve years ago, in common uses in dialogue with the elderly, at a level of popular and colloquial language. What’s its etymology? What meaning and uses it continues to have?info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
