Cyberbullying is an increasingly prevalent phenomenon among young people, with recognized impacts on mental health, including low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and, in more severe cases, risk of suicide. International estimates indicate that around one in three teenagers have already been a victim of this form of digital violence, highlighting the severity of the issue. Research also points to a higher incidence among adolescents aged 13 to 15, reinforcing the need for preventive strategies from earlier school years. At the same time, some studies have demonstrated the potential of interactive documentaries as relevant pedagogical tools by combining narrative, visuals, and active participation.
This study examined the potential of an interactive documentary in promoting awareness about cyberbullying, as well as identifying the most effective multimedia elements for student understanding and engagement. A mixed-methods approach was used, including the development of a prototype, the application of pre- and post-interaction questionnaires, and qualitative observation of the activity. The prototype, titled "Além dos likes", was developed specifically for this study and was based on real cyberbullying cases.
The research was carried out in two private educational institutions, one in Brazil and the other in Portugal. The data revealed progress in more ethical and protective behaviors, such as supporting peers and rejecting humiliating practices. Nevertheless, resistance emerged around certain sensitive topics, such as the sending of intimate images (among Brazilian participants), which reinforces the complexity of the issue and the need to strengthen educational approaches. Regarding the multimedia elements that supported comprehension, Portuguese participants highlighted images and illustrations, while Brazilian students valued narration. In terms of engagement, the storyline and music were identified as key elements by Brazilian participants, while Portuguese students emphasized the storyline and design. Interactivity was highly appreciated by both groups.
The study concludes that well-structured interactive narratives, combined with appealing visual resources, coherent narration, and the opportunity for decision-making within the story, can foster more conscious and empathetic attitudes in digital environments, especially when integrated into participatory educational practices
