    Get PDF

    Bridging meadows and sheaves

    No full text
We bridge sheaves of rings over a topological space with common meadows (algebraic structures where the inverse for multiplication is a total operation). More specifically, we show that, given a topological space X, the subclass of pre-meadows with a, coming from the lattice of open sets of X, and the class of presheaves over X are the same structure. Furthermore, we provide a construction that, given a sheaf of rings F on X, produces a common meadow as a disjoint union of elements of the form F(U) indexed over the open subsets of X. As a consequence, we see that the process of going from a presheaf to a sheaf (called sheafification) allows us to get a way to construct a common meadow from a given pre-meadow as above

A colaboração dos vários parceiros da comunidade foi decisiva para assegurar uma resposta educativa aos alunos, ajudou a prevenir o abandono escolar e contribuiu para que as desigualdades sociais não se acentuassem ainda mais; Education in times of pandemic: perspectives on the educational territory of Montemor-o-Novo - Abstract: The context of the Covid-19 pandemic and the measures implemented by the Portuguese government, such as the suspension of in-person teaching activities, posed new challenges to schools and the educational community. In the case study developed, based on a mixed methodology, we sought to understand how the Montemor-o-Novo School Cluster and its partners organized themselves to continue ensuring an educational response to students, in the pandemic situation. In this sense, we identified the measures adopted by the School Cluster and analysed their implications. We also verified the degree of involvement and support from educational partners during the suspension of im-person classes and analysed the impact that distance education had on the work of teachers and students. Finally, we present a proposal for a new educational model, based on the opportunities that arose during emergency remote teaching. To respond to the objectives set, the privileged data collection techniques included the analysis of the School Cluster's guiding documents within the scope of the distance learning regime and semi-structured interviews with members of the School Leadership Team, intermediate leaders, teachers, non-teaching staff, technicians, representatives of parents and partner entities, children in pre-school education and students in the first cycle of basic education. Questionnaire surveys were also applied to students in the second and third cycles of basic education and secondary education. We concluded that, during the period of emergency remote teaching, there was a good dynamic between the school, the family and the community. The collaboration of the various community partners was decisive in ensuring an educational response for students, helped to prevent school dropout and contributed to ensuring that social inequalities did not become even more accentuated

Memorable tourism experience in the context of astrotourism

    No full text
Astrotourism involves a variety of activities carried out during the night, requiring a deeper knowledge about the cognitive and emotional process that the tourist has and that leads to a memorable experience and loyalty. This study explores how (i) astrotourism stimuli are associated with cognitive states, designed by knowledge and involvement, (ii) cognitive states increase emotional states, represented by hedonism and refreshment, and (ii) emotional states generate responses, such as recommendation and loyalty. This study contributes to extending the S (stimulus) -O (organism) -R (response) framework by integrating cognitive appraisal theory and incorporating stimuli, cognitive and emotional states not used in the previous research. Recommendations for astrotourism destination managers are also discussed

Forensic taphonomy and skeletal integrity: insights from the 21 st century identified skeletal collection, Coimbra, Portugal

    No full text
Taphonomic processes pose significant challenges to forensic anthropology while also playing a key role in reconstructing post-mortem contexts and identifying biological and cultural modifications. This study assesses skeletal preservation in 100 individuals (50 males and 50 females), aged between 28 and 101 years at the time of death, from the 21st Century Identified Skeletal Collection (CEI/XXI), one of the most recent osteological collections assembled in Portugal and curated by the University of Coimbra. An adapted version of Garcia’s method (2005/2006) was used to calculate the Anatomical Preservation Index (API). In addition to quantitative data, qualitative taphonomic alterations – such as erosion, flaking, fissures, and colour changes – were recorded. The mean API score was 82.10%, indicating a preservation state between “Very good” and “Excellent”. No significant differences in preservation were found between sexes or age groups. All individuals exhibited at least one type of taphonomic alteration. Erosion and colour changes were the most frequent, with patterns varying according to sex and age. These findings contribute to the development of forensic taphonomy by reinforcing the value of integrated analysis and supporting curatorial and analytical practices in contemporary osteological collections

Os resultados indiciam a importância de abordagens breves baseadas na Terapia Cognitivo-Comportamental para promover ambientes de trabalho psicologicamente mais saudáveis; - Effect of a Cognitive-Behavioral Program on the Prevention and Reduction of Burnout in Nurses Abstract: Burnout represents a growing problem among nurses, associated with the high emotional and physical demands inherent to the profession. This study evaluated the effect of a cognitive-behavioral intervention program (six face-to-face sessions of three hours each) on the prevention and reduction of burnout, as well as on the reduction of risk factors and the promotion of protective factors among nurses working in a hospital obstetrics service (n = 4). The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory and the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire were administered at two pre-test assessments and one post-test assessment. Bayesian repeated-measures ANOVA indicated weak or inconclusive evidence regarding the effect of the intervention, however, Standardized Response Mean values and graphical analysis suggested improvements in the expected direction. Qualitative data indicated perceived improvements in emotional self-awareness, stress and burnout management, interpersonal communication, and subjective well-being. These findings highlight the importance of brief cognitive-behavioral approaches in promoting psychologically healthier work environments

A Case Study in Portuguese Organisations Abstract This dissertation thoroughly investigates the management of generational diversity in Portuguese organisations, in a context marked by population ageing and the coexistence of multiple generations in the labour market. A mixed methodology was used, combininginterviews with human resources directors and CEOs from six organisations with thea questionnaire administered to 319 professionals from different sectors and regions. The results show that, despite a growing appreciation of generational diversity as a driver of innovation and learning, challenges remain in terms of communication, the adaptation of human resources policies and the management of intergenerational expectations. Practices such as flexible working hours, intergenerational mentoring and personalized training, which promote cohesion and organisational development. It is concluded that strategic and inclusive management of generational diversity is crucial for the sustainability and competitiveness of Portuguese organisations in an increasingly diverse labour market

Are European banks informationally weak-form efficient? A dynamic analysis

    Get PDF
The efficient market hypothesis (EMH) is a cornerstone of financial theory and is crucial to understanding weak-form efficiency, particularly during extreme events. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) is a robust approach for assessing weak-form efficiency, overcoming some limitations of traditional methods. Given the fundamental role of the banking sector in the economy and its importance during crises, evaluating informational efficiency in this sector becomes even more relevant. In the present study, we applied the DFA with sliding windows to assess the weak-form efficiency in the stock returns of the European banking sector between February 2016 and February 2023 and the efficiency index of Kristoufek and Vosvrda (2013) to rank the weak-form efficiency levels of the analyzed banks. The results indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic increased bank return persistence. In contrast, the Russia–Ukraine war initially led to antipersistent behavior, but banks returned to persistent patterns over time. The efficiency ranking revealed that banks from Belgium, the UK, Spain, and Sweden were less inefficient, whereas those from France and Italy presented higher levels of inefficiency. The findings provide valuable insights for investors and policymakers regarding the development of risk mitigation strategies, risk management, and financial stability efforts
