Customer segmentation for private market investments: exploring investment behaviour to develop user profiles for Finexity
The rise of private market investments, fueled by blockchain-enabled tokenisation,
represents a new trend in the financial sector. Thereby, fintech platforms offering these
investments must effectively segment investors into distinct groups to retain them and finance
respective assets. To identify and analyse customer segments and pinpoint premium investors,
clustering methods k-means, hierarchical clustering, and DBSCAN were applied to four feature
sets: demographic, behavioural, combined demographic-behavioural, and UMAP-transformed
combined features. While behavioural features produced the most interpretable results, UMAP transformed combined features delivered the most accurate segmentation. These findings
provide actionable insights for implementing tailored marketing strategies for each customer
segment

Wine, why buy this one?
Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Driven Marketing, specialization in Digital Marketing and AnalyticsWe show the importance of understanding consumer behavior in a country having a rich cultural
heritage, such as Portugal, which is gaining traction in the global wine market. We analyze the
factors of price, brand recognition, label design, social influence, and environmental concerns,
as well as their interactions throughout the consumer journey. The responses of 188
interviewees suggest that pricing strategies and brand recognition are key drivers of purchase
decisions, while label design plays an important role in gaining consumers’ attention. Social
influence and sustainability were also found to be consequential, while environmental concerns
had a limited impact. This study provides insights into wine consumer behavior in Portugal,
offering valuable strategies for marketing professionals and wine brands
Microenvironment, the shelter of brain malignancies: bidirectional communication between glia and brain tumors
Estas descobertas vão elucidar e possibilitar novos estudos relativos a vulnerabilidades em tumores cerebrais, especialmente em GSCs, a células que estão na raiz da remissão de glioblastomas.ABSTRACT: Brain tumors are among the most aggressive neoplasms, including glioblastoma, the most common malignant primary brain tumor, which remains incurable with an extremely poor prognosis and treatment resistance. Glioblastoma recurrence often results from the presence of a stem-like subpopulation of malignant cells that share features with neural stem cells (NSCs), denominated cancer stem cells (CSCs), in the case of brain tumors, glioma stem cells (GSCs). Brain tumors, as well as GSCs are well known to hijack elements of their microenvironment to promote therapy resistance and growth. This reprogramming can be mediated by directly exploiting metabolites available in their environment or via cell-cell interactions with their neighbor cells. However, most studies in glioblastoma are focused on in vitro studies and lack a complete understanding of the in vivo signaling and metabolic interactions between brain tumor cells and their microenvironment. To this end, the simpler Drosophila melanogaster is a genetically powerful model to study in vivo molecular mechanisms in the tumor niche and its central nervous system has incredible similarities with vertebrates. Hence, in this study, we used a well-established NSC derived-tumor model since it recapitulates many mammalian tumor features. The work developed in this thesis aimed at understanding the role of the microenvironment in brain tumor growth and progression in Drosophila. In particular, to unravel the metabolic contribution of extracellular metabolites for tumor growth and to unveil how tumors exploit their non-malignant cellular microenvironment, in specific glial cells. In chapter I, we explored the metabolic dependencies of tumors from metabolites in their microenvironment. For this, we have analyzed the expression profile of upregulated plasma membrane metabolic transporters in Drosophila NSC-derived tumors and performed a screen to unravel the contribution of each transporter in brain tumor growth. Furthermore, we have highlighted heterodimeric amino acid transporters as important mediators in tumor growth and explored by which upstream mechanisms the subunits of this transporter system are upregulated in brain tumors. In chapter II we have focused on the contribution of the non-neoplastic cellular microenvironment for brain tumor progression, in particular glial cells. Glia are one of the Abstract xvi major regulators of brain physiology and homeostasis both in Drosophila and in vertebrates. However, we hypothesized that tumors induce the remodeling of pre existing glial cells to benefit tumor progression. In particular, in chapter II we aimed to explore how brain tumors reprogram their neighboring glial cells by assessing transcriptional changes in glia in a tumor context. For this, we have developed an assay to perform single cell RNA sequencing of glial cells in a tumor and wild-type contexts. Indeed, we have unraveled that some glial subtypes in Drosophila, in particular perineurial and cortex glia, suffer transcriptional changes in a tumor context. We have shown that the expression pattern of these glial cell types can reflect tumor-induced changes in glia metabolism, signaling and morphology. Here, we not only mapped these expression changes, but also performed an interactome-based analysis of differentially expressed genes to assess by which mechanisms glia might be exploited by brain tumors. Thus, this project advances the understanding of metabolic dependencies in brain tumors as well as the influence of the glia niche in tumor growth. Ultimately, we integrate glia as an important player in regulating and mediating the nutritional demand of tumors to promote their increased proliferation. These findings will shed light on new brain tumor vulnerabilities, especially in GSCs, the roots of glioblastoma progression and recurrence
As
Quais as expetativas e
resultante. This dissertation is concened with two areas in East Timor, with unique natural
characteristics which, if appropriately used for ecotourism, can improve the living standards of
their communities and contribute to the objective of sustainable development. The questions
addressed were focused on local communities: How are programmes for the development of
ecotourism involving their participation? What are their expectations and dispositions towards
participating? How are traditional regulations envisaged, namely the formal institution of Tara
Bandu, as a means for environmental protection and conservation, within a context of
developing community-based ecotourism?
Technical and legal documents were analysed concerning public policies and
government programmes concerning tourism and community-based ecotourism, and
interviews were carried out with leading civil servants in central and local administration,
dealing with policies and actions about tourism and the environment. In both terrains, selected
informants from the local communities were interviewed, along with non-participant
observation during several short stays.
We detected a broad consensus that community-based ecotourism should be a
contributing sector for East Timor economy’s diversification and sustainable growth, for
promoting environmental protection and conservation, and for creating jobs. Expectations are
high, as such initiatives are seen as an opportunity for improving living standards in the
communities, along with protecting the environment and local culture. There is, however, a
perception that, in order to achieve those goals, substantial infrastructure improvement will be
required and initiatives must be carried out in an integrated, participative and sustainable way.
Interviews have shown awareness that much remains to be done in those regards.
Traditional leaderships play a crucial role in implementing Tara Bandu in both
communities; however, perceptions of this institution vary somewhat between Ttutuala and
Adara. While in Adara there was full adhesion to it, in Tutuala some indifference was noted
regarding the ritual and legal formality, because of the perceived efficacy of local culture in
everyday environmental protection. Regardless, Tara Bandu’s potential for integration in future
community-based tourism activities was acknowledged, while facing a prospective increase in
tourism and of the resulting environmental and cultural pressure
Demographic, Clinical, and Epidemiological Characteristics of Patients Admitted to Intensive Care Units at Local Health Unit São José in the Pre-, During, and Post-COVID-19 Periods
ABSTRACT - Introduction: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic profoundly impacted healthcare systems worldwide. Intensive care units (ICUs) became overwhelmed due to the high demand for organ support techniques and prolonged hospitalization times. Structural changes with social and economic repercussions affected both the population's health and the functioning of ICUs.
Objective: To compare the sociodemographic, clinical, and epidemiological characteristics of patients over 18 years old in the ICUs of Local Health Unit (LHU) São José during the pre-, during, and post-COVID-19 periods.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study analyzing 17 719 hospitalizations, comparing sociodemographic, clinical, and epidemiological characteristics between the pre-COVID-19, COVID-19, and post-COVID-19 groups. We applied chi-square and Student's t-tests to analyze differences between groups. Additionally, a Poisson regression model was used to assess the risk of death across periods, adjusting for sex, age, and nationality.
Results: Admissions from Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PSAC) and Brazil increased significantly during and after the pandemic (p<0,001). ICU admissions from other National Health Service (NHS) hospitals rose significantly during the COVID-19 period (11,1% vs. 7,7%, p<0,001), a trend that persisted post-COVID-19. There was an increase in patient transfers to other hospitals during (5,0%) and post-COVID-19 (8,3%) compared to pre-COVID-19 (2,4%) (p<0,001). Post-discharge follow-up changed significantly, with a reduction in outpatient consultations (pre-COVID-19: 66,3% vs. during COVID-19: 57,3%; p<0.001) and an increase in direct discharges home.
Mortality rates increased from 18,9% (pre-COVID-19) to 21.9% (during COVID-10) and remained high post-COVID-19 (20,9%). ICU length of stay significantly increased during COVID-19 (6,3 vs. 5,8 days, p<0,01) but normalized post-pandemic. The Poisson regression model indicated a higher risk of death during COVID-19 (RR=1.16, 95% CI: 1.08–1.24; p<0.001) and post-COVID-19 (RR=1,11, 95% CI: 1,02–1,19; p=0,01). Older age, male sex, and foreign nationality were associated with higher mortality.
Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic led to significant changes in hospital admissions, patient demographics, patient origin, discharge destination, and mortality patterns. The findings highlight the long-term impacts of the pandemic on hospital outcomes, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring and resource allocation to address post-pandemic healthcare challenges.RESUMO - Introdução: A pandemia COVID-19 impactou profundamente os sistemas de saúde em todo o mundo.
The impact of vitamin B12 on the outcome of assisted reproductive techniques : a systematic review
Abstract
Introduction: Vitamin B12, an essential micronutrient involved in DNA synthesis, cell
division, and one-carbon metabolism, plays a pivotal role in reproductive health.
Despite its established functions, the impact of vitamin B12 status on assisted
reproductive techniques (ART), including in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic
sperm injection (ICSI) and frozen embryo transfer (FET), remains underexplored. This
systematic review aims to address this knowledge gap by evaluating the relationship
between vitamin B12 and the outcomes of ART procedures.
Objective: To evaluate the current evidence on the relationship between vitamin B12
status and success of ART outcomes with emphasis on clinical pregnancy,
biochemical pregnancy and live birth. Purposes to consolidate the existing
knowledge, identify gaps in the current literature, and pave the way for future
research directions.
Design: A comprehensive literature search was developed for publication studies on
vitamin B12 and ART on PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central
Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases. This search included studies that
measured vitamin B12 concentrations in serum, plasma, red blood cells (RBC) or
follicular fluid (with and without supplementation) in adult women undergoing ART.
Observational studies (e.g., cross-sectional, cohort), non-randomized controlled trials
(non-RCTs) and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. The outcomes
assessed included clinical pregnancy, biochemical pregnancy, live birth, embryo
quality, and implantation rates. The methodological quality of each study was
evaluated using the Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies of Exposure (ROBINS-E)
tool.
Results: Eight studies met the inclusion criteria and covered diverse geographical
regions and types of ART. While most observational studies showed no significant
associations between vitamin B12 concentrations and ART outcomes, two studies
reported positive effects of higher serum B12 concentrations. Notably, one study
demonstrated that supplementation with a vitamin B complex significantly improved
clinical pregnancy, live birth rates, and oocyte quality compared to supplementing
folic acid alone. Secondary outcomes, such as embryo quality and fertilization rates,
revealed varied results, with methodological heterogeneity limiting definitive
conclusions.
Conclusion: Adequate vitamin B12 concentrations may support favorable ART
outcomes, particularly in terms of clinical pregnancy, live birth, embryo quality,
implantation and fertilization rates, notably in cases of supplementation. Women with
no clinical symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency, but with a marginal vitamin B12 state
may benefit from supplementation. However, the lack of consistency across studies
highlights the complex nature of this vitamin’s role in reproductive health.
a fertilização in vitro (FIV), a injeção intracitoplasmática de espermatozoides (ICSI) e a
Scopus e Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL).
estudo foi avaliada utilizando a ferramenta Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies of
Exposure (ROBINS-E).
Noticing and bridging the gap: use and effect of corrective feedback in the foreign language classroom
irregulares do Past Simple.
professores, o recast e as prompts.
As explicações teóricas
This PhD thesis arises from the lack of an in-depth study about Corrective
Feedback (CF) in the Foreign Language (FL) classroom in Portugal. The research reported
in this thesis, which is part of the field of linguistics and language teaching, aimed at
investigating learners and teachers’ beliefs on oral CF, the several types of CF provided
by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and the effects of CF on the learners’
linguistic knowledge. The present research seeks to provide a significant contribution to
the existing body of knowledge regarding the role of CF in EFL teaching and learning,
thereby informing pedagogical practices in the EFL classroom.
The experimental study comprised three stages: (i) a questionnaire-based study
of learners and teachers’ perceptions on the provision of oral CF, including necessity and
frequency of error correction, timing of error correction, types of errors and their
correction, effectiveness of CF strategies, and delivering agent; (ii) an observation of the
CF strategies provided by teachers, and (iii) a classroom-based study on the effects of CF
strategies – explicit correction, recast and prompts – on the acquisition of regular and
irregular English past tense. The participants were 166 9th grade EFL learners studying in
a Portuguese state school and their five teachers, who were assigned to a treatment
condition that fit their style. During the instructional period, which had the duration of
four weeks, CF was provided to learners in response to their oral production errors
concerning the Past Simple. A control group was included. The study employed a quasiexperimental
design, with a pretest, instructional period, immediate posttest and
delayed posttest. Two tasks were used: a Picture Description Task (PDT) and a
Grammaticality Judgment Task (GJT).
Results from research stage 1 showed that both learners and teachers believe in
the importance of CF, but learners prefer immediate correction, while teachers favor
the provision of CF after the learner’s turn. Both groups believe that the errors that
interfere with communication, grammar and vocabulary errors are the ones that should
most often be corrected. The most effective CF types are, for learners, explicit
corrections and recasts, and, for teachers, recasts and prompts. Learners regard the
teacher as the main delivering agent of CF, followed by self-correction. Teachers favor
self-correction, provide CF themselves and resort to peer correction. Research stage 2 revealed that teachers correct most of their students’ mistakes. When considering the
total CF moves, recast was the most provided strategy, followed by prompts.
Results from the two tasks implemented in research stage 3 revealed that: the
prompt group made the most significant improvement across test periods in the PDT
and the GJT, particularly regarding the production of regular and irregular past tense
forms in the PDT, and the judgment of sentences containing irregular past tense forms
and ungrammatical items in the GJT. The explicit correction and the recast groups
improved their accuracy scores in the production of irregular verbs in the PDT from the
pretest to posttest 1, but the gains did not reach statistical significance. There was a

their belief questionnaire and teaching practice. The results suggest that explicit
corrections, prompts and recasts potentially have differential effects on improving
accuracy in the use of past tense forms. Theoretical explanations for the findings are
discussed alongside tentative pedagogical implications and potential avenues for future
