Novel Comparative Study for the Detection of COVID-19 Using CT Scan and Chest X-ray Images

    Get PDF
The number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases is constantly rising as the pandemic continues, with new variants constantly emerging. Therefore, to prevent the virus from spreading, coronavirus cases must be diagnosed as soon as possible. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on people’s health and the economy worldwide. For COVID-19 detection, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction testing is the benchmark. However, this test takes a long time and necessitates a lot of laboratory resources. A new trend is emerging to address these limitations regarding the use of machine learning and deep learning techniques for automatic analysis, as these can attain high diagnosis results, especially by using medical imaging techniques. However, a key question arises whether a chest computed tomography scan or chest X-ray can be used for COVID-19 detection. A total of 17,599 images were examined in this work to develop the models used to classify the occurrence of COVID-19 infection, while four different classifiers were studied. These are the convolutional neural network (proposed architecture (named, SCovNet) and Resnet18), support vector machine, and logistic regression. Out of all four models, the proposed SCoVNet architecture reached the best performance with an accuracy of almost 99% and 98% on chest computed tomography scan images and chest X-ray images, respectively.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
In this study, we aimed to investigate the circumstances under which preventive training influences the increase in lower limb strength (in terms of performance) and the reduction of injury risk. This investigation was based on the application of a battery of tests to soccer players throughout a sports season. The specific context of training for this sport requires effort to find strategies and methods to make the most of training time and space. In our view, the prevention of injuries and the enhancement of performance may be directly linked to these decisions. According to Oliveira (2016), injuries are classified as acute and chronic. Acute injuries occur immediately after a major microtrauma, manifesting early signs and symptoms, or even immediately in severe cases, where the inflammatory phase appears with its characteristic signs/symptoms. The most common chronic injuries include tendinopathies, bursitis, apophysitis, or enteropathies (injuries at the sites of musculotendinous structure insertions) and fatigue fractures. In the initial phase, we conducted a literature review related to the topic to frame and substantiate our study. Subsequently, we identified the variables to consider: the impact of the preventive program on reducing the number of injuries, the impact of the preventive program on increasing lower limb strength, and the number of injuries during the evaluation periods of the sports season and their relationship with the type of preventive program applied. The sample consisted of 67 players from the senior teams of Clube Sport Marítimo (Team A, B, and Under-23). The evaluations were conducted in the gym during training sessions. We used a questionnaire adapted from Morgado (2007), validated by consensus, to analyze the importance of developing lower limb strength and preventing injuries through the implementation of a preventive program during a sports season. The final version of the questionnaire consisted of 22 questions, with quick answers and multiple choice options, distributed across five sections. We assessed the normality of the study variables using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, were used to characterize the sample with respect to the study variables. The repeated measures ANOVA was employed to analyze differences between the three evaluation time points for the variables under study. To determine differences between the two groups at various time points, we used Mann-Whitney and T-Student tests with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 27.0). The results indicate an improvement in lower limb performance through the implementation of the strength plan. All evaluations showed an increase in performance between the first and last assessment moments. The number of injuries decreased from the previous season to the current season for the players who continued with the preventive program. The majority of players (93.75%) consider strength training as an important factor in injury prevention and performance enhancement in sports. 98.07% of players who underwent the training program reported an increase in performance during the sports season. The group that did not follow the individual strength plan experienced a higher number of injuries

Macroalgae are considered a valuable source of several compounds with nutritional, nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, and phar maceutical applications. They are also used for crop fertilization and biofortifcation by introducing important minerals into the soil essential for crop productivity. At the same time, however, they are known bio-accumulators of some heavy metals. In this work, we assessed the content of 7 minerals considered as heavy metals in 25 macroalgae samples, comprising 4 greens, 9 reds and 12 browns, from Madeira Archipelago, Portugal, for their potential use as blue bioeconomy products. These heavy metals included zinc (Zn) with concentrations that ranged from 1.95 – 242.65 mg kg−1 dw, nickel (Ni, 0.6 – 34.78 mg kg−1 dw), copper (Cu, 0.42 – 7.98 mg kg−1 dw), chromium (Cr, 0.47 – 45.74 mg kg−1 dw), cadmium (Cd, 0.1 – 2.58 mg kg−1 dw), lead (Pb, 0.05 – 2.79 mg kg−1 dw) and mercury (Hg, 0.03 – 8.49 µg kg−1 dw). We also analysed 22 samples of beach-cast macroalgae from Gran Canaria Island, Spain, collected from November 2016 to November 2019. The same heavy metals were assessed with their concentrations that ranged as follows: Zn (11.41 – 42.20 mg kg−1 dw), Ni (3.17 – 17.78 mg kg−1 dw), Cu (1.85 – 4.20 mg kg−1 dw), Cr (6.08 – 37.98 mg kg−1 dw), Cd (0.02 – 0.11 g kg−1 dw), Pb (0.16 –5.42 mg kg−1 dw) and Hg (3.59 – 31.00 µg kg−1 dw). These concentrations are all within the normal ranges reported in earlier studies in low industrialized areas, except for the brown algae Gongolaria abies-marina and Sargassum vulgare with high mean (±SD) Cd concentration (1.91±0.36 and 1.75±0.07 g kg−1 dw respectively). Our results suggest that most of the biomass prospected in these localities covered in the present study would be a viable source of materials for the development of a blue economy industry with emerging products following the European Union directives.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Evolving SPIDe Towards the Integration of Requirements Elicitation in Interaction Design

    Get PDF
Among the various interaction (re)design processes and approaches, SPIDe is a semio-participatory methodological process inspired by communication-centered design. However, the development of computational solutions is not limited to interaction design. Requirements elicitation is also an integral part of this process. Some SPIDe studies indicated that it is also possible to raise requirements through its application due to its participatory characteristics. This article presents an investigation on the feasibility of SPIDe when applied to requirements elic itation integrated with interaction design, presenting an exploratory case study. From the perspective of different experts, we explain the strengths and needs of SPIDe in supporting requirements elicitation integrated into inter action design. Data were collected through logbooks, semi-structured interviews, and the TAM questionnaire and then analyzed through thematic analysis. The results show that the SPIDe use for requirements elicitation integrated into the interaction design is feasible. Furthermore, they indicated that possible improvements in SPIDe could ben efit the development of the computational solutions considering a single application of SPIDe to obtain data for interaction design and requirements elicitation integrated.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A hyper-realistic journey into the abyss of contemporary Mexican society, which Luis Buñuel would inaugurate with the premiere of The Forgotten in 1950, where poverty, evil and a disturbance, very naturalistic strangeness intermingled. In this paper, a selection of uncomfortable and transgressive films by Amat Escalante and Carlos Reygadas will be analyzed, in which pathological realism predominates, through narratives close to the bitter and implausible. Feature films that exhibit repressed desires, violence, impunity, and corruption. Blemishes and obsessions that current Mexico unfortunately suffers, in which both authors express themselves in a portentous and critical way towards these plagues. Finally, productions that evoke a poetic and incisive look at the various problems of the North American country.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Background and Aim: The specificities of child welfare and protection systems have a major impact on professionals and, consequently, on the work with families. Clinical supervision is a strong ally in promoting the well-being and proficiency of professionals. Objective: The main purpose of this study was to conduct a literature review on the appropriateness of supervision models to the specificities of the context of welfare and protection of children and young people, considering the roles of supervision, the supervision models, and the challenges of the context. Method: A narrative review was conducted by searching for keywords, reading the abstracts of the articles found, and reading in full the articles that fit the defined theme. Articles on supervision and clinical supervision in social and child and youth promotion and protection contexts were analyzed. Results: A single-approach supervision model or eclectic models with divergent theoretical approaches that do not address the complexity of the family systems identified predominates. Conclusions: We advocate a model with an integrative reading frame but fundamentally supported by an eco-systemic view of child maltreatment and family functioning, which is aware of the institution's procedures and promotes effective support to the professional. Further studies should be conducted to evaluate the effective influence of supervision on the practice of professionals with families and to identify the characteristics of the models that make them effective in promotion and protection.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Delving into agri-food waste composition for antibacterial phytochemicals

    Get PDF
The overuse of antibiotics in the healthcare, veterinary, and agricultural industries has led to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), resulting in significant economic losses worldwide and a growing healthcare problem that urgently needs to be solved. Plants produce a variety of secondary metabolites, making them an area of interest in the search for new phytochemicals to cope with AMR. A great part of agri-food waste is of plant origin, constituting a promising source of valuable compounds with different bioactivities, including those against antimicrobial resistance. Many types of phytochemicals, such as carotenoids, tocopherols, glucosinolates, and phenolic compounds, are widely present in plant by-products, such as citrus peels, tomato waste, and wine pomace. Unveiling these and other bioactive compounds is therefore very relevant and could be an important and sustainable form of agri-food waste valorisation, adding profit for local economies and mitigating the negative impact of these wastes’ decomposition on the environment. This review will focus on the potential of agri-food waste from a plant origin as a source of phytochemicals with antibacterial activity for global health benefits against AMR.</jats:p

Evaluation of tropane alkaloids in teas and herbal infusions: effect of brewing time and temperature on atropine and scopolamine content

    Get PDF
Atropine and scopolamine belong to the tropane alkaloid (TA) family of natural toxins. They can contaminate teas and herbal teas and appear in infusions. Therefore, this study focused on analyzing atropine and scopolamine in 33 samples of tea and herbal tea infusions purchased in Spain and Portugal to determine the presence of these compounds in infusions brewed at 97 °C for 5 min. A rapid microextraction technique (µSPEed®) followed by high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS/MS) was used to analyze the selected TAs. The results showed that 64% of the analyzed samples were contaminated by one or both toxins. White and green teas were generally more contaminated than black and other herbal teas. Of the 21 contaminated samples, 15 had concentrations above the maximum limit for liquid herbal infusions (0.2 ng/mL) set by Commission Regulation (EU) 2021/1408. In addition, the effects of heating conditions (time and temperature) on atropine and scopolamine standards and naturally contaminated samples of white, green, and black teas were evaluated. The results showed that at the concentrations studied (0.2 and 4 ng/mL), there was no degradation in the standard solutions. Brewing with boiling water (decoction) for 5 and 10 min allowed for higher extraction of TAs from dry tea to infusion water.</jats:p
