Shems Friedlander Oral History
No full textShems Friedlander was a faculty member in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication from 1994 to 2014. He outlines his art education and early jobs, and discusses his career in graphic design for magazines in the United States as well as professional methods in the field. Friedlander relates how he came to work at AUC, teaching graphic design in the Department of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JRMC), and discusses how the program changed as technologies evolved, and his own introduction of computer-based design tools at AUC. His teaching of photography and art is also covered, as well as his role with the AUC Photographic Gallery, contributions to art on the New Cairo Campus, and the well-known photographers and other artists and cultural figures he had associated with over the years. He offers observations on the JRMC department and its place at the university, and on students at AUC. Friedlander also provides an account of his spiritual life, including his embrace of Sufism and Islam and associations with Sufi orders in the United States, Egypt, and Turkey
Hamdi Sakkut Oral History
No full textHamdi Sakkut (El-Sakkout) was a professor of Arabic literature at the American University in Cairo from 1965 until 2003. He recalls growing up in a Delta village farming household and describes his education there. He discusses his study at Al-Azhar University, Cairo University’s Dar al-Ulum, and Cambridge University, offering an account of being an Egyptian graduate student in England. His interaction with leading Cambridge scholars, later Egyptian AUC colleagues studying in the UK, and his future wife (and later AUC Arabic Studies professor) Elizabeth Sartain are also covered, as are their experiences as a mixed-nationality couple who lived for some time with Sakkut’s family in his home village. Sakkut describes AUC’s Department of Arabic Studies over the years, including its faculty (among them leading figures like Marsden Jones), the departures and introductions of colleagues, and the situation of being based within the same department as his wife. Students and academic specializations in the department are also mentioned. Sakkut tells of his involvement in efforts in the 1990s to equalize compensation and retirement between Egyptian and foreign faculty. He also relates his work with institutions outside AUC, as well as his research interests and works on topics like the Arabic novel
Amina Taher El-Lozy Oral History
No full textAmina Taher El-Lozy was a faculty member teaching English language and writing at the American University in Cairo from 1972 to 1992, and had attended AUC as an undergraduate (alumna of 1967) and in the Teaching English as a Foreign Language Master’s degree program (1972). She provides a view of her upbringing in Cairo's Maadi neighborhood within a well-to-do family, her education in British schools, and aspects of life during World War II (and later conflicts). Amina recalls her courtship and marriage to her cousin Ahmed El-Lozy, and his background and career in the family silk factory. She recounts how her family and their elite social circles perceived and were affected by the 1952 revolution and later the nationalization of private property, facing financial setbacks as her husband’s silk factory was sequestrated and he was the subject of government surveillance and placed on lists of enemies of the state. Amina El-Lozy recalls coming to attend AUC in 1962 as an undergraduate at the age of 32 while married and with children, telling about other older female classmates like her, studying English Literature with faculty like Doris Shoukri and John Rodenbeck, her participation in theater performances, and the leading literary figures who came as distinguished visiting professors. After graduation El-Lozy worked in the AUC President’s Office, and she tells of how the 1967 war and Egyptian government sequestration under Dr. Hussein Said affected the university. She speaks of how her work and friendship with President Thomas Bartlett (whose family she describes) contributed to her husband Ahmed El-Lozy becoming AUC’s Business Manager, and mentions Ahmed's accomplishments in that position. In the early 1970s she studied in the Teaching English as a Foreign Language Master’s program, and she describes her teaching career at AUC in its English Language Institute and later the Freshman Writing Program, offering commentary on colleagues and AUC students through the years. She mentions her son Mahmoud El-Lozy’s time as a student at AUC and his later joining the university as a theater professor. She also tells about changes in the Zamalek neighborhood, where she lived, over time
Daisy Fleita Oral History
No full textDaisy Fleita served as a faculty member teaching chemistry at the American University in Cairo from 1965 to 2017. She recalls growing up in Middle Egypt, and her university and graduate education at Cairo University. She tells of her mentor Professor Akila Said, and following her to AUC in 1965. Fleita describes AUC’s Science Department over the years including its separation into the Chemistry Department and other departments. She mentions colleagues, Chairmen (like Adli Bishay), Deans and Provosts, and upper administrators, as well as notable students/graduates of the program. Developments in the chemistry program and curriculum are covered, as well as facilities like the downtown campus Science Building (and facilities pre-dating it), and in the School of Sciences and Engineering Building on the New Cairo campus. She also compares students at AUC when she arrived with later generations, discussing issues like academic dishonesty and how it was facilitated by mobile phones
