Hasaan Hassan Al-Khabir, a 64-year-old resident of the Qurna Hillside, describes his life experiences. He tells of living for thirty years in a hilly area referred to as the island, including aspects like spending time in the ancient pharaonic tombs under the homes to stay cool in the summer. Coming from a family who worked as builders, he speaks of his own work as a builder (including a job in Iraq from in the late 1980s until the Gulf War) and as a security guard, and his retirement several years ago. Hassan discusses the attempts by antiquities authorities in the past to prevent residents from building new homes in Qurna, including fines and police reports levied against him. He recounts how a governmental decision led the residents of his area, including his own family, to leave their houses and move to another area called Al-Soyool in 1998. He maintains that the residents left their houses of their own free will because living conditions had been difficult, with problems with water, electricity, sewage, and small homes with distant bathrooms. Al-Khabir notes problems with living conditions in Al-Soyool, including hot concrete houses and insufficient water and electricity.

Karima Mahmoud Ahmed Omran and her sister-in-law Nadia Ahmed Abd El Azim, former residents of the Qurna hillside, describe their life experiences. Karima, a member of the Abu Omran tribe, her family long lived in Qurna. She describes her father’s spacious house and its furnishings, where she lived with extended family; while it had electricity, water was brought by donkey cart. She tells of the purchase of food from a local market, the baking of bread at home in mud ovens, and her taking care of animals and livestock and making cheese for sale. While unmarried, her brother and two sisters have spouses. Karima says that her father made the call to prayer at the village mosque, and that locals frequently visited the shrine of Sheikh Abdo Qurna for blessings for marriage, sickness, etc. She fondly recalls interactions with tourists and other visitors from outside Qurna, but laments terrorist incidents that hurt tourism as her sister-in-law Nadia points to the 2011 revolution as diminishing tourism. The town where they have been relocated receives no tourist visitors, which has reduced income and caused many young men to move to Aswan or coastal resorts in Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada for employment. Karima recollects the sadness of the day they were displaced, including the demolition of their home in front of them. She relates the poor construction of the homes in the new village where they were relocated, calls life there less healthy, and paints a portrait of an unhappier life in the new settlement
