Business process automation in SMEs
Business Process Automation has been gaining increasing im-portance in the management of companies and organizations since it reduces the time needed to carry out routine tasks, freeing employees for other more crea-tive and exciting things. The use of process automation seems to be a growing trend in the business's operational restructuring, combined with digital trans-formation. It can be applied in the most varied business areas. Organizations from any sector of activity can also adopt it. Given these benefits, the granted success in transforming business processes would be expected. However, 30 to 50% of automation initiatives with Robotic Process Automation technology fail. In this work, a set of guidelines will be proposed that will constitute, after validation, a framework capable of guiding organizations, with a focus on SMEs, in the procedure of automating their processes, thus obtaining the maxi-mum return of this transformation.N/
BCpbP: Blue Circular Post-Branding Project, a local Portuguese case study for a blue circular economy
Portugal has committed itself to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations in September 2015. Since its creation, Portugal has prioritised the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean. Promoting these goals is a key strategic priority for Portugal.
According to BCpbP data, around 2400 tons of fishing gear are destroyed or abandoned every year in Portugal, based on fishing activities in the fishing ports of the Cascais Captaincy. This case study in Portugal aimed to (1) create value from marine waste, (2) promote sustainable design alternatives to current consumption patterns, and (3) raise awareness and literacy about ocean sustainability, contributing to the Blue Economy.
An R&D methodology adapted to the concept of Living Labs was adopted, in which innovations such as services, products, or application improvements are created and validated in a collaborative metacontext environment.
As a result, a macro-process was established as a chain of custody for the circular economy called the Blue Big Bag.
From this, it can be said that BCpbP can be an example of a blue circular economy approach. Its main purpose is to combat excessive consumption of goods and reduce unnecessary waste, while at the same time sensitising our partners to environmental education. On the other hand, it also aims to contribute to the removal of tons of end-of-life materials and products from the ocean, namely fishing nets and gear (DFG) and other marine litter, [5] in order to create new and sustainable products.Blue circular economy, Social awareness, Service design, Sustainable desig
Divestment cycles in the Portuguese electrical and electronics industry: an historical, multilevel analysis (1975–2015)
This article deals with the topic of divestment. In the early 1990s, the Portuguese electrical and electronics industry (EEI) attracted high levels of foreign direct investment. This increase in capital flows played an important role in Portugal’s economic development. However, after a period of growth and expansion, divestments became more common
and the Portuguese government had to work hard to retain the existing investments. This study adopts a qualitative and historical approach to examine howeconomic and social changes impacted divestments in the EEI between 1975 and 2015, contributing to develop extant theories on divestment. The article helps to understandwhat happened to
the Portuguese manufacturing industry and to the EEI in particular, providing valuable lessons on international divestments and production relocations. This work was supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia - SFRH/BD/115337/2016.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Professional roles and competencies in distance higher education: perspectives from professors and tutors at Universidade Aberta, Portugal
The expansion of online distance education has intensified debates about professional roles and competencies required for effective online teaching. This study examines how professors and tutors at Universidade Aberta (UAb, Portugal’s Open University) perceive and prioritise their professional roles and competencies. We employed
sequential exploratory mixed-methods design: focus group analysis (n = 7) informed survey development assessing eight roles and 65 competencies via five-point Likert scales among 57 faculty (38 professors, 19 tutors). All roles were rated important (M > 4.0), with pedagogical (M = 4.68), social (M = 4.67), evaluator (M = 4.67), and adviser (M = 4.65) emerging as priorities. Professors rated pedagogical role significantly higher (M = 4.79 vs 4.47, p = 0.025), whilst tutors emphasised social (M = 4.89 vs 4.55, p = 0.034) and technologist roles (M = 4.63 vs 3.97, p = 0.004). Top competencies included assessing student work, demonstrating availability, adopting ethical posture, providing timely feedback, and being empathetic. Findings reveal convergence around core functions and meaningful differentiation between roles, suggesting complementary specialisation within dual-role systems. Implications address professional development programme design and institutional policies for recognising diverse competency requirements.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Sequential mixed-methods study examined role/competency perceptions among 57 distance education faculty at Portugal’s Open University.
• All eight professional roles rated important (M > 4.0), with pedagogical, social, evaluator, and adviser emerging as top priorities.
• Systematic differences revealed complementary specialisation: professors prioritise pedagogical design (M = 4.79), tutors prioritise social facilitation (M = 4.89, p = 0.034).
• Tutors rated technologist role significantly higher (M = 4.63 vs 3.97, p = 0.004), reflecting differential technology engagement.
• Findings inform differentiated professional development pathways and policies recognising diverse competency requirements. This research was funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), grant number DFA/BD/7328/2020, Martins and Morgado European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning DOI: 10.65043/eurodl.17714within the POCH – Programa Operacional Capital Humano, co-financed by the European Social Fund and national funds from MCTES
Alignment in collaborative new product development: comparing small and large firms
This paper aims at investigating how Alignment is performed by Small and Medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large firms and its impact on Collaborative New Product Development (CNPD). Also, this study considers the influence of innovation on inter-firm alignment. This study was performed through six in-depth interviews. Case studies were used to describe the reality of study. The results show that the greater intensity of alignment stems from the sharing of strategic information between firms involved in the initial phases of CNPD, influenced by the trust and commitment created in the supplier-client relationship when generating radical innovation. Also, results show that the larger intensity of alignment in CNPD is not influenced by firm size, despite being greater in the reality of large firms. This study complements the existing literature on alignment by investigating how firms align upstream according to their size. Likewise, this study contributes to reduce the knowledge gap about the influence of innovation generated in CNPD on the intensity of alignment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
An LMS with personalized content selection for professional training
A Learning management system (LMS) is considered appropriate for company training. It is increasingly used in companies or organizations as a tool to manage their online training. The company or organization should consider the implementation of an LMS that provides ease in training content selection to achieve the best use and satisfaction of its employees in the learning process. From this perspective, the present study aims to investigate the implementation of a personalized LMS to facilitate the formative content selection tailored to employees’ roles. A Survey research methodology was used to achieve this objective. Based on the literature and survey results, we propose an approach to reach the personalization of content selection.N/

Improving the conditioning of the method of fundamental solutions for the Helmholtz equation on domains in polar or elliptic coordinates
A new approach to overcome the ill-conditioning of the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS) combining Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and an adequate change of basis was introduced in [1] as MFS-SVD. The original formulation considered polar coordinates and harmonic polynomials as basis functions and is restricted
to the Laplace equation in 2D. In this work, we start by adapting the approach to the Helmholtz equation in 2D and later extending it to elliptic coordinates. As in the Laplace case, the approach in polar coordinates has very good numerical results both in terms of conditioning and accuracy for domains close to a disk but does not
perform so well for other domains, such as an eccentric ellipse. We therefore consider the MFS-SVD approach in elliptic coordinates with Mathieu functions as basis functions for the latter. We illustrate the feasibility of the approach by numerical examples in both cases.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Approximations between the cinematographic image and the poetic image :construction and montage: the case of Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão’s “Área Branca”
The purpose of this study is to compare the construction of the poetic images of Fiama Hasse
Pais Brandão in Área Branca (1978) with the construction of images in modern cinema
through montage. To do so, the Gilles Deleuze’s definition of time-image and the Sergei
Eisenstein’s theory of montage are examined and related in terms of the use of metaphors,
similes, caesuras and enjambements in the making of poetic images. This study seeks to
reinforce the relation between cinema and poetry and the way we perceive and conceive
images in different arts
Budget management is constituted by the management control of an institution, as it allows
effective and rational control, being considered essential to support and systematize public
authorization procedures.
The main intention of this work was to understand the impact of using budget management
owned by the Public Administration, namely how it is used and what impact it has on
public bodies.
Therefore, in order to obtain assertive information, an inquiry was carried out with the
Administration of the Regional Government of Madeira, thus opting for the study of a
case.
The results obtained with this study were promising because work associated with low
costs was carried out and developed internally, thus providing a great basis for achieving
the results.
It would be important to know in more detail the reality of the Portuguese Public
Administration with regard to the use of budgetary management tools, being able to
analyze based on the results obtained by the study, the truth remains that the
implementation of new ones can be useful, however they are not a reality that is easy to
achieve and proportionate
