Elevating empathy: a training intervention design to develop perspective-taking and communication skills
In today’s crisis-affected world, soft skills like empathy are increasingly important for effective
leadership. While prior research shows that empathy can be trained, existing publications are
focused mostly on healthcare settings. This quasi-experimental study examines whether
empathy training can enhance emotional intelligence (EI) and crisis leadership abilities among
business school students through a 90-minute face-to-face training. Although no significant
impact on the respective constructs was found, participants demonstrated strong knowledge
retention and high satisfaction with the intervention. This work thus provides a practical,
replicable toolkit for integrating empathy training into business education and serves as a basis
for future research

The influence of the media on financial literacy
This thesis investigates how the media affect financial literacy. This is done by analysing the
change in behavior of retail investors after an outbreak of news. Evidence suggests that the
media helped improve financial knowledge in Portugal in 2022, as the households became
more responsive to returns on savings after the media published a series of informative
articles. Using a difference-in-differences approach, it appears that the media likely had a
causal impact on the improved investments. While this research would benefit from larger
samples, the findings indicate an interesting potential for the media to improve financial
literacy
We’re safer when we’re together
"Sociality – or group formation – offers different evolutionary advantages,
the most important one being protection. Animals in groups dilute their
chances of being captured, they have more time to dedicate to non-
defensive behaviors, and they can use cues and signals from group
members to detect potential threats more efficiently. As a result of these
advantages, many vertebrate and invertebrate prey species form social
groups, in which they continuously influence one-another. In an attempt to
uncover the behavioral and neural basis of group behavior, we studied
Drosophila melanogaster, an organism that is increasingly considered to
be a social animal. Drosophila displays social buffering of freezing, the
defensive behavior where animals become motionless in order to become
invisible to predators. Building on this finding, we discovered that social
buffering is even stronger under higher levels of threat.(...)
Regulatory events and price volatility in the EU ETS: an event study of EUA futures (2021–2024).[Navigating carbon markets: opportunities for corporations with net zero targets in an evolving regulatory landscape]
This Work Project examines how EUA futures prices under the EU ETS respond to major
policy and geopolitical events. Using an event study approach, it analyses six events between
2021 and 2024, measuring shifts in returns and volatility. Results show that surprise and
ambiguity drive stronger market reactions than policy ambition alone. Predictable events trigger
modest adjustments, while unexpected developments cause sharper repricing. These insights
help explain how carbon markets absorb information — and can support companies like EDP
in anticipating risk, interpreting market signals, and aligning their decarbonization strategies
with policy dynamics
The increase in the incidence of oncological diseases implies a growing need for radiotherapy treatments. Study of oxalate metabolism in a model obstructive sleep apnea
Abstract: Nephrolithiasis and obstructive sleep apnea are prevalent conditions with significant health impacts, and their association is primarily documented epidemiologically. The European Association of Urology recently identified OSA patients as high-risk stone formers. This study explored the hypothesis that chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), a clinical hallmark of OSA, disrupts oxalate metabolism, a key component of kidney stones, and that this disruption is regulated by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Additionally, the study investigated the profile of thiols in nephrolithiasis, focusing on cystine, another component of stones, which had not been previously addressed. Using an animal model of CIH, we investigated how CIH affects oxalate production and excretion, and the role of AhR in this context, using a pharmacological approach. The study also evaluated urinary thiol profiles in nephrolithiasis patients, considering variations related to age, sex - given the higher prevalence in men of both pathologies and comorbidities such as DM and arterial hypertension. Key findings indicated that CIH altered oxalate metabolism, potentially through tissue-specific mechanisms. In both the liver and kidney, CIH impacted enzymes involved in oxalate production, such as HAO1 and LDHA. In the kidney, CIH affected SLC transporters, which can influence the excretion of organic acids. Pharmacological interventions with an AhR antagonist revealed differential gene regulation of oxalate metabolism under CIH conditions compared to normoxia. Indirect modulation of AhR also showed similar trends for two targets in oxalate metabolism. A significant variability in urinary thiol profiles (Glutathione, Cysteinylglycine, a surrogate of N acetylated cysteine disulfides, Cysteine) among nephrolithiasis patients was observed, with differences linked to sex. This research provides novel, preliminary mechanistic insights into how CIH affects oxalate metabolism and mechanistic linkers in nephrolithiasis secondary to OSA. The findings underscore the importance of understanding CIH-induced metabolic disruptions and offer new perspectives for future innovation in kidney stone field.
