No full textBob Williams was a faculty member in the American University in Cairo’s English Language Institute (ELI) and then Department of Applied Linguistics in the 2000s and 2010s. He relates his experience as a singer-songwriter-guitarist in the 1960s and 1970s in Berlin and elsewhere, prior to pursuing graduate work in linguistics in the 1980s and 1990s. He outlines his early teaching career and explains how he joined AUC in 2003. Williams describes the English Language Institute’s structure, facilities, and directors, and discusses its Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) graduate program. He also covers the move after 2013 of the ELI’s undergraduate programs and faculty to the new Academy of Liberal Arts, and his initiative for the TESOL program and graduate faculty of ELI to merge with elements of AUC’s Arabic Language Institute into a new Department of Applied Linguistics. Williams speaks about developments during his time at AUC like the move to the new campus and the 2012 student strike over tuition. He addresses issues like decreasing foreign faculty numbers, diminishing faculty benefits, the influence of university finances in academic decisions, and offers a critique of AUC’s academic administration. His own research is mentioned, including study of endangered languages spoken by African refugees in Cairo, as well as his role in the Nile TESOL organization. Williams also tells of living in Maadi and how the neighborhood changed in his time there, and recounts his musical pursuits in Cairo
