    No full text
Os resultados deste estudo evidenciaram a presença deste parasita em 24,8% dos animais, sendo que, dentro do grupo de animais positivos, 23,7% voltou a infetar-se; - Prevalence and risk of reinfection by Giardia duodenalis in dogs and cats at Anicura Restelo Veterinary Hospital, Lisbon (2022-2025) ABSTRACT: Giardia duodenalis is an intestinal protozoan that infects several species, including dogs, cats, humans, rodents, among others. Transmission occurs mainly via the fecal-oral route, through the ingestion of cysts present in feces, water or food. No full text
This thesis aimed to investigate the effects of an eight-week psychomotor processing speed program on the physical and cognitive abilities of older adults using social centers, and to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of an individualized multimodal intervention program for nursing home residents. Additionally, an extensive literature review was conducted, focusing on physical and motor fitness tests for older adults living in nursing homes. Moreover, this thesis studied the psychometric properties of five assessment methods for proprioception, balance, and instrumental activities of daily living. The results revealed that an eight-week psychomotor processing speed intervention led to statistically significant improvements in several physical fitness parameters (such as strength, cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, and balance), as well as in most cognitive parameters (including reaction time, visual attention, executive functioning, and processing speed). Small to large effect sizes were observed. Concerning the individualized multimodal intervention program implemented in nursing homes, positive changes were noted in physical fitness (agility, strength, balance, dexterity, and gait speed) and cognition (memory and reaction time) from pre- to post-intervention. The exercises involving both physical and cognitive components were feasible and well received by participants. The systematic review described the most used assessment tests for each physical/motor component. Additionally, two empirical studies conducted within this thesis demonstrated that five assessment methods exhibited good to excellent test-retest reliability and acceptable measurement precision in older nursing home residents. Furthermore, we also showed the construct validity of the Portuguese Timed Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. This thesis demonstrated the potential of a psychomotor processing speed program and multimodal individualized interventions tailored for social center users and older nursing home residents, respectively. The systematic review provided valuable information to researchers and healthcare professionals engaged in nursing home residences, assisting them in selecting screening tools that closely align with their study/intervention objectives.

O caso do Museu Calouste Gulbenkian (Portugal) e do Hunt Museum (Irlanda)

    No full text
Analogue + Binary: the challenges of digital transformation. The case of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum (Portugal) and the Hunt Museum (Ireland) Abstract:Worldwide, technologies began to be introduced into museums in the 1960s, initially for collections management, but today they permeate all areas of the museum, whether physical or digital. In the post-digital society, museums are expanding their digital activities, although the face-to-face experience remains essential. The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated this process, highlighting the potential of digital technologies to support the mission of museums. This study examines how museums are adopting digital technologies in different sectors, based on the hypothesis that the informed and strategic use of technology can improve access to heritage and enhance the visitor experience. The empirical research analyses the cases of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Hunt Museum, using a qualitative methodology with bibliographical research, documentary analysis, semi-structured interviews and fieldwork between September 2023 and October 2024. The main aims are: (1) to examine how both museums integrate digital technologies into their strategies; (2) to identify priorities and motivations in the development of digital activities; (3) to understand the organisation of teams and resources in digital transformation; (4) to identify challenges faced and solutions adopted; and (5) to assess the digital maturity of the institutions based on the self-assessment of professionals. This research aims to fill a gap in the study of digital transformation processes in museums, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic. Given the scarcity of case studies that analyse the specificities of each institution, it is essential to broaden knowledge on the subject and promote a deeper understanding of the sector's practices and challenges

Excessive Energy in Dogs: The Impact of Caregiver-Related Variables and Fear/Anxiety

    Get PDF
Excessive energy (EE) and hyperactivity are frequent behavioral problems in dogs, with significant implications for canine welfare and caregiver well-being, yet they remain less studied than reactivity/aggression or separation-related problems. This study examined the influence of caregiver-related variables on EE in dogs, as well as the role of fear/anxiety. Data were collected through an online questionnaire from 730 caregivers, and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted. Younger dogs showed higher levels of EE. Among caregiver- related variables, stress, higher perceived caregiving costs, and more positive attitudes towards aversive training emerged as risk factors. In contrast, the ability to recognize chronic pain, knowledge of basic behaviors, and medication use were protective. The final regression model explained 21.3 % of the variance, with dog age, caregiver stress, and attitudes towards aversive training being the strongest predictors. When fear/anxiety was added, the explained variance rose to 29.5 %, underscoring its relevance as an emotional comorbidity. These findings highlight the central role of caregiver mental health, perceptions, and training practices in shaping EE, while also emphasizing the protective value of pain recognition, education, and medical support. Interventions should therefore integrate caregiver well-being, training strategies, pain assessment, and dogs’ emotional states, in line with a One Welfare perspective

A THIOL BASED TOOL TO EXPLORE PERITONEAL MEMBRANE PROTECTIVE DRUG CANDIDATES

    No full text
Introduction: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a renal replacement therapy that offers several advantages, including greater patient autonomy. However, peritoneal membrane fibrosis and loss of membrane integrity remain the main limiting factors for the long-term success of PD [1]. At SPF 2024, our group reported an association between peritoneal membrane fibrosis and aminothiol levels, namely cysteine, in PD effluent. Based on these findings, we hypothesized that pharmacological targeting endogenous thiols—the thiolome—may represent a strategy to preserve peritoneal membrane integrity. Our objective was to compare the thiolome of PD patients chronically treated with a specific drug class with known antioxidant effects with those whose therapeutic regimen did not include this drug class. Materials & Methods: Cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (HCys), cysteinylglycine (CysGly), glutathione (GSH), and urinary N-Acetyl cystine (NAC) were quantified in plasma and in PD effluent by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection [2]. PD effluent was obtained during the peritoneal equilibration test (PET), a 4-hour standardized clinical test in which a supraphysiological glucose-based solution is used as a stimulus to assess the peritoneal membrane’s transport characteristics collected at 0, 2, and 4 hours. PET is performed in the morning at the hospital. Thiols were also quantified in the bag obtained in the night before PET (overnight PD effluent). Ethical approvals: NMS 120/2023/CEFCM; ULSLO 2024-63. Statistical analyses included principal component analysis (PCA), between- group comparisons using Student’s t-test or Mann–Whitney U test as appropriate, and chi- square test for categorical variables. Results: A total of 41 PD patients were included; 59% were treated with drug class X. Patients from X-treated group were older (63±11 vs 51±13 years, p=0.0003), while the proportion of women was comparable between groups (21% vs 24%, p=ns), as it was the proportion of patients with more than 1 year on PD; 75% vs 53%, p=ns). Integrated PCA did not reveal a clear separation between groups treated vs. non-treated in each fluid, nor when all fluids were included. However, treatment with drug X was associated with significantly higher GSH levels in overnight PDE (p=0.010), 2-h and 4-h PET effluents (p=0.026 and p=0.006, respectively), while plasma GSH levels remained unchanged. The CysGly/GSH ratio was used as a proxy for γ-glutamyltransferase activity, a marker of chronic oxidative stress and fibrosis [3]; this ratio was decreased in patients with drug X across overnight PDE (p=0.024) and 2h-PET effluent (p=0.025), suggesting membrane protective activity. Conclusion: Since PD effluent reflects the peritoneal membrane microenvironment, the observed changes in GSH levels and the CysGly/GSH ratio in PD effluent, but not in plasma, appear to be informative indicators of membrane status, supporting a mechanistic involvement of thiol pathways in the pathophysiology of membrane fibrosis. These pilot results demonstrate the potential of our approach in drug repurposing studies aimed at peritoneal membrane protection

Local governance of sport: a national survey on how public opinion evaluates municipal sports development and priorities

    No full text
Public policies in sport and good governance adopted by local authorities aim to promote healthier habits and widespread participation in sport. However, little is known about the use of policy instruments by Portuguese municipalities to assess its implementation, evaluation and monitoring. At the same time, there is insufficient data available to evaluate political action and local sports development, making it difficult to assess this progress. Therefore, this research was designed to measure satisfaction with the current level of development in municipalities according to different sports development indicators. We followed an exploratory methodology using quantitative-descriptive and inferential analysis. Data was collected through a questionnaire between November 2024 and January 2025 with 937 responses obtained after validation. Results show a level of agreement between genders regarding satisfaction with the level of sports development, sports services and facilities, while transparency does not show encouraging results due to high level of non-formed opinion. There is also a high level of agreement on policy priorities and the influence of political orientation on public investment in sports. Municipalities play a key role in promoting local sports and modernizing cities and sport facilities, being essential to keep studying their action in different perspectives to measure good governance in sports development and political transparency perception
