    Agostinho Neto and Biographical Historiography

    No full text
In this study, the practices of the biographical writing on Agostinho Neto are scrutinized. The analytical apparatus used shows that this historiography was hegemonised over a long period of time by celebratory and hagiographic narrative, not based on research and featuring both an internationalist school and an exclusively Portuguese-speaking nationalistic school, which are both made up of non-academic and literary academic intellectuals connected to political activism. It also reveals a recent and non-academic trend for writing critical historical biographies, more focused on sources but driven by a political agenda and not by the historiographic debate, which gives a teratographic bias. Other solutions are suggested in the final sections and it is argued that the recent evolution of the academic biographical historiography in Southern Africa shows that the parallel path of Hagiography with Diabolization is not inevitable

Saliva protein composition relates with inter-individual variations in bread sensory ratings

    No full text
Sensory perception of starch‐based products associates with salivary α‐amylase enzymatic activity. Besides this, other proteins relate to taste sensitivity and oral food processing. As such, the participation of different salivary constituents in starch‐rich food's sensory evaluation cannot be excluded. This study aims to identify salivary proteins altered by bread mastication and correlated with sensory ratings. In Experiment 1 the effect of bread mastication in α‐amylase enzymatic activity and SDS PAGE profiles between is assessed (N = 64). In Experiment 2, a sub‐sample of these individuals (N = 22) is subjected to sensory tests and the sensory ratings obtained are correlated with saliva protein composition. Salivary α‐amylase activity, in the supernatant of saliva collected after bread mastication, is negatively correlated with sweetness and saltiness ratings. Moreover, saltiness is positively correlated with the expression levels of carbonic anhydrase VI. Bread roughness presented a positive association with α‐amylase enzymatic activity and a negative association with S‐type cystatin expression levels. Despite further studies are needed to clarify the negative association between salivary amylase enzymatic activity and sweetness ratings, observed in this study, these results reinforce the role of α‐amylase and highlights that other salivary proteins can also influence starch‐based sensory perception

Changes in the salivary proteome of beagle dogs after weight loss

Being overweight or obese represents an important health issue in humans and pets. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the salivary proteome of overweight beagles after induced weight loss to better understand the physiological changes involved in this process. Five overweight/obese neutered males of pure breed beagles were evaluated. During the 3-mo period of weight loss, each animal received a strictly controlled amount of a low fat commercial diet per day. Body condition scores (BCS), body weight (BW), and serum biochemical parameters (total cholesterol, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein) were assessed weekly. Quantitative proteomics analysis by SWATH was used to evaluate the salivary proteome changes induced by weight loss treatment. BCS, BW, serum total cholesterol concentration, and abundances of 23 salivary proteins differed significantly between before and after treatment. Some of the altered protein amounts, namely of peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase, fructose-bisphosphate aldolase C, and 78-kDa glucose-regulated protein, increased after weight loss. These proteins are related with the immune system, inflammatory status, oxidative stress, and glucose metabolism. The results obtained suggest a potential use of salivary proteins in monitoring physiological changes in dogs subjected to weight loss. Moreover, the type of changes identified reinforces the postulated physiological improvements, which weight loss induces. Further research is needed to determine whether the changes observed in this study are due to weight loss, dietary changes, or a combination of both

Genetic variants in the IFNGR2 locus associated with severe chronic Q fever

    Get PDF
Q fever is a highly contagious zoonosis capable of causing large outbreaks of important health and economic consequences. Host genetic factors are believed to influence the development of severe chronic Q fever following the infection by the etiological agent, Coxiella burnetii. Targetted next generation sequencing (NGS) was performed in a case-control genetic association study on 53 confirmed Q fever cases, including 38 compatible with acute and 15 with chronic disease, and 29 samples from the general Portuguese population. Four SNPs in the IFNGR2 locus, rs78407108 G > A, rs17879956 C > T, rs7277167 C > T, and rs9974603 C > A, showed a statistically significant association to chronic Q fever, resisting the Bonferroni correction. These belonged to haplotypes significantly associated with chronic Q fever. The individual SNPs are referenced in the GTEx database as possible eQTLs. Given the direct bearing of IFNGR2 on IFN-γ signaling, the possible involvement of the associated variants with higher IFNGR2 expression could be in line with observations suggesting that IFN-γ production in chronic Q fever patients is significantly higher than in healthy controls. Further investigations are required to clarify the role of IFNGR2 signaling in association with chronic Q fever

    Get PDF
This paper examines the adoption of non-Ergodic Theory and Fractal Geometry to enhance organizational learning in healthcare food catering. It critiques conventional linear models, promoting an understanding of varied learning processes across organizational strata. Non-Ergodic Theory emphasizes the diversity of learning among individuals and groups, while Fractal Geometry examines learning as self-similar patterns at multiple scales. This work analyses how employee diversity, knowledge sharing, and cross-level collaboration contribute to a fractal learning environment that supports adaptability and innovation. Findings indicate that implementing these theoretical models can enhance service delivery and customer approval by promoting a culture of relentless education and creative ideas. For managers and practitioners, this study provides a blueprint for enhancing learning processes that can lead to greater efficiency and performance in healthcare food services, suggesting a strategic embrace of employee diversity and interconnected learning patterns for long-term organizational success

    Get PDF
One of the main concerns is the decrease in kidney function, which causes the animal to become unstable. Therefore, medical treatment should be instituted immediately, although this is rarely curative, and very often more advanced treatment, such as surgery, has to be chosen. In addition to a literature review on ureteral obstruction due to urolithiasis, this internship report presents two clinical cases, the aim of which was to demonstrate the effectiveness of surgical techniques such as ureterotomy and subcutaneous ureteral bypass in resolving ureteral obstruction, as well as their post-operative complications, in a total of eight cats that underwent one of these procedures at Anicura Atlântico Veterinary Hospital

AND SURGERY ABSTRACT: This report describes the curricular internship of the Integrated Master's Degree in Veterinary Medicine, carried out at the Muralha Veterinary Hospital in Évora, under the internal supervision of Professor Dr Hélder Cortes and the external supervision of Drª. Margarida Costa. It describes an analysis of the casuistry observed during the internship in the different clinical areas. She then discusses a monograph on polyuria/polydipsia (Pu/Pd) in dogs and cats from a diagnostic perspective, followed by a presentation of two clinical cases on the subject. Polyuria (Pu) is defined as the conscious production of a large quantity of urine, not correlated with specific signs of the urinary tract, and polydipsia (Pd) as an excessive increase in water consumption. There are numerous causes that can lead to this symptomatology, including renal, endocrine, infectious, electrolytic, hepatic, behavioral, neurological and tumor causes. Veterinarians can use relevant key elements in the diagnosis, such as measuring urinary density (DU), plasma ion concentrations and urinalysis, to prioritize the list of differentials and simplify the diagnosis

    Get PDF
The skin as a mirror of the internal health: Calcinosis Cutis in Hyperadrenocorticism This report was prepared as part of the completion of the Master's degree in Veterinary Medicine of the University of Évora and is divided into three sections. The first presents a statistical analysis of the cases followed during the internship, from October two of 2023 to March 31 of 2024.The second consists of a monograph about “The skin as a mirror of the internal health: Calcinosis Cutis in Hyperadrenocorticism”. Calcinosis cutis is a very rare pathology characterized by normal serum calcium levels but elevated deposits of insoluble calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. It is crucial to control the underlying condition, as the presence of calcinosis cutis is highly suggestive of adrenal gland dysfunction, that is, a diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism. The third section includes the presentation and discussion of a specific clinical case, in a dog, that exhibited this affection

    No full text
Este modelo utiliza as perceções do consumidor em relação ao desempenho da empresa, de forma a avaliar da qualidade do serviço prestado; - Cultural and Creative Tourism: The case of the Tourist Company Tours Évora Genuína Abstract: Segments related to cultural and creative tourism are increasingly recognized in the tourism sector as fundamental for the diversification of tourist offer and for consumer satisfaction. Cultural tourism involves experiences that emphasize the cultural and historical heritage of a destination, while creative tourism promotes experiences that explore local creativity, namely through artistic expressions, music, gastronomy, design, etc. In this context, tourist entertainment plays an important role in responding to the motivations of these niche markets, as it creates and implements new concepts of experiences that integrate tourists and visitors into the cultural and tourist context of destinations. This may include activities such as themed tours, local craft workshops, cultural festivals, among others, contributing to improving the image of a tourist destination. These experiences not only offer tourists a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in local culture, but also contribute to the economic development of communities, promoting cultural heritage and encouraging local communities' participation in the tourism industry. So, cultural and creative tourism and tourist entertainment play a crucial role in diversifying the tourist offer and creating meaningful experiences for tourists and visitors, helping to promote the destinations in an authentic and sustainable way. Therefore, this dissertation aims to characterize the sociodemographic profile of the customer of the company “Tours Évora Genuína”, to identify the motivations of customers, as well as, to get their feedback related to the respective lived experiences and also to assess the level of customer satisfaction. To achieve the goals, a quantitative approach was adopted using a questionnaire survey. The aim of this study is to ascertain the quality of the services provided to tourists and visitors, identifying the profile of the respective client, which reflects, to some extent, the type of tourist and visitor found in the Municipality of Évora. To this end, the SERVPERF model (Cronin and Taylor, 1992) was used, in which the evaluation of service quality is the direct result of perceived performance. This model uses consumer perceptions of the company's performance to assess the quality of the service provided
