Risk assessment of reusing treated water from the Viseu Sul WWTP for irrigation and similar uses

    No full text
Due to the growing water scarcity, the reuse of treated wastewater arises as a possibility for sustainable water management. However, it is necessary to evaluate the possible risks associated with its activity. This study aims to develop a risk assessment of water for reuse, in terms of public health and water resources, for production and internal use by the Viseu Sul Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and external use in irrigation of green spaces in Viseu. The methodology used was a semi-quantitative risk assessment. The results demonstrated the viability of the production and use of Reused Water by the Viseu Sul WWTP, with an overall risk to public health of 0.68, and for use in irrigating green spaces in Viseu, with an overall risk of 0.75. The overall risk to water resources was 2.33 for nitrogen and phosphorus and 0.78 for E. coli. All risks were considered insignificant, considering the criteria defined by the method. Based on the information presented, it can be inferred that the use of treated wastewater to meet Viseu's water needs is a viable option.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Urinary bladder cancer - Old models, new opportunities

    No full text
Urinary bladder cancer remains as one of most frequent tumours. To elucidate the reasons for the development of tumours, to find out which factors determine the tumour progression and to develop new and better treatments with fewer side effects, intensive research, with the combination of in vitro and in vivo studies is mandatory. So, in this manuscript we performed a revision concerning the different methodologies to study this disease. In authors’ opinion, the best strategy to improve scientific knowledge for UBC should always rely in the association of in vivo and in vitro results. Currently, there are still many challenges in UBC diagnosis and therapy. These challenges must be faced as new opportunities. The molecular diagnostics and genomic revolution will be fundamental to develop new therapeutic modalities, and also to promote personalized therapies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    No full text
This proposal is part of the subjects of Visual Education and Technological Education of the 5th and 6th year of basic education, and proposes to investigate how the application of the problem-solving method, in a classroom context, contributes to the development student autonomy. Likewise, it is intended to analyze the training of students as builders of their own knowledge, the result of acquiring skills in terms of forming judgments (critical thinking), knowing how to ration and new ways of thinking. The problem arises from a personal reflection current on encouragement caused by experienced practices that revealed the perception of difficulties on the part of students in carrying out the activities proposed by the teacher, independently. In this way, it is intended that with the development of this consideration, students will intensify their level of autonomy, participation and construction of their own knowledge, stimulating not only the interest in art, as well as the use of numerous techniques and materials, through the application of the problem-solving method

    No full text
Understanding the self-perceptions of Special Education professionals establishes an added value for the framing, awareness and restructuring of pedagogical and institutional practices that promote an inclusive school. Presently, the awareness of change and the necessity to value practices is in daily team discussions. Obstacle and the feeling of incapacity, produced by the most diverse reasons, seems to make professionals feel tired and unmotivated. Even so, there are ways to work with the rare existing resources, trying to adjust them to particular cases. Much could be improved in order to reach the priorities, interests and motivations of each student. Therefore, this investigative study fits into the mixed research model, with two approaches, a qualitative one and a quantitative one, with data collected through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires aiming to clarify self-perceptions, by a sample of 34 Special Education professionals in the public network and it´s about the obstacles experienced when carrying out their functions. The conclusions explain some of the obstacles felt, at the legislative level, with regard to the development of some practices, as well as at the level of teacher training, with legislation not being considered an obstacle, but rather its operationalization, and the lack of human resources, which was the obstacle mentioned as the most noteworthy to putting into practice what the legislation normalizes and consequently being able to meet the needs of all students

Continuing Teacher Education: Informal Collaborative Teacher Network as a Response to the Emergency Context Created by COVID-19

    No full text
The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges to the education sector, necessitating a rapid transition to emergency distance learning and highlighting the need to train teachers to maintain educational continuity under lockdown restrictions. In response, initiatives such as “Online Pedagogical Sharing” emerged, comprising short-term training activities aimed at educators and teachers at all levels of education in Portugal. This case study, conducted within a qualitative paradigm, explores how training organised by this informal collaborative network contributed to the continuous professional development and adaptation of teaching practices during the pandemic. It utilised digital technologies to meet the demands of distance learning and improve the pedagogical use of new technologies. The sessions, which took place between June and July 2020, were widely accessible, facilitating a meaningful collaborative approach in the teaching environment. By analysing data collected during these sessions, the study highlights the network’s effectiveness in facilitating collaborative learning and the impact of educational technologies during a time of significant pedagogical change. This work not only documents the immediate response to the crisis but also suggests avenues for future use of similar practices in post-pandemic contexts, emphasising the need for further analysis of the resilience and effectiveness of these adapted pedagogical strategies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Influence of Different Agro-Food Waste on Ammonia and Greenhouse Gas Emissions during Composting

    No full text
Composting is one of the best organic waste management techniques, with zero waste; however, it generates environmental impacts. The objective of this study was to evaluate the emission of NH3, N2O, CO2, and CH4 from the composting of olive, elderberry, and grape agro-food waste. The experiment was carried out using reactors receiving straw as control and three treatments receiving mixtures of straw and olive, elderberry, or grape wastes. The gas emissions were measured for 150 days, and the composition of the mixtures and composts was determined. The results showed NH3 and CH4 emissions were reduced by 48% and 29% by the Olive and Elderberry treatments, while only NH3 loss was reduced by 24% by the Grape treatment. Nitrous oxide, CO2, and GWP emissions were reduced by 46%, 32%, and 34% by the Olive treatment, while these losses were not reduced by the Elderberry or Grape treatments. It can be concluded olive waste can effectively reduce NH3 and GWP, while elderberry and grape wastes are also effective in reducing NH3, but not GWP. Thus, the addition of agro-food waste appears to be a promising mitigation strategy to reduce gaseous losses from the composting process.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
