    Tom Farkas taught in and was an administrator in the American University in Cairo's English Language institute (ELI) from 1972 to 2010. From 1985 until his retirement he served as coordinator for the ELI's Intensive English Program, managing matters like personnel, assessment, and curriculum. He covers various aspects of the ELI’s activities, personnel, and structure, and its connection with the Writing Program, as well as English language teaching methods, testing, and assessment of instructors. Farkas also describes life for an American in Cairo from the 1970s onward, recalling notable occasions like the 1977 bread riots, the 2011-13 revolution, and the experience of meeting famous singer Umm Kulthum near the end of her life
