Defining the regional inovation strategy for the year 2015: the case of the ITCE clusters in the North of Portugal

    No full text
Abstract: This paper describes the methodology and the definition of the regional innovation strategy, based on the Information Technology, Communications and Electronics (ITCE) clusters, for the North of Portugal under the project NORTINOV 2015, which was promoted by the commission for the coordination and regional development of the north of Portugal (CCDR-N) under the NORTINOV programme. Three strategic lines were proposed to achieve a regional innovation strategy for the ICTE cluster for the year 2015: the strategic line, in order to create conditions for the development of innovative clusters, the sustainability line, in order to facilitate the interaction with other clusters, and the structural line, in order to position the North region as a world-class region.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Challenges of business angels: does career matter?

    No full text
Purpose – The business angels market dramatically changed the modus operandi and nature of business angels’ activity, evolving from lone investors to angel groups managed professionally. This paper aims to analyze the impact of angel perceived career development on angel satisfaction and, consequently, on their intention to continue investing. Design/methodology/approach – A model was tested through covariance-based structural equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS based on data collected from 336 business angels from seven European countries. Findings – The results highlight that: the perception of personal development is a decisive factor in pursuing the career of business angel; personal development has a higher explanatory power in angel career development than fostering innovation; and the perception of career development has positive impacts on angels’ job satisfaction and reinvestment intention. The paper ends with implications and guidelines for angels, gatekeepers and entrepreneurs, which may increase satisfaction with the angel experience and contribute to enriching business angel work. Research limitations/implications – Cross-sectional self-reported data were used to analyze the results of this study. Originality/value – To paper extends the body of knowledge of business angels’ perceived career development, with implications for business angels, which may increase satisfaction with angel experience and, therefore, contribute to enhancing business angels’ activity. Thus, this study provides a consistent reference for forthcoming studies regarding the career of business angels and their relationship with entrepreneurs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Bringing the waters to Casablanca

    No full text
Demographic pressures, economic development, and climate change affect water availability in Morocco, which is rapidly approaching critical water scarcity. Casablanca, the largest urban center, relies almost exclusively on water sources from other regions. The two primary sources are the surface water stations of Bouregreg, fed by the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah dam near Rabat, and the water from the Al Massira dam south of Casablanca. However, due to the decreasing precipitation levels caused by climate change, these water stations will soon fail to provide the level of water required. Therefore, various public and private actors are implementing measures to ensure the continuity of water supply in alignment with Morocco’s National Water Plan. Among the proposed water production solutions are the development of seawater desalination plants and the construction of a canal to transfer water from another river to the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah Dam. Unfortunately, these supply-side solutions can only be sustainable if they are complemented by the active enforcement of downstream measures, including improved water reuse efficiency and intelligent water consumption management. This work was supported by FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology , I.P., in the framework of the Project UIDB/04004/2025 - Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for the People & the Planet

Lean implementation in product development processes: a framework proposal

    No full text
The implementation of lean principles in product development (PD) activities has been receiving increased attention lately. However, it is not clear how the application of these principles to PD activities enhances their effectiveness. Moreover, the implementation of lean principles is more difficult to achieve in PD activities than in the shop-floor context. The objective of this paper is to develop and implement a framework applying lean principles to the PD process. To that end, an action research project was conducted in the R&D department of an industrial company. This article presents and describes a six-step framework, its challenges, and main results. The implementation of the framework led to gains in the efficiency of the product development process through a 20% decrease in waste. Improvement measures such as standardisation, clear identification of roles, prioritisation of activities and improved efficiency of meetings were the main drivers for the gains in efficiency. Overall, three main contributions should be highlighted: the role a knowledgeable lean project leader can play; employee training focused on the implementation of lean-based product development activities; and team building and communication.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The importance of exploration and exploitation innovation in emerging economies

    No full text
Innovation capabilities are among the main driving sources of export performance; however, the literature on how exploration and exploitation innovation influence export performance in the context of emerging economies is scarce. As such, the purpose of this paper is to assess the relationship between innovation capabilities and export performance, mediated by exploration and exploitation innovation. For that, an online questionnaire was implemented surveying 250 Mozambican Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the agro-industry, agro-processing, and fishing sectors. Based on a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) relating innovation capabilities, exploitation, and exploration innovation to export performance, it is possible to state that innovation capabilities influence the export performance of SMEs in this emerging country. Moreover, exploration and exploitation innovation exert important mediation effects, the latter being more prevalent than the former. The results constitute a major contribution as it is possible to claim that, in the context of emerging economies, Mozambican SMEs have managed to enhance their export performance, based on innovation capabilities, but, also, to master their ambidexterity with exploiting capabilities, normally linked to their current technological trajectories, being more prevalent that exploitation capabilities, which are focused on the pursuit of radical innovation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
