    Get PDF
Quando as cigarras choram (2006-2021) is a Japanese animated series spin off of a video game franchise and manga publications. The animation brings the story of Rika Furude, a priestess who tries for a hundred years to avoid her own murder, in the locality of Hinamizawa. To unravel the mystery, she needs her friends and the community, who welcome and accept her. The methodology used is literature review on topophrenia and social psychology from the point of view of Edith Stein. This text deals with the location where the events take place and how the creation of bonds and a support network are capable of transforming a story of tragedy into an ode to the community spirit of Hinamizawa.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The counter-memorialisation of the women perceived as witches in the Salem witch hunt of 1692 in New England began soon after the happenings were over, in non-fiction, namely in history tracts. However, it was only by the nineteenth century that the cultural memory of the woman-as-witch of Salem became more broadly memorialised, using American fiction as its medium. This dissertation addresses the question of the counter-memorialisation of the woman-as-witch of Salem as Romantic heroines in nineteenth-century Romantic historical fiction, particularly by lesser-known American women authors. Thereby I aim to bring to light their contribution to advancing and establishing the (trans)cultural memory of the woman-as-witch of Salem. A cultural descriptive analysis of the corpus of literary mnemonic (re)imaginations is used to outline the transcultural, and counter-memory characteristics of Salem’s woman-as-witch as (re)created by the authors studied. Our selected corpus includes the following Romantic historicals, listed chronologically: Delusion, or The Witch of New England by Eliza Buckminster Lee; Philip English’s Two Cups by M.B Condit; Salem: A Tale of the Seventeenth Century by D.R. Castleton; South Meadows by Ella Taylor Disosway; Martha Corey: A Tale of the Salem Witchcraft by Constance Goddard Du Bois; Dorothy the Puritan: The Story of a Strange Delusion by Agusta Camplbel Watson, and Ye Lyttle Salem Maide: A Story of Witchcraft by Pauline Bradford Mackie. By complementing the existing comparative and contrasting studies, which assess mainly the historical accuracy of the literary representations of the events and key figures of the Salem witch hunt of 1692, our study goes beyond its history or the fiction about its history. O corpus literário objecto do presente estudo inclui os seguintes romances históricos, listados cronologicamente: Delusion, or The Witch of New England by Eliza Buckminster Lee; Philip English’s Two Cups by M.B Condit; Salem: A Tale of the Seventeenth Century by D.R.

    Get PDF
Flood phenomena, intensified by regional and global climate change, are increasingly recurrent and devastating events. Extreme cases such as those in 2010 and 2013 on the island of Madeira corroborate this indicator. The regions most affected are those with the highest urban index and the most significant soil waterproofing, such as Machico. Therefore, based on the recent history of floods in the city of Machico and the aid of georeferencing tools such as ArcGIS, the geomorphological and hydrological analysis of the hydrographic basin of the Machico stream was carried out in order to verify the expected flow rate for a recurrence period of 100 years, through the Gumbel Probabilistic Distribution. Subsequently, the river mouth's flow capacity was analyzed using the Manning-Strickler equation, where the minimum roughness coefficient necessary to allow the flow of the expected high peak flow will be evaluated. Finally, the results suggest that the river’s mouth does not have the capacity to drain the precipitated flow, requiring changes in the bed roughness coefficient.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Biological Effects in Cancer Cells of Mono- and Bidentate Conjugation of Cisplatin on PAMAM Dendrimers: A Comparative Study

    Get PDF
Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II)) is a potent chemotherapeutic agent com monly used to treat cancer. However, its use also leads to serious side effects, such as nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, and cardiotoxicity, which limit the dose that can be safely administered to patients. To minimize these problems, dendrimers may be used as carriers for cisplatin through the coordination of their terminal functional groups to platinum. Here, cisplatin was conjugated to half-generation anionic PAMAM dendrimers in mono- and bidentate forms, and their biological effects were as sessed in vitro. After preparation and characterization of the metallodendrimers, their cytotoxicity was evaluated against several cancer cell lines (A2780, A2780cisR, MCF-7, and CACO-2 cells) and a non-cancer cell line (BJ cells). The results showed that all the metallodendrimers were cytotoxic and that the cytotoxicity level depended on the cell line and the type of coordination mode (mono- or bidentate). Although, in this study, a correlation between dendrimer generation (number of carried metallic fragments) and cytotoxicity could not be completely established, the monodentate coordina tion form of cisplatin resulted in lower IC50 values, thus revealing a more accessible cisplatin release from the dendritic scaffold. Moreover, most of the metallodendrimers were more potent than the cisplatin, especially for the A2780 and A2780cisR cell lines, which showed higher selectivity than for non-cancer cells (BJ cells). The monodentate G0.5COO(Pt(NH3 )2Cl)8 and G2.5COO(Pt(NH3 )2Cl)32 metallodendrimers, as well as the bidentate G2.5COO(Pt(NH3 )2 )16 metallodendrimer, were even more active towards the cisplatin-resistant cell line (A2780cisR cells) than the correspondent cisplatin sensitive one (A2780 cells). Finally, the effect of the metallodendrimers on the hemolysis of human erythrocytes was neglectable, and metallodendrimers’ interaction with calf thymus DNA seemed to be stronger than that of free cisplatin.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Modelling and Predicting Self-Compacting High Early Age Strength Mortars Properties: Comparison of Response Models from Full, Fractioned and Small Central Composite Designs

    Get PDF
The mixture design of cement-based materials can be complex due to the increasing num ber of constituent raw materials and multiple requirements in terms of engineering performance and economic and environmental efficiency. Designing experiments based on factorial plans has shown to be a powerful tool for predicting and optimising advanced cement-based materials, such as self-compacting high-early-strength cement-based mortars. Nevertheless, the number of factor interactions required for factor scheduling increases considerably with the number of factors. Con sequently, the probability that the interactions do not significantly affect the answer also increases. As such, fractioned factorial plans may be an exciting option. For the first time, the current work compares the regression models and the predicting capacity of full, fractionated (A and B fractions) and small factorial designs to describe self-compacting high-early-strength cement-based mortars’ properties, namely, the funnel time, flexure and compressive strength at 24 h for the function of the mixture parameters Vw/Vc, Sp/p, Vw/Vp, Vs/Vm and Vfs/Vs for the different factorial designs. We combine statistical methods and regression analysis. Response models were obtained from the full, fractionated, and small plans. The full and fractionated models seem appropriate for describing the properties of self-compacting high-early-strength cement-based mortars in the experimental region. Moreover, the predicting ability of the full and fractionated factorial designs is very similar; however, the small design predictions reveal some concerns. Our results confirm the potentiality of fractioned plans to reduce the number of experiments and consequently reduce the cost and time of experimentation when designing self-compacting high-early-strength cement-based mortars.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Preparation and use of slag from the incineration of municipal solid waste as a partial substitute for portland cement

    Get PDF
In the development of the study and interpretation of the new approaches on complementary cementitious materials, we have been developing, in a first step, a study of comparative analysis of the physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics of the ordinary cement CEM I 42.5 R produced by CIMPOR [1] . We will use matured and unripened slag resulting from the incineration of municipal solid waste processed by LIPOR [2] . In this laboratory study, the materials were first submitted to a differentiated grinding process in a ball mill, and subsequently used to the tests of particle size analysis by laser diffraction in the range of particles between 0.04 m to 2000 m. This was followed by fineness determination tests according to NP EN 196-6 and subsequently manufactured various types of hybrid mortars,(with a cement/slag ratio=4) and moulding of the respective specimens. Finally, they were all submitted to mechanical compressive strength tests at 7, 28 and 90 days, according to NP EN 196-1. Finally, the results were analyzed and discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
