Proposal of a framework for adaptive serious games using design science research methodology

    No full text
Games with purposes beyond entertainment, the so-called serious games, have been useful tools in professional training, especially in engaging participants. However, their evaluation and, also, their adaptable characteristics to different scenarios, audiences and contexts remain challenges. This paper examines the application of serious games in professional training, their results and adaptable ways to achieve certain goals. Using the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology, a framework was built to develop and evaluate serious games to improve user experience, learning outcomes, knowledge transfer to work situations, and the application of the skills practised in the game in real professional settings. At this stage, the investigation presents a framework regarding the triangulation of data collected from a systematic literature review, focus groups and interviews. Following the DSR methodology, the next steps of this investigation, listed at the end of the paper, are the demonstration of the framework in serious game development and the evaluation and validation of this artefact.N/

Biodiesel and social inclusion: an analysis of institutional pressures between biodiesel plants and family farmers in southern Brazil

    No full text
The objective of this study is to identify, through motivating, inhibiting and facilitating factors, responses to institutional pressures on the relationship between biodiesel plants and family farming cooperatives via the Social Fuel Seal (SFS) in the South region of Brazil. This region is characterized by well-endowed family farming cooperatives. This paper adopts as theoretical lens the institutional theory. It is based on case studies involving qualitative research drawing results from four biodiesel plants with SFS certification and eight family farming cooperatives. The results indicate that the institutional biodiesel framework influenced the SFS-based relationships. This coercion mechanism led the plants to comply with the promotion of family farming via cooperatives. The plants seek legal legitimacy and opt to accept institutional pressures, primarily due to the guaranteed sale of all biodiesel produced via government sponsored auctions. Cooperatives are attracted by the receipt of the social bonus, seen as a prime motivating factor, which can be interpreted as an informal coercive pressure. Considering the context in which the plants and cooperatives are inserted, the SFS promoted changes in the sale of raw materials. It was also found that cooperatives facilitating factors are inversely related with plants inhibiting factors.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Why do business angels invest? Uncovering angels’ goals

    No full text
Despite the increasing importance of business angels (BAs) as crucial players in the growth of high-potential early-stage startups, their motivations are not fully understood. Many of the perceptions of BAs deviate significantly from more conventional views of conventional economic and financial models. To gain a comprehensive understanding of BAs’ goals, qualitative techniques from marketing and consumer behaviour as additional lenses (including laddering and meansends chains) were employed to allow currently active BAs to articulate their goals in ways that forced-choice, quantitative methods do not achieve. Additionally, to determine if entrepreneurs perceive BAs in the same way BAs see themselves, entrepreneurs were asked to provide their perspectives on why BAs choose to become angel investors, based on their experiences with BAs. The findings reveal that traditional financial viewpoints do not adequately capture the depth and driving force behind BAs’ goals, while entrepreneurs appear to be overly influenced by conventional assumptions about these goals. The study also provides valuable insights into the relationships and hierarchy among BAs’ goals, and on the relevance of each goal. The paper ends with reflections on the practical implications of this research for BAs, entrepreneurs and policymakers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Continuous training as a promoter of the professional development of AT workers: the supervision and evolution of pedagogical practices

The demands of an ever-changing and globalized society dictate the need for competent teams with the ability to face challenges, in order to ensure institutions do achieve their goals. It is very important that the workplace continuous training courses offered by the institutions provide the employees with the necessary skills to perform their functions to the best of their ability and to the highest standards. However, there are no studies or research work on the formative process of the Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority (AT) employees. The purpose of this research work was to investigate the relevance of continuous workplace training courses to the professional development of the AT employees and how these courses affect their performance. We aimed at verifying, as accurately as possible, how the training of employees has evolved, what their perception about the training courses provided by the institution is, what role does the pedagogical supervision in training practices have, and what the perception of training decision-makers on supervision is. We would also like to grasp the contribution of such decisions to the professional performance of employees, as well as the type of supervision models present in the institution's training courses. As a methodology, a mixed approach was chosen, in the form of a case study, with exploratory and descriptive purpose. Survey by interview and by questionnaire was the data collection technique chosen. The data collected suggested that the training practices have undergone some changes, aimed at preparing employees for their current duties and for duties they might carry out in the future. We concluded that the supervision of training courses by the AT does not exist in a structured and well-defined form. However, there is some evidence of supervision at various levels and amongst several participants, essentially vertical and directive, although some collaborative supervision may be glimpsed as well.

    No full text
Não aprofundaremos em demasia os temas do insucesso e da indisciplina, mas sim o tipo de liderança intermédia usada, como contributo para o desenvolvimento desses alunos a nível pessoal e académico, bem como a influência exercida no conselho de turma (CT).Aware of the globalising and integrating educational reality in Portugal, it is important to consider the existing possibilities in schools as increasing strategies of promotion of educational success. The classes of Alternative Curriculum Routes (ACR) are a legislated and justified school reality as one of the educational offers of the elementary schooling for students that present a disruptive frame of mismatch between personal and school interest. In a Dante-like scenario of social change we can look at school leadership as something essential in an educational singularity. We consider this case study, in this school by the presence of ACR classes over the years and their intervention with the educational community. The type of leadership given by the head teacher and the strategies they employ were determinant to this class. With intermediate leadership being a significant factor in all of the academic changes and dynamics and without there being consensus on the ideal type of leadership, we try to analyse what is the leadership perspective used by the head teacher and how that was seen by students and teachers. In the current dissertation we are proposing to analyse if changes occurred in the performance and behaviour of these students and if there was a corelation with the type of intermediate leadership used in the class. We will not go to deep into the themes of indiscipline and unsuccessfulness. We will look at the type of intermediate leadership used as a contributing factor in the development of these students on a personal and academic level, as well as the influence the class council (CC) has

    No full text
There are progressively more demands of different natures, albeit indissociable, that reach the school, inevitably demanding a shared leadership. Integrated in the intermediate management structures, year coordination takes on this challenge and is an integral part of our study. In fact, it is our intention to analyse the relationship that exists between the leadership of the Year Coordinators of a secondary school in the Madeira region and the school's self-assessment in light of the Common Referencial for School Assessment. In order to respond to the research objectives, we embarked on a case study methodology, combining methods of a quantitative and qualitative nature, which helped to ensure scientific validity. Thus, the empirical part included the application of a survey to class directors, interviews with the Year Coordinators and the Coordinator of the Self-Assessment Team, as well as the documentary analysis of the self-assessment reports. The obtained results proved that the relationship that exists between leadership and school self-assessment is of positive confluence because both endeavour the improvement of the quality of the organization based on a specific diagnostic referencial. In fact, despite some respondents pointing out constraints to the performance of coordination functions, we found that the fact that Year Coordinators predominantly use the transformational style allows them to achieve results in line with the purposes of self-assessment and, on the other hand, the fact that they assume self-assessment as a lever that assesses quality encourages them to (re)think their field of action

Commitment-trust dynamics in the internationalization process: a case study of market entry in the brazilian market

    No full text
This chapter describes the market entry process of Portuguese small and mediumsized enterprise (SME) into the Brazilian. This chapter explores an under-researched strand in the studies of internationalization of SMEs, namely how trust and commitment leveraged the relationship orientation of the Portuguese SME in entering into the Brazilian market. Through a Case Study the chapter explores the concept of relationship orientation, trust and commitment to analyze how a Portuguese SME managed to turn around a difficult situation transforming its associates in business partners and prevented a process of desinternationalization.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
