Racing performance of the Quarter Horse: genetic parameters, trends and correlation for earnings, best time and time class
The aim of this study was to evaluate the sprint racing performance of Quarter Horses in
Brazil. Estimating genetic parameters, trends and correlations were obtained by single- and two-trait
analyses using Bayesian inference (earnings to 2 years of equestrian age, best time and time class
at distances of 301 m and 402 m). The data comprised a period of 38 equestrian years (1978 to
2015) with 23,482 sprint race records from 5861 animals. The heritability estimates were of low to
moderate magnitude, ranging from 0.10 to 0.37 (single-trait) and from 0.15 to 0.41 (two-traits), and the
repeatability was 0.31 to 0.46. The additive, residual and phenotypic correlations between earnings to
2 years of equestrian age and the other traits (best time and time class in distances 301 m and 402 m)
were high (−0.95, −0.96, 0.69 and 0.92), low (−0.29, −0.37, 0.26 and 0.27) and moderate (−0.41,
−0.47, 0.37 and 0.47), respectively. There is a positive genetic trend for all traits considered. However,
evaluation of the last 10 equestrian years (2006 to 2015) showed negative trends (genetic loss) and
trends close to zero (genetic stagnation). The design of breeding programs using the earnings trait in
conjunction with other racing performance traits can enhance changes in the genetic gains as a whole
in speed-racing Quarter Horses. These findings suggest that the traits studied should be included in
breeding selection programs for racing Quarter Horses.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The relationship between ambient temperature and match running performance of elite soccer players
The influence of environmental factors on key physical parameters of soccer players during
competitive match-play have been widely investigated in the literature, although little is
known on the effects of sub-zero ambient temperatures on the performance of adult elite
soccer players during competitive matches. The aim of this study was to assess how the
teams’ match running performance indicators are related to low ambient temperature during
competitive matches in the Russian Premier League. A total of 1142 matches played during
the 2016/2017 to 2020/2021 seasons were examined. Linear mixed models were used to
assess the relationships between changes in ambient temperature at the start of the match
and changes in selected team physical performance variables, including total, running (4.0
to 5.5 m/s), high-speed running (5.5 to 7.0 m/s) and sprint (> 7.0 m/s) distances covered.
The total, running and high-speed running distances showed no significant differences
across temperatures up to 10˚C, while these showed small to large decreases at 11 to 20˚C
and especially in the >20˚C ranges. On the contrary, sprint distance was significantly lower
at temperature of -5˚C or less compared to higher temperature ranges. At sub-zero temper atures, every 1˚C lower reduced team sprint distance by 19.2 m (about 1.6%). The present
findings show that a low ambient temperature is negatively related to physical match perfor mance behavior of elite soccer players, notably associated with a reduced total sprint

empresas, no subsetor indústria do vestuário.

Allergenicity risk of edible insects, a systematic review of human studies
MÉTODOS: Realizaram-se pesquisas no PubMed, Web of Science e Science Direct usando palavras-chave específicas relacionadas a insetos comestíveis e alergias.
where insects constitute an important source of nutrients. Edible insects farming is environmentally
friendly, requiring less food, water and land use, and emit lower greenhouse gases, compared to
traditional animal protein sources. Such circumstances prompted interest from Western countries
and in Europe, edible insects as an emerging food source can be framed in the category of novel
foods and novel food ingredients. Even so, there are some concerns about food safety issues, such
as food allergies due to direct sensitization and due to imunoglobulins E (Ig E) cross-reactivity
between insects, crustaceous and house dust mite (HDM) allergens, generally known as pan-
allergens. In the view of the possibility of insect farming and commercialization in Europe, the
European Food Safety Authority has requested scientific risk assessments on the use of insects as
food, with particular focus on allergenicity. This study aimed to perform a systematic review to update
information regarding allergenicity of insects. METHODS: To conduct this review, comprehensive
searches were performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Science Direct using specific keywords
related to edible insects and allergies. The inclusion criteria were focused on human studies
published between 2012 and 2022, two sets of keywords were utilized, and only articles written in
European languages were included. Data extraction was conducted independently by two
researchers, encompassing study characteristics and outcomes. A standardized form was also
constructed based on the Cochrane Collaboration’s tool for assessing risk of bias for human studies.
RESULTS: The consulted studies evinced clinical significance of mopane worm allergens in an
African rural community exposed form harvesting, with 50% of the participants sensitized and
exhibiting respiratory health symptoms. Additionally, a case report described a severe food
anaphylaxis in France caused by consuming a cooked mealworm larva in a subject who was allergic to HDM but not crustaceans; the specific proteins in the mealworm identified as allergens included
hexamerin, tropomyosin, α-amylase (structurally similar to house dust mite), and larva cuticle
proteins A1A and A2B. Cross-reactivity studies conducted to investigate allergenic similarities
between different insects, showed also cross-allergenicity between cricket and shrimp, with
tropomyosin identified as a major allergen. In another work, cross-reactivity between yellow
mealworm allergens, crustaceans, and house dust mite was also demonstrated, with tropomyosin
and arginine kinase identified as major cross-reactive allergens. A study on the effect of thermal
processing on allergenicity showed that some proteins were thermostable, and that the effect of
thermal treatment on the IgE cross-recognition of the allergens was protein-, species- and treatment-
specific. Despite it was achieved that thermal processing partially reduces cross-allergenicity, HDM,
shrimp and mealworm allergic patients were advised to be cautious about consuming insects.
CONCLUSION: These studies highlight the need for caution when consuming edible insects,
particularly for individuals with known allergies to related allergens. They provide valuable
information on allergenic potential, cross-reactivity, and the impact of processing methods, helping
to better understand and manage allergic risks associated with edible insects.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Acute: chronic workload ratio and training monotony variations over the season in professional soccer: a systematic review
Acute: chronic workload ratio (ACWR) and training monotony have been criticized as injury risk predictors. Therefore, the use of intensity measures should be oriented to understand the variations of intensity across the season. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the main evidence about the ACWR and training monotony variations over the season in professional soccer players. The search was made in PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and FECYT according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. From the 225 studies initially identified, 27 were fully reviewed, and their outcome measures were extracted and analyzed. Existing literature revealed a variety of designs, ACWR and training monotony ranges, variables assessed and durations of the studies. Overall, the range values for ACWR were 0.4–3.39 AU, while those focused on monotony were 0.49–5.7 AU. Regarding ACWR, the ratios located around 0.85–1.25 could predict lower risk values and ratios around ≥1.50 could predict higher risk values. On the contrary, with respect to training monotony, the ratios are approximately between 0.5 and 2.00 (low values in the preseason and low competition weeks and high values when soccer players are in highly scheduled competition weeks). Nevertheless, ACWR and training monotony methods should be addressed and considered based on their real value before using this indicator to reduce injury risk. In fact, the data did not conclusively define injured and non-injured players. For this reason, utilizing standardized approaches will allow for more precise conclusions about professional soccer players.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
