Workshop on fourth generation ecosystem overviews (WKEO4; outputs from 2025 meeting)

    No full text
Ecosystem Overviews (EOs) are central products in the ICES approach to support Ecosystem Based Management, through providing the ecoregion context, identifying main pressures, associated human activities and impacts on ecosystem state. The Workshop on fourth generation ecosystem overviews (WKEO4) reviewed and updated priority topic lists for the EOs, discussed and advanced climate change impacts, and social and economic context sections in the EOs, and developed recommendations on how to improve the utility of EOs to meet advisory and decision-making needs. The workshop proposed the following five priority topics to be included/advanced in EOs: effects of climate change, foresight (with a focus on spatial analyses), cumulative effects, biodiversity and functional diversity, and trade-offs between ecological, social and economic sustainability. These priorities reflect a consensus to update EOs from static, descriptive summaries into dynamic, integrated, and operational tools that explicitly link ecosystem information and advice to options for management responses. Workshop discussions also highlighted the need for stronger connections between ecological and social information, improved visual and spatial presentation of results, and greater alignment with international and regional policy frameworks such as the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, OSPAR, and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Participants also discussed the need to more systematically adopt available workflow resources (e.g. Transparent Assessment Framework), interactive delivery platforms (e.g. ICES Xplorer suite), and novel methodologies applied within ICES (e.g. Spatial Cumulative Assessment of Impact Risk for Management). Doing so would help transition EOs towards a more modular structure, where sections can be updated more readily with self-contained methods, code, and analyses. With this, we aim to streamline EO updates and enable EOs to transition into an online application. Further work should include workshops on: i) societal/management objectives to support EOs, ii) developing guidance on social and economic data collection, use and documentation, iii) revised risk assessment methodology and a follow-up benchmark (Workshop on methods and guidelines to link human activities, pressures and state of the ecosystem in Ecosystem Overviews 2 (WKTRANSPARENT2)), and iv) Fifth Generation EOs (WKEO5)

Virtual atmosphere, emotions, attitudes and real use: when “Love is in the Air” in a virtual community

    No full text
This study involves several theories, namely: the theory of reasoned action, the technology acceptance model, the theory of planned behavior and the internet banking acceptance model. It aims to understand the relationships between the virtual atmosphere and emotional states, how the individual characteristics (social identity, altruism and telepresence) and emotional states influence attitudes, and how attitudes, past experience and trust influence actual use of a site. To this end, the authors developed three conceptual models explaining the relationships among the above-mentioned variables. Methodologically, descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis and the generalized maximum entropy estimator are used to test the three models in a wedding site. Of the eight hypotheses proposed, one can only partially validate hypotheses h1, h2, h3 and h6, while hypothesis h7 is accepted and the remaining are rejected.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The influence of supply chain on the innovation process: a systematic literature review

    No full text
Purpose – The importance of innovation as a generator of competitive advantage and the collaborative nature of this process are recurring themes in the literature. This paper aims to contribute to the improvement of knowledge about the relationship between supply chains and the innovation process by means of a systematic literature review. Methodology/approach – The method used consists of the identification, selection, analysis and synthesis of existing research on the subject and aims to ensure that the review is transparent, auditable and replicable. This paper presents the analysis of 94 papers from 37 journals and the major contributions are explored. Findings – The identification and analysis of relevant articles showed the complexity, timeliness and the wide-ranging character of the theme. The analysis of articles allowed the identification of facilitators of the innovation process, as well as five approaches applicable to supply chains to drive the innovation process. From these analyses, a model synthesising the main practices identified for improving innovation performance is presented. Research limitations/implications – When carrying out literature reviews, the selection of articles might be considered subjective. To circumvent this limitation, the papers have been assessed by three researchers. Practical implications – The results presented can be applied in the decision-making process by managers in the areas of innovation and supply chain. Originality/value – This paper synthesises knowledge involving the relationships between supply chains and the innovation process. The analysis is based on quantitative and qualitative criteria.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Determinants of consumer intention to use online gambling services: An empirical study of the Portuguese market

    No full text
Online gambling has skyrocketed in recent years. As such, knowing the determinants of consumer usage behavior is crucial in understanding online gambling services. This study has as main objective the construction of an explanatory model of the online gambling services usage behavior, based on the incorporation of perceived risk in the conceptual framework of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2). The empirical validation of the model was performed by conducting an online survey to a convenience sample of 212 Portuguese online players. Data were processed using the PLS-SEM methodology. The results evidence that performance expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivations, price value, habits, as well as perceived risk influence the intention to use online gambling services.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Much more than meets the eye: unveiling the challenges behind nascent entrepreneurship

    No full text
Nascent entrepreneurship plays an important role in the study of entrepreneurship. It has been studied from different angles, especially from the psychological and sociological perspective as nascent entrepreneurs have distinctive traits and competencies. Other important foci of research are the investigation of the environment in which nascent entrepreneurs operate, as well as the way both the identification and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities have emerged. The main objective of this chapter is to address (1) the main individual characteristics that entrepreneurs have in common; (2) the environmental factors contributing to new venture creation; and (3) the steps in the creation process. The chapter departs from the fundamental process of nascent entrepreneurship, which is centered on opportunity recognition, evaluation, and exploitation, and is complemented by the way how contextual factors and personal characteristics and competencies influence the new venture creation process.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Entrepreneurial tourism: the creation of business opportunities in the ADRIMAG region, Portugal

    No full text
The chapter presents an entrepreneurial perspective to rural tourism. It is based on the utilization of endogenous resources that exist within a rural region, and leads to a group of business opportunities related to tourism, craftwork, and agriculture, which are taken into account to define the strategic objectives for the ADRIMAG region. The chapter follows a qualitative approach to business opportunities. Through our analysis, it was possible to create, in a simple manner, a group of business opportunities based on the endogenous resources of the region. With this study, we expect to bring forth an entrepreneurial perspective that will sustainably foster tourism development within rural regions, but with high potential for tourism attraction.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The present study aimed to evaluate the factors influencing the behaviours associated with food waste in the household context, among young students. A quantitative methodology was employed, based on the administration of a structured questionnaire comprising three groups of questions: (i) conceptualisation of shopping and consumption habits; (ii) food waste practices; and (iii) sociodemographic characterisation. A total of 111 students from a school community in the Autonomous Region of the Azores participated in the study. The results revealed significant differences across age and education level. Younger students (<16 years) and those attending lower education levels showed a greater tendency to store leftovers, but also a higher agreement with less effective food planning practices, such as impulse buying, over-preparation of meals, and lack of stock control at home. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) identified consistent dimensions, such as Leftover Storage, Planning, Causes of Food Waste, and Food Consumption, all of which presented reasonable indicators of validity and internal consistency. Multiple linear regression confirmed that the perception of the causes of food waste was the main predictor of overall food waste. At the same time, leftover reuse and consumption patterns were shown to be determinants of food reuse, both in routine meals and in less frequent leftovers. It is concluded that food planning practices and the leftovers storage are central factors in minimising food waste in the household context. These findings highlight the need to invest in food literacy programmes and educational strategies that promote sustainable consumption, positioning the school as a key setting for awareness-raising and behavioural change

O que é o consumo hoje? Contextualização e evolução histórica. Material pedagógico do Tópico 1 - Consumo e Ambiente. Departamento de Ciências e Tecnologia. UAberta.
