Public perceptions, knowledge, responsibilities, and behavior intentions on marine litter: Identifying profiles of small oceanic islands inhabitants
Marine litter is a global threat, particularly on oceanic islands where the problem is exacerbated. Perceptions,
knowledge, awareness, and attitudes towards the theme are crucial in its mitigation and prevention. This study
assessed these points through a questionnaire to the inhabitants of a Portuguese archipelago. Data revealed that
people associate marine litter with plastic and its impacts and are well informed about its sources and pathways.
Yet, the degradation rates of marine items were frequently underestimated and the problem of marine litter was
attributed, among others, to littering, single-use products, and excessive packaging. Some individuals did not
consider themselves responsible for reducing marine litter, attributing responsibilities to third parties. The
youngest group, men, and students were the ones who reported less litter-reducing intentions and behaviors.
Distinct profiles were traced using the questionnaire’s answers, highlighting who needs marine litter literacy.
Individuals who do not consider marine litter a current threat and live in a community that does not care about
marine litter (profiles 1 and 2) were the groups that needed deeper intervention, due to their low perception and
understanding of the problem. Marine litter literacy, management, and governance measures are necessary so
that the public recognizes marine litter as a current threat, is worried about its impacts, avoids plastic use, and
choses re-useable products (profile 4). In the studied oceanic islands, results indicated marine litter is not fully
perceived by the public. A global and transformative shift in the way people are educated and behave towards
waste and pollution is required, thereby highlighting the importance of increasing public perceptions assessment
and marine litter literacy in the society.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
literacia do oceano.
No
Cetaceans play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of the ocean
ecosystem. It is of paramount importance for the public to grasp their behavioral patterns
and migratory habits, in order to foster awareness and promote effective preservation
practices for these magnificent species. Extensive efforts have been undertaken to gather
monitoring data on cetaceans, including the deployment of tagging devices. However, due
to the complexity of the collected data, it is seldom made accessible to the public,
particularly to those lacking expertise in the field. Nonetheless, this data represents a
powerful source of knowledge about these species and can serve as a catalyst for
enhancing ocean literacy.
Hence, the present research aims to develop a mobile application that facilitates the
establishment of empathic connections between users and the monitored cetaceans
along the coast of Madeira Island. To achieve this objective, an intricately designed and
implemented mobile application will be devised, offering users a diverse range of
cetacean-related information. Drawing on data acquired through the tagging devices, this
information will be presented in a captivating manner, leveraging mechanisms of empathy
and gamification, thereby ensuring sustained engagement of the public with cetacean
monitoring data.
The application was tested with twelve participants to evaluate the user’s experience.
The results obtained show that users had a positive experience and potential in the
application to foster a connection between users and cetaceans. However, in the short
context of this study, it was not possible to verify an increase in knowledge about these
species
Pathological Manifestations in Buildings with Reinforced Concrete Walls: Case Study in The City of João Pessoa - PB
This work focuses on the
evaluation of the pathological manifestations
presented in the constructive system of cast in- place concrete walls with the use of steel
formwork. The case study was carried out
in a condominium, located in the city of
João Pessoa/PB, composed of 208 housing
units distributed in 13 blocks, each of them
containing 16 apartments. The objective of
this article is to point out the pathological
manifestations reported by the users of
the buildings after the completion of the
construction and the possible failures in
the execution stage. The development of
this study consists basically of a mapping
of the pathologies through the occurrence
reports registered by the users who requested
technical assistance, where it could be
verified that, of the of all occurrences
recorded by the company, around 40% of
them are related to, or are from systems that
interface with concrete walls. In the next step,
an on-site inspection to identify the nature
and origin of the pathologies and diagnose
the situation found seeking a solution to
the problem. It can be concluded that the
adoption of alternative processes used by the
construction company can reduce or even
avoid pathologies interfacing with concrete
walls. Other measures such as the adoption
of curing processes and better maintenance
of steel formwork also appear as important
elements in mitigating the undesirable effects
caused by inadequate execution of concrete

Numerical Design and Optimisation of Self-Compacting High Early-Strength Cement-Based Mortars
The use of SCC in Europe began in the 1990s and was mainly promoted by the precast
industry. Precast companies generally prefer high early-strength concrete mixtures to accelerate
their production rate, reducing the demoulding time. From a materials science point of view,
self-compacting and high early-strength concrete mixes may be challenging because they present
contradicting mixture design requirements. For example, a low water/binder ratio (w/b) is key to
achieving high early strength. However, it may impact the self-compacting ability, which is very
sensitive to Vw/Vp. As such, the mixture design can be complex. The design of the experimental
approach is a powerful tool for designing, predicting, and optimising advanced cement-based
materials when several constituent materials are employed and multi-performance requirements
are targeted. The current work aimed at fitting models to mathematically describe the flow ability,
viscosity, and mechanical strength properties of high-performance self-compacting cement-based
mortars based on a central composite design. The statistical fitted models revealed that Vs/Vm
exhibited the strongest (negative) effect on the slump-flow diameter and T-funnel time. Vw/Vp
showed the most significant effect on mechanical strength. Models were then used for mortar
optimisation. The proposed optimal mixture represents the best compromise between self-compacting
ability—a flow diameter of 250 mm and funnel time equal to 10 s—and compressive strength higher
than 50 MPa at 24 h without any special curing treatment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Neste espaço proponho-me abordar a
Thinking about dance beyond form... that's another way of putting it: thinking
about dancers beyond the way they dance. In this space, I propose to approach
autobiography as a process of catharsis about experiences that oscillate between 1974
and 2023, during approximately half a century. Taking advantage of the moment I'm
going through, inspired by Walter Benjamin's journey, clearly evident in his work
Travelling Diaries (2022), in which we learn about the process of writing in exile,
between and during wars, through texts that recount the experiences of that period and
where there was no shortage of conversations with Bertolt Brecht, I set out to reflect.
Moving on to practice in the "studio" was just another step driven by the desire to draw
a life through movement, using video as a record. This procedure, which differs from a
written record due to the possibility of immediately capturing the moving image, gives us
a different look and, with it, a new vision of the work in progress. This factor has a
different value and impact on the actor (the one who dances, records the process, and
then observes and analyses it) than a written record, however complete it may be. I was
accompanied in this process by two people with no training in dance, who made paper
records after each session that allowed me to later analyse the results of the experience
in a comparative way. This text is about this work, its writing, and its results.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Simultaneous microextraction of pesticides from wastewater using optimized μSPEed and μQuEChERS techniques for food contamination analysis
Food contamination with pesticides poses significant risks to consumer safety and undermines
confidence in food supply chains. Detecting pesticides in food samples is a challenging task that
requires efficient extraction techniques. This study aims to compare and validate two micro extraction techniques, μSPEed and μQuEChERS-dSPE, for the simultaneous extraction of eight
pesticides (paraquat, thiabendazole, asulam, picloram, ametryn, atrazine, linuron, and cymox anil) from wastewater samples. A good analytical performance was obtained for both method ologies, with selectivity, linearity in the range 0.5–150 mg L− 1 with coefficients of determination
up to 0.9979, limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) ranging from 0.02 to
0.05 mg L− 1 and from 0.06 to 0.17 mg L− 1
, respectively, precision below 14.7 mg L− 1
, and re coveries from wastewater samples in the range of 66.1–99.9%. The developed methodologies are
simpler, faster, and require less sample and solvent volumes than conventional methodologies,
having a lower impact on the environment. Nevertheless, the μSPEed approach was found to be
more efficient, easier to perform, and with a higher greener profile. This study highlights the
potential of microextraction techniques for the analysis of pesticide residues in food and envi ronmental samples. Overall, it presents a fast and efficient method for the analysis of pesticides in
wastewater samples, which can be useful for monitoring and controlling pesticide contamination

Interactive geodesic structures for attracting wider audience to marine concerns
Recent surveys indicate that there is a greater emotional disconnect between the
European population and Europe’s aquatic environments [1]. Although a wider
audience recognizes anthropogenic issues (i.e. litter pollution, overfishing, noise
pollution, etc) where most people can feel connected to nature, however, they
do not exhibit pro-environmental behaviors towards them. Interactive environ ments, which depict marine concerns, remain passive and informative, i.e. not
being able to engage with the audience, failing to provide a long-term positive
effect. This thesis explores the usage of geodesic structures in depicting marine
concerns, exploring possible interactive environments among them in effort to
increase the awareness of marine concerns. Dissertation performs five geodesic
dome iterations and validations. In first, it studies the role of the open and
porous geodesic structure, resembled as four marine species (seabird, sea turtle,
dolphin and whale). In second, it enhances the first with the covers, studying
more immersive experiences. Third setup contributed to the scaling-down of the
geodesic dome marine species. Fourth setup showcased its deployment in wider
public spaces. Fifth setup streamlined further the structures, so they can be used
at diverse public spots. Two additional Augmented Reality modalites were used,
with the former with interaction with the sea turtle and the latter, interacting
with the whale.
marinhas (ave marinha, tartaruga marinha, golfinho e baleia).

histórica; as políticas educativas e curriculares regionais e nacionais; as diversas
da RAM como possível modelo concetual ao nível da EI.The understanding of the current characteristics of Early Childhood Education (ECE),
specifically in day-care centers (0-3 years old), in Portugal, must take into account: the
historical evolution; regional and national educational and curriculum policies; the
different curricular and pedagogical perspectives addressed by several national and
international researchers; the formation, conceptions and practices of educators in
context. In this framework, with the present investigation, through a case study of an
ethnographic nature, we intend to answer the following research question: how a
pedagogical practice in a day-care in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) is
characterized? Observing and listening to the voice of the educator under study, which
included the pedagogical routine, her life stories, her narratives of practice, her
perspectives, her fundamentals, her conceptions, paved the way for the creation of
reflective spaces. This reflexivity in, for and about the practice allied to training,
supervision and leadership indicate promoting the construction of new knowledge, the
transformation of practices, the change of paradigms. Sensitivity is noticed for carrying
out smooth, harmonious and cooperative educational transitions. There are efforts to
improve the learning and development opportunities that are offered to babies, children,
professionals and families, thinking and doing differently and in a different way,
grounded with processes of change and praxiological transformation towards Pedagogical
Innovation. This research is allowed unveil of the conceptions and practice of an educator
in a day-care in RAM, as well as confronting the regional legislation with the national
one about the day-care stage, being able to extract from this an important reflective
document in political, practical and academic terms, which could contribute to confront
the significant discrepancies about conceptions in day care, as well as giving visibility to
the example of RAM as a possible conceptual model to be followed at the level of ECE
