While the business project developed risk mitigation strategies to improve the supplier selection of the ABB group, this work project focuses on supplier monitoring. Specifically, supplier monitoring practices are analyzed to create transparency and promote mutually beneficial long term manufacturer-supplier relationships. For this purpose, the monitoring methodology of a subsidiary of ABB was analyzed to optimize the risk mitigation efforts of their supplier base. While supply chain researchers recommend a multi-criteria risk assessment, this work found that the manufacturer in this case only considered its dependence on its suppliers and their financial health and disregarded other factor

Exploring the link between iron availability and fluconazole activity against Candida glabrata

    No full text
"Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) represent a significant health concern worldwide, as recently acknowledged by the World Health Organization with the release of the first priority list of fungal pathogens. Fluconazole remains the most frequently prescribed antifungal for treating IFIs due to its affordability, oral bioavailability, broad spectrum of activity, and safety profile. This triazole drug targets lanosterol 14α-demethylase, Erg11, an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol, whose inhibition arrests cell growth by causing the accumulation of toxic sterols and depletion of ergosterol, which together compromise membrane integrity. Iron overload has been shown to promote fungal growth and is considered a significant risk factor for IFIs. Preliminary results from our laboratory suggest that iron-loading conditions reduce the antifungal activity of fluconazole against Candida glabrata, the second most prevalent cause of these infections.(...)"N/

Secondary economic impacts of Food Aid Programs : a systematic review

    No full text
ABSTRACT - Background: It is estimated that 47% of the global population cannot afford a healthy diet. The number of individuals facing food insecurity and hunger is rising, leading to an economic and food crisis. Food assistance programmes (FAPs) play a vital role in providing a safety net for individuals and families, significantly impacting their well-being. Therefore, the study aims to understand the overall impact of FAPs on secondary economic indicators. Methods: A systematic review was conducted to identify relevant literature. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane, and JSTOR databases were used. The search scope encompassed peer-reviewed journal articles published in English and Portuguese between 2013 and March 2023. Results: The search yielded 4,189 articles, of which 13 met the inclusion criteria and covered different forms of FAPs across the USA, UK, Rwanda, and East Africa. Most studies employed quasi-experimental designs, while two employed cluster randomized trials and three employed quantitative methodologies. Eleven studies were assessed to be of moderate quality. The various forms of FAPs included in the review were found to have complex effects on different outcomes, although FAPs was found to have a positive effect on increasing employment and total income for households. Conclusion: When effectively designed and implemented, FAPs have the potential to break the cycle of poverty. They address immediate food insecurity and promote economic stability for families.

Understanding how Streptococcus pneumoniae adapts to stresses imposed by innate immunity

    No full text
"Streptococcus pneumoniae is a commensal microorganism in the human nasopharynx that can become pathogenic when invading sterile body regions, leading to difficult-to-treat infections due to strain diversity and antibiotic resistance. The innate immune response to S. pneumoniae is primarily driven by phagocytes like macrophages, which generate antimicrobial reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). To survive, S. pneumoniae has evolved mechanisms to resist these stresses and relies heavily on glucose metabolism for survival at infection sites. While phosphotransferase systems (PTS) are linked to stress resistance in other Gram-positive bacteria, their role in the pneumococcus remains poorly understood.(...)

A targeted approach to control Streptococcus pneumoniae infection

    No full text
"The human upper respiratory tract (URT) hosts diverse bacterial communities, with the Streptococcus genus playing a key role in health and disease. Among these, S. pneumoniae can asymptomatically colonize the URT in biofilms, facilitating its persistence, transmission, and potential progression to diseases like pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis and severe secondary infections after influenza A (IAV). While antibiotics and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have successfully reduced the disease burden, challenges like antibiotic resistance and limited serotype coverage require alternative approaches. Targeting colonization, leveraging colonization resistance by commensals such as S. mitis and S. oralis, and using antimicrobial peptides like bacteriocins, offer promising strategies to inhibit pathogens and combat pneumococcal disease more effectively.(...)"N/
